I'll be starting a thread when this car is further along as it's moving pretty slow at the moment, but thought I'd show you guys my Time Attack S15 project. Not trying to win anything, just want something I can have some fun with and go fast. It will be running a VVT-i 2JZGTE with a Tremec T56 gearbox. Front and Rear tube frame, custom rear tubular suspension/diff cradle with double-wishbone setup and some other homemade parts. Planning to run some decent aero but will be built with a low budget (aka plywood and plastic). Will run in Pro Am class at WTAC in Sydney because we modified the firewall to move the engine back which automatically bumped us up a class. This was a rough design sketch I did up but will obviously change as we play with aero after the tube frames are complete. The little rectangle on the rear view above the diffuser is one of those cool FIA LED rain lights which I love. Don't need to run one, but want to. As I said I'm not trying to win (Pro Am means I'll be running against that all-carbon PMQ Evo M) so the aero design is extremely basic, and I know the rear wing supports are gaudy but I like it. None of the aero in the sketch is to scale: This is the modified cross member with engine mounts and you can see the new firewall: Closeup of the new firewall and transmission tunnel. We ended up moving it about 50mm back (within WTAC regs): New transmission tunnel from inside: Dummy gearbox mounted and transmission mount. You can see the big bell-housing adaptor too: Engine bay with motor fitted and cooling setup complete. The cooling setup I'm especially proud of. The 25-row oil cooler is inside the radiator shroud, and the intercooler/rad/oil-cooler and can all be removed together by removing two bolts. The fabricator designed and built this all himself, including the little filler can and shroud, and he cut off the top of the radiator and made a new end-tank from scratch. Nice straight 3" IC piping into a drive-by-wire throttle (from a Ford Falcon). Fabricator made up the throttle adaptor. Car will be running Haltech Elite 2500 ECU which has DBW capabilities which we want to test: No turbo yet, but will be running the new 64.5mm Borg Warner S300-SXE: Very close to the firewall as we aren't running any heater hoses: Main hoop of the roll cage (not finished, will have more braces) and a shot of how much car has been removed. This will have the tube-frame rear cradle and will then have some sheet metal welded in to seal off the cabin: Test fitting the front-bar, and we mounted the Mishimoto cooler upside down so now it has a 'W'. The front-bar will be modified to look more like the sketch above: We have probably 12-months of work before this thing will be running, mainly because my budget is tiny so from time to time the project will stop as I save up money which is why I didn't want to start a thread yet. It's a huge undertaking but ultimately it should be a extremely fast and fun car to drive. Happy to answer any questions, and happy for any ideas you guys might have (Jamal!).

Front suspension plans? Can't help but think that as long as you're hacking that much off the front, you could do better than struts...

Home-made lower control arms and toe arms and after market drop-knuckles, but ultimately the strut design will be close to standard. We toyed with the idea of a push-rod design but decided against it for simplicity and budget's sake. The decision to do the custom rear end was both a performance and budget decision. Because the fab work is completed in house and is next to nothing, it was cheaper to build the cradle than to replace the control arms/camber arms/traction rods/toe arms/subframe risers and so on with aftermarket parts. All I'm paying for is metal, rod ends and labour for this setup. I'm just fortunate to have some contacts who can help us with the suspension designs and measurements so that it works.

Ah well; as someone in the middle of designing a tube frame roadrace car I'm always curious to see other people's take on things, and I pretty much loathe struts for most uses. But very different sorts of cars. I look forwards to seeing more.

How much power are you planning on running? What are you doing for transmission cooling? Are you going to dry sump the 2JZ? What shocks are you going to run? Are you going to compensate for the downforce? Do you have any estimates for how much downforce you're going to make? What tires are you planning on running?

Nice. I'd have to say make sure you pay really careful attention to the front end aero and ducting for the coolers. I always see people/teams leave a ton on the table by not doing simple things like putting endplates on the splitter or controlling air into and out of the bumper, rad, and ic. Plan to do any cfd modeling? It seems like you can almost do it yourself these days. I have been meaning to try out openfoam with a basic model of a subaru to see how changes to a splitter and underbody generally work. I suppose there are issues with accuracy there but it has to be better than "eh, lets try putting a piece of plywood there and some speed holes here."

