But that wouldn't let them transfer millions of taxpayer dollars to big banks!

Also, big banks can afford good lawyers. Eminent domain works so much easier when you use it to grab property from people who can't afford to fight back.

Not only did the city get utterly screwed on the deal (third-party estimates are that Chicago got less than half of what the deal was actually worth), not only did they trade a long-term cash flow stream for a one-use liability payoff, not only did the management company immediately institute a massive rate hike, there were also plenty of downstream bits of fun. For example: city wards used to have block/street festivals. During this time, the streets were (obviously) blocked off. Now, if you want to do that? The parking management company has to be compensated for lost revenue. Want to put in a bus lane somewhere, that requires removing meters? You have to compensate the parking management company OR install more meters elsewhere!

There really should be more protections against idiots selling off public property like that. Seems like it would be pretty easy to gently caress up large swathes of government by getting elected on some kind of idiotic message that appeals to people that don't understand how society works (for example the Tea Party), then selling everything off and then just getting hired by the companies you worked with.

I've interacted with some of them clearing brush ahead of a fire before actually and it's not really a bad program.

First of all, they're not really fire fighters but brush clearers (clearing brush miles ahead of a fire to assist with fire breaks) and hot spot suppressors (sit on a spot spraying water / dirt on embers in areas that have been partially burned to make sure it does flare up) and are typically not anywhere close to a fire. It's all voluntary and is seriously the most coveted job available to prisoners since they make the most out of any other inmate in addition to getting quite a bit of time off of their sentence. Also, death or serious injury for them is super low (way lower than traditional fire fighter) since they don't actually fight fires, but just help a bit with cleanup and prep work so actual fire fighters can be more effective.

I mean that poo poo's way better than the stuff Angola has inmates doing i.e. literally making them pick cotton on plantations.

Convict Poker

It's the ultimate poker game, and even winning has a price. Four inmate cowboys sit at a table in the middle of the arena playing a friendly game of poker. Suddenly, a wild bull is released with the sole purpose of unseating the poker players. The last man remaining seated is the winner.

Chariot Race

A new event that debuted in 2014, Chariot Racing comically employs the principle of centrifugal force that challenges the contestant's sense of balance with a twist. It can be likened to being pulled by a boat while riding a wakeboard. Contestants, holding a pitcher of water, mount a sled that is pulled at top speed the length of the arena by a horse and rider. Gravity takes over in the turn, as the contestant tries to stay on the sling-shotted sled while not spilling the water. The man who holds on and spills the least amount of water is the winner.

I was curious to see if the political dysfunction described in that article had any demonstrable long term consequences. Quality of life indicators might be more relevant, but the Arizona historical GDP per capita numbers are interesting:

http://arizonaindicators.org/content/gross-domestic-product-capita

This chart shows Arizona's economy falling further behind the rest of the US over the period coinciding with the rise of the tea party in the state govt. While part of this may be due to the 2008 housing crash hitting Arizona especially hard, relative productivity also shows a similar (smaller) decline. Maybe gutting education and social services leads to a less productive economy, who new?

This was bound to happen. Ted Cruz would probably have the loony vote if it wasn't Trump. The 2016 GOP primary was pretty much already in huge danger of swinging way too far right.

Looking back at the 2012 election cycle, Romney never really got decisive totals over his 'Not-Romney's', and guess what? A lot of those people (the voices of reason in the GOP) skewed super old, and quite frankly a lot of them are dead. The Republicans were worried about losing to the Democrats from sheer numbers, they hadn't imagined an ideological shitstorm like the one that's about to happen. The people who are still in their party and not in the graveyard are basically white extremists, and they vote.

The real alarming thing is that a lot of republicans see this as a Trump/Cruz race, and that's horrifying on so many levels. It's like the only choices they're willing to even consider were 'bad' and 'worse'.
