for real though even if you just listened to the most popular modern stuff there's been a massive trend of wanky fretless bass in anything remotely tech/prog these daysNordick posted:bassist spotted bass is the most underrated instrument in metal aside from, like, cello

It's generally annoying that the trend of loud drums, low tunings, and deep vocals combined to gently caress over the sonic space the bass exists in. Bands that actually understand giving their mix the proper room are too rare. I'd love to hear a modern metal band approach the genre with a Rush like balance of their instruments.

That's why Pig Destroyer had it right. Pretty easy to balance a mix with just drums vocal and guitar.

Not a modern band but I was inclined to mention them when discussing good production, actually! The production job on A Sense of Change is, imo, one of the best in 90s prog metal. Very rush-esque and crisp. The other album I'd put up there, and maybe you'd like it if you like SE, is Power of Omens' debut. The interplay is very, very complex and it's very hard to really get into what's going on at points - it took me at least 15 listens over a few months for it to really click - but at the very least the drumming is incarnate. Like the Confessor drummer with less kick use. But yeah the production on that album has a dark and icy isolated quality that adds a lot to the fatalistic atmosphere.

The bass is one thing I always liked about Lux Occulta (and Decapitated - same bassist and guitarist for a few years there IIRC) - it was always audible in the mix and sometimes did some really cool poo poo.

I misread this at first and thought you meant the album Lvx Occulta by this weird German band Martyrium https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ6WTzSRoYg it doesn't have very prominent bass but it does have a drummer who just kinda does whatever he feels like instead of playing along with the rest of the band.
