completely understandable i didn't really assume that e.g. the latest vbulletin would have all of the functionality we needed, but there's got to be a piece of forums software that allows for sane extensibility; in which case knowing what features you have the ability to rewrite and bolt on atomically might be feasible, and unless the features are completely intertwined, work on those can be done in parallel (i'm always looking for code poo poo to work on in my spare time, and i'm sure i'm not alone) edit: okay you answered my reply as i was writing it :-) thanks for the work you've been doing in any event, i'm sure it's slowly but surely getting better

zen death robot posted:And yes, I did an honest look at what it would take to move to a new vBulliten base and it was not going to work as-is or with any existing plugins. So you'd end up doing exactly what was done years ago - taking vBulliten and re-writing massive chunks of it. At that point, why even bother with the vBulletin part? I know it's going to end up being php and mysql forever most likely but what would be your ideal software stack be if you had unlimited resources?

The starting point for a VB upgrade would be systematically comparing SAVB to the release it was based on and then that to a later release but apparently people keep losing the floppy withe the SAVB source repo on it so