It is true that you can nowadays do a lot of things on home computers if you are not too ambitious and are willing to wait a bit. If you are willing to spend a bit of money, there's also the cloud option for the computational capacity (http://cfd.direct/cloud/aws/). OpenFOAM (http://www.openfoam.org/) is capable of producing just as accurate (or non-accurate) results as any other code. It is just a question of user expertise and available computational resources. However, please be aware that is very easy to produce misleading results. The user tends to be the largest source of uncertainty if CFD simulations. With OpenFOAM a bit more than some other (mostly commercial) codes because of the absolute freedom it allows. There are a lot of options and parameters to consider, many of them quite important and it will not prevent or necessarily warn if you've made poor choices. To balance off the above warnings, some motivational images generated on a home desktop computer:

I like the Fox Mustangs, but I've always liked the Fox Capri more, because of those headlights, and the straked taillights. Also, certain years of Capri had fender blisters. Freiburger realized ebay was a bad idea, he's now taking direct offers via email. "If you want to make a REAL offer on the Muscle Truck, email TheGuys@Roadkill.com. I'll consider trades, but would way rather have cash. Keep in mind this a personal transaction with me, and not with the company. The eBay auction is loaded with flakes. Not sure how I can sell stuff in a fair way at a reasonable price any more. And to all the people asking WHY I am selling it: just tired of it, have too many cars, tired of paying to store it, looking to move on. I've had the truck 8 years, which is longer than I keep nearly anything. Before Roadkill started I used to buy/build/sell all the time, and now I have to feel guilty about it."

Octopus Magic posted:How much power are you planning on running? Power will be around 400-450HP (E85) to begin for a number of reasons. The motor is untouched and not dry-sumped, but also my driving abilities aren't high so I will keep the power down until I improve. My previous car was a 400HP Evo 8 so the transition from AWD to RWD will take some time. The Haltech ECU has all of the features to help protect the motor if something like low fuel/oil/water pressure or high EGT occurs, and with the DBW Throttle the ECU can just close off the throttle in a warning event rather than do fuel/ignition cut. Wasn't planning on transmission cooling, does the T56 run warm? Transmission temp will be monitored though. Shocks will be from MCA Suspension who are a QLD based company and feature in some very high profile WTAC cars including the PMQ and Tilton Evos who have won their class the last three years running. They also have their own S13 in WTAC which has been top three for the last few years, and they're running a double wishbone rear end too. So when the car is complete I'll be giving it to them to weigh and build shocks to suit. They can look at the aero and adjust suspension accordingly. My company is a distributor for their off the shelf coilovers and I have a good relationship with them to go back and forth for advice. The Aero won't be huge to start as I can't afford it. My company is an online performance parts store and I've managed to buy a damaged APR wing cheap (This Model), but it will be relatively undersized for the car. I was making bigger end plates to get more out of it though. Until I can afford a bigger two-element wing everything else will stay minimal. So front-splitter/canards/diffuser/wing will be the beginning, possibly a flat undertray to run from front to back but I'm concerned about temps there. At this stage, 10.5" Rims on the rear with 295/35/R18 tyres. Front 9.5", so possibly 275 tyres. They'll be Advan A050 to comply with WTAC control tyre regs. jamal posted:Nice. Yeah the front end is something we're looking closely at. Our cooling setup is a similar design to PMQ with the swept-forward design (although their Rad/IC is side by side) which means the air can move through the cores and escape up and over the motor, rather than vertically positioned cores where the air moves through and hits the engine. Careful attention will be given to the bonnet to aid in this process. I think front-end aero can be improved a lot, most of the current cars just block every hole on the front bumper that isn't the centre cooler entry and just try and push all of the air around it. We think this could be done better, and that crazy Porsche 968 that showed up last year was the first car with a very different look to the front: They had teething problems last year but I think this year they could be the team to beat alongside PMQ and Suzuki, especially since Tilton won't be back with that Evo (I think they've retired it). CFD modelling I assumed was out of reach for our budget, but not ruling it out entirely and I have contacts at PWR who could assist in that department.

Fully ducted coolers increases efficiency by a huge amount, you can have your inlet and exit be like 25% of the core size when it's done right.
