Teflon Don posted:My CEO will be on Rachel Maddow tonight at 8pm CST. Do you mean CPT? By the way, that's how it's referred to by people. It's just one of those things, phrasing-wise. My black friends have joked about it w/ me and vice-versa. But that's an established relationship, not some public event.

Not that people shouldn't be offended, but I think pretty much every ethnicity has a "we are always 15 minutes late" joke about themselves. At least I've heard it from a very wide range of people.

My Imaginary GF posted:How the gently caress is calling folk "colored" supposed to be funny? That just sounds racist to me. The joke isn't that people are colored. It's a joke that only works if you know CPT means colored people time. DeBlasio says "I'm on CPT", makes you think he's saying something racist, then Clinton reveals he actually meant "cautious politician time," there's nothing in the joke that actually says anything bad about any race. If the joke was "Deval Patrick just endorsed me. About time. He must be on CPT." and then it just stopped there, that would be very racist and bad. As it is, it isn't racist in and of itself, but it does rely on you knowing a bit of racist history and is therefore not a good idea. But I don't think this changes anyone's mind about anybody here the way a worse joke might.

It's real bad form, but like you don't come up with that joke unless you live with or frequently have events with a Black family. I don't speak for my entire race, but I just can't get outraged at it. I cringed hard as hell, was embarrassed for that whole situation, but not really angry.

However, nothing about the joke actually says anything racist itself. There's nothing in the joke itself that suggests that black people are late all the time. So, I'm not going to say there's no racism involved, but I don't think it indicates racist attitudes on the part of anyone involved.

It's definitely not just a NY thing.

I only heard it second hand but wasn't the whole thing one really ill-advised awkward bit? Like including the responses? http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/04/on-de-blasio-and-clintons-cp-time-joke.html seems to think so. This makes it seem less overtly racist and more just really really tone deaf and stupid.

He obviously wasn't intending to insinuate black people are lazy or reinforce the CPT concept for a white audience, if you have the slightest ounce of political awareness it's perfectly clear what he's saying and where he's coming from. The baffling part is that de Blasio thought it would be a good idea to do a somewhat risque "who's on first" routine with Hillary Clinton while she runs for President.JamesKPolk posted:I only heard it second hand but wasn't the whole thing one really ill-advised awkward bit? Yeah. In SoFla it's "Cuban Time". Still dumb, politically. It's a 'microaggression' as opposed to a blatant "look at macaca over there" so while there may not be actual malice, he really should know better.

Jesus Christ why can't people just admit it was a racist joke. If it was a republican saying it I doubt you have this kind of hand wringing. The joke is that you're subverting the (presumed) typical expectation that black people are lazy and don't show up to things on time.

Defrauding a veteran of their veteran benefits can result in up to five years imprisonment, in addition to any other charges.

He should have known better, it was bad form, tone-deaf, all of those things. But you're gonna have a hard time sticking de Blasio with even a "racist-ish" tag when he's been married for more than 20 years to his high school sweetheart, a black woman. I'm not saying the skit wasn't problematic, but like it or not the guy has got the black cred to wave it off. And since the punchline was a bait-and-switch pun, I don't even know how much there is to wave off. To me, the bigger issue is that nobody who knew about the skit managed to sit him down and say "we got enough problems, let's not do this".
