imo episodes like this are "good" if they help people understand how horrible it is to be assaulted that way. some people i know irl have privately shared their stories with me about being attacked, and i can honestly say hearing some of that stuff made me feel the angriest i have ever been in my life

Yeah with all the Peggy hate it was starting to remind me of the circlejerk hate-off of an old King of the Hill thread, but I just don't know what sort of self-preserving twisted logic has to be in place for her to say what she said at the end. You can hear it in her voice the little internal battle that's going on as she says those words. But she says 'em anyway.

So, goons, whose side are we on in that Pro-Seal, Pro-Beachgoer conflict? 'cause I like the nice lawyer with his stun gun that I mean in court he proved wasn't a stun gun and that's an important technicality and the guy he "stunned" with his "stunning gun type weapon" almost certainly deserved it, over the heavyset voice of "Biker Bobbi" who sounded super reasonable until he turned out to be An Actual Crazy person.

I think American society has gotten to the point where we listen for any breech in the narrative we've constructed for ourselves and immediately go into MUST DESTROY DESSENT mode. if you think the person speaking is a racist, you'll be listening for something to confirm your point, not listening objectively to see if what they say has any basis in reality, and you can throw any connotative meaning of what they're saying right out the window as you'll be inserting your own. It's a nationwide problem where if you're not preaching narrative A, then you must be advocating narrative B.

Richard Fidler's Conversations podcast is great, it also pumps out an enormous amount of content so you'll never run out of stuff to listen to. Try this episode with author David Vann; this one with a Vietnamese prince turned bed and breakfast owner; these interviews (1, 2, 3) with Paul Carter, a storyteller who has lived an amazing life; and this episode about an attempt to fix a horse race that goes hilariously wrong (also, check out the Matthew Condon episodes linked here). My favorite podcast of all time is Love+Radio, it's like atmospheric storytelling (and if you like it there's a guy on SA that makes a similar one called The Lapse which is getting really good). 99 percent invisible is also good and by far their most popular. Actually they're all good, there's only like 13 and there's maybe one or two that don't grab me, IDK what you're into but check out a few, none of them are usually over 30 mins.

Theory of Everything is something I always catch, but it might be kinda lefty hipster whinecore or something for the average goon. I've been listening to Benjamin Walker float from program to program since podcasts became a thing, like 2003? So I'm not too objective about it, I just like it. http://toe.prx.org/ If you can find some of his old stuff, it's like neurotic stories and conversations about things that sound almost real. Nice, thanks everyone. TOE and Love+Radio are right up my alley, same with The Heart as someone who used to listen to a lot of Savage Love. I've had mixed feelings about the small amount of radio fiction I've listened to on TAL and Snap Judgment but will give The Truth a shot too.

The Truth is loving excellent. I can't recommend it enough, though some can be hit or miss. Can You Help Me Find My Mom? and You're Not Alone are incredibly moving. Start there if you're curious. The Talk and That's Democracy are also excellent. Those four are easily my favorites. If any of those don't stir up emotions, you're a robot.

Shocked nobody's mentioned The Memory Palace yet. It's a historical podcast that somehow captures those "holy poo poo" moments you get reading about history and packages it into moving little stories of individuals' experiences. Think the historical stories 99pi runs sometimes, only much more personal.

Ditto. That story was so heart rending for me. I half expected the change of heart was gonna be an interlude to a tragic end. 'Hey kids, let's go to Disneyland' because I'm dying. 'Let's take a turn over here' so I can tell you what cancer I have. 'Here's some annual passes' so you have something to remember me by. It's probably telling that every somewhat-middle class family story on the show I hear, I expect the punchline to be 'At 16 my mom died from a rare form of liver cancer. It came and went suddenly, but not so suddenly that she couldn't apologize for being a bad mom and then I comforted her by saying it was the best she did. Now whenever I see a shank of lamb I'm reminded of all the tubes and bits of metal strapped to her that she looked like a bdsm hedgehog.'

I found the whole ep pretty boring, to be honest. But I at least found some comfort knowing that they do SOMETIMES change the musical cues on the show. Because oh my god, I am so sick of the current ones.
