I can think of 3 F2P games I didn't mind the models of.
Guild Wars 2 is pretty good about letting you play without being unfairly disadvantaged. I think real money only got you cosmetics and your typical XP boost packs. Buying the expansion got you access to the expansion, obviously, but also allowed you to expand your character slots, carry more bags and thus expand your inventory space and gave you a daily log-in reward that got progressively better. My wife bought the expansion, I didn't, and we played together all through the main base game no problems. I just had to be a bit more aggressive with breaking down poo poo, since I didn't have the extra inventory space.

The other two games I have not played in a couple of years, but I remember Tribes: Ascend was a tonne of fun even if you didn't pay for extra classes and perks. A skilled player was going to wreck your poo poo with or without spending money.

Warframe was good too. It may have changed now, but you could buy classes and equipment, but a lot of stuff dropped in missions, so you could still have a blast without spending money.

Planetside 2 was great, but the devs went weird a little while back and hosed the core gameplay up. But it used to be easily picked up and played with the default gear, spending money was just to give you options to specialise in.

There are some games on Steam that are legitimately free and instead just have optional $5/$10 DLC for the game's soundtrack and art book and other goodies if you feel like supporting them, which is classy as heck.

Just like your posting.
Yeah but the thing with that is you really don't need it anymore. With the last expansion you can just teleport from story mission to story mission without even doing all the crappy side mission and still have the game vomit experience and gear at you and while yes, you still have to pay to get/do certain things the game is now perfectly viable to play as a single player game and just experience the story pretty much any way you want.

Dragons age Inquistions has committed an unpardonable crime, even if it does allow you to color every piece of cloth your entire party wears into yellow plaid for some reason.

There are ten huge zones in game that you fight your way through doin bioware stuff and having a lot of fun. Through these zones are all kinds of quests, but usually one big over-arching one with a big bad and the big conflict of the zone. When you finish these zones you fight the local badass and are showered in cutscenes and decisions showing your awesomeness. You sit in your giant-rear end customizable throne and pass judgements over these bosses like, well, a loving boss. Then your trophies start popping.

Well god drat if I didn't get to the end of the 5th zone of the game and start fighting the boss. He was tough as hell but I was up to it. Then he fell down, and then levitated away over a hill where I chased him for a long time, through a dragon and all kinds of other poo poo.

A dozen hours later there is a death animation, a cutscene, judgements, trophies, overall enormous satisfaction of completing the long cap-stone quest for the entire zone: all of this was supposed to happen when that boss died. He did not fly away to the next zone as I believed, he flew away with my desire to ever play this game again. Oh and it's a known glitch since launch and has not been fixed yet or maybe never will but that information will never effect my life again lol.

A medium-ish sized desert one about lvl10 or so? Lots of sand and a big dramatically closed door you have to loop around the entire zone to open.
There's a big drat dragon south of this boss also.

The EDF series really needs to fix their progression mechanics because right now it really sucks. There's nothing more annoying than finishing a level after picking up all the weapon drops and learning you didn't get anything out of it because for some reason the game gave you duplicates of things you already have.

I got LOTF as the free game on Xbox One and its not very good where it counts. I like the environments and some of the music. But the camera is very bad and some fights take place inside corridors and hallways and its hard to keep track of the camera. They were going for "everything has weight" in regards to attack but instead it just makes everything slow and too bulky. Lots of little improvements to the interface and menu are needed as well. The experience and checkpoint system is unique at least.

Its just too loving slow for my tastes and shielded enemies are just a slog unless I'm really missing an element of gameplay to dealing with them.

The Steam page for The Age of Decadence, an otherwise really good throwback RPG, states that combat is designed to be balls out hard. When you start a new game, a message pops up stating that combat should be a last resort, and that trying to kill is the fastest way to die. The trainer in the tutorial tells you that you're not expected to win every fight, and that, when the swords come out, you've already lost.

Boy, but there are a lot of forced combats with no exits in this game.

