I kind of wish CAR-4 got the same nerf the Mosconi originally did when people just used that over every other gun, but I guess OVERKILL wanted the CAR-4 to be the most commonly used gun ever.

The M16 DMR is very good though and is my DMR of choice over taking the M14. It hits just as hard and has good enough accuracy with a deep Mag for a DMR, saves you massive amounts of time reloading. Every other DMR are trash though.

I don't see any inherent advantage most SMGs have over most assault rifles. They feel roughly the same, with the same outliers in each category (except SMGs not really having the equivalent of a DMR). In fact a good chunk of assault rifles will actually hit 80 accuracy without heavy investment in silencer skills while most SMGs sit in the "low accuracy but shits out lots of bullets" niche that Overkill added in Crimefest. Basically the whole "assault rifles totally suck now" is overblown in the same way that "shotguns totally suck now" is overblown. The CAR-4 no longer hits perfect accuracy, stability and damage and is instead a mediocre gun so people have declared it as trash. I mostly use the M-16 for assaults. Between it an the China Lake, I can murder everything pretty effortlessly. Kinda boring really.

M308, Falcon, CAR-4, and the Commando 553 are all fantastic guns right now with or without suppressors. There are a number of other good ones but those are the standouts in their respective classes IMO. I guess if I was running a sneaky bastard build my options would be limited more to the Clarion and a cut-down CAR-4, which are also very good.

Let me tell you about the time I carried pubs through Diamond Heist DW using nothing but a Judge and a Piglet that was solely used for stunning bulldozers and dunking on Captain Winters. A piece of the puzzle that isn't oft-mentioned is that the CAR-4 unlocks almost immediately at level 4 and is dirt cheap compared to later unlocks (and this was back when spending cash was more limited). Combined with it being the generically Good Assault Rifle, and then with it becoming the indisputable Best Assault Rifle due to poor balance decisions, you ended up with a situation where the player had no real reason to experiment with other weapons because the very first upgrade stayed not only relevant but superior to many other choices. And heck, once they rejiggered mod drops to lean towards guns you owned, you were technically rewarded for sticking with one workhorse rifle instead of diversifying. The AMR-16 was never bad, exactly, it just wasn't user friendly. The higher RoF and smaller ammo pool made it easier to run dry (and this was before fire select was a thing), and IIRC its only major advantage over the CAR-4 was said higher RoF and I believe slightly better damage? But you always had other options for bullet drills and the only thing you really needed them for were basic green Bulldozers besides. I don't think the damage took it past any meaningful breakpoints either. And of course, for me personally, it could only hit 16 accuracy, which was abominable.

It was harder to sustain ammo without aced Fully Loaded, and for what little Deathwish I played at the time, I didn't bother using it because running for ammo pickups in the open was an incredibly bad idea.

One of the values of bring a SMG as a Assault Rifle replacement is freeing up the primary slot thus giving you the flexibility in load out. Another is the low points investment to become great at quick reloading compared to Kilmer. Most enjoy deep ammo pools and generous mag sizes with an equally generous bullet pickup. They fire fast and have smaller or zero sight shaking recoil. Bullet spread for most SMGs is very controlled. There are multiple top Tier SMGs to choose from depending on what you like. I use to swear by the Command(SIG556) before the rebalance. It's still up there with it's lightning fast reload which is almost the fastest of everything available and is the fastest of the ARs. However there is a new reason to use ARs again, the China Lake. You can't take an SMG or Glock 18c with China Lake. If you insist on taking China Lake and require a general purpose bullet pusher, ARs become relevant again at medium range. Short range you take a shotgun or LMG or flamer. BUT RPG! You are unlikely to take on outside of DW other than for laughs as the GLs have far more utility. The other side of this is the MGL assuming you are willing to put up with its long reload. All that said, on Overkill, almost anything is valid, so shoot some cops already.