I'm already triggered by Salt and Sanctuary, because all of the actions that you would do in Dark Souls, you can still do, except they're bound to different buttons and you can't change the controls.

There's a light attack and a strong attack, but they're bound to square and triangle rather than R1 and R2. R1 is for using items and R2 is for dodging (instead of circle, in DkS).

The first boss was a horrible clusterfuck because although the boss is basic enough, I drank all of my potions right away trying to attack him and then stood there like a dumbass because I was mashing circle to dodge instead of R2.

The game is so obviously a Dark Souls clone, they could have cloned the controls too since they copied everything else.

Castlevania, along with the Estus Flasks, souls, the bonfires, the inventory, lack of pausing, messages, blood stains, status effects that build up with a meter, and consumables that all existed in Dark Souls and function the exact same way, yes.

Aside from the fact that it's 2d instead of 3d it's pretty much exactly just Dark Souls. The entire mentality and design philosophy of the game is "Dark Souls, but in 2d."

Define 'good'. Dark Souls 1 (and I think 2) had a whip weapon, which was... usable, if not standout for any reason other than being a whip.

Whips are perfectly usable in Dark Souls 2. If you want to get fancy, the Puzzling Stone Sword is a pretty good sword that's ALSO a whip.

Today, I attempted the third big boss in Bravely Default, brain guy called Chaugmar. He has a super attack which he'll do the turn after dropping an otherwise nigh-impenetrable shield. This attack is sure to wipe out my party if it hits, so I figure hey, that's exactly what the Jump ability was made for - I give everyone the Valkyrie job set and when he drops the shield, I'll have him slowed, my party hasted so I'll go first, and he can explode underneath me harmlessly.

Turns out Jump will only have characters go up in the air at the end of a turn. Always. I have no idea why they made it that way. That's the one reason to use Jump in any Final Fantasy-like game, and now I cannot avoid an easy to see coming super attack. Whyyyyy.

(cursory googling tells me that there are better Jumps that you can instead break the game with [cool balance], but I don't have those yet, I just want to Jump over one boss' attack!)

The whip in DS2 at least is really good in PvP because nobody ever knows how to deal with it and just flops around sadly a few feet away from you while you whip them to death. Or at least that’s my experience. On the receiving end.

In fairness, I was distracted because the guy had a phantom helper and they were wearing matching BDSM-style outfits, his phantom kept trying to fist me with Caestus and their names were BIG DADDY and THE GIMP.

As mentioned, the Puzzling Stone Sword is one I am using just now and it’s really really good, nobody ever expects/predicts its Ivy-style whip moves.

Yeah Threaded Cane is pretty good. It has some of the best reach in the game and a huge horizontal swipe that can hit many enemies at once, which is critical in Bloodborne. The sword form is also really fast. It's a little weaker on hit and it's more reliant on stat scaling which makes it kind of a late bloomer but it's a fine choice and the weapon I used first to beat the game.

It's been awhile since I played it, but don't the characters come down at the end of the following turn? I'm pretty sure you can use Jump to go over his powerful attack, you just have to use Jump the round before. The monk's Pressure Point attack also ignores his shield, but I don't remember if it's feasible to have it at that point. Alternately, the turn he goes to use his ultimate attack, just have everyone unload all their BPs and hit him as hard as you can. If you're going to die anyways, you might as well try for it. He's weak to lightning.

That would require knowing when he drops the shield one turn beforehand. I guess I could experiment to see it it's always after the, say, fifth turn, but it'd be really tedious and if he follows previous super attacks (loving Rusalka) it's not going to be consistent.

Special attacks go through the shield anyway and I know his weaknesses (Examine is good), so it's not going to be completely insurmountable especially as I caved and googled to see if an attack called Energy Burst is magical or not and of loving course it isn't and contrary to Rusalka's absurd Dark Flow which is a water wave which is, again, physical damage, you apparently can at least Default against it. Just need to also have shields on everyone and heavy armor and hopefully that + Default is enough to mitigate literally 3000+ damage I eat right now (Hard Mode yo).
