Of course it does, I've made that same point about dogwhistle terms like "entitlements" here many times, but if you're looking for a language that can't be twisted by irony it's not going to be one spoken by human beings. Don't let your understanding of the importance of language trick you into thinking there's some incorruptible turn of phrase we could win hearts and minds with if only we just figured out what it was.

Even if we erased the word "entitlement" from everyone's minds overnight, the people who oppose these kinds of things would turn "deferred compensation" into a dirty word just by saying it with a sneer, same as they did to "socialism."

It seems that the true difficulty of capturing the narrative passed over your head. Also conservatives have the distinct advantage of not actually having to have their narrative line up with reality (since their goals are just as disconnected).

The hyperpluralist nature of the left makes it worse too. How many climate activists are canvassing black churchs across the south? Because you bet loud-mouthed climate deniers are grabbing control of the narrative in the megachurches. And so on.

I think we agree here. I'm not talking about erasing words or dogwhistles, but more critically evaluating and challenging how they are used.

Whenever I hear the word "entitlements" used by news media, I now automatically find myself correcting the term to "earned benefits" in my head. I want more people to do the same.

I realize how hard it is to capture the narrative. Unfortunately it isn't just conservatives having a narrative advantage. If the narrative is against them, they seize it or spin it to be advantagous. It also helps they have a robust old media presence. Luckily the conservative old media is going off the rails/collapsing and the left has flourished on the new media and seems to be getting better at seizing language and narrative. Unfortunately the rest of the not conservative old media seems to be trying to gobble up the pieces breaking off of the conservative old media.

I agree the hyperpluralist nature of the left does make it worse.

But the left does the exact same thing in trying to seize or spin things. There's no punting, just failure. It's not for lack of trying and I doubt it's "everyone in charge is dumb."

You're right the media is a big part of the problem, as is the increasing echo chambered American political discourse. It makes it so that bad sound mixing ruins Dean's campaign, but getting caught hiding a loan from Goldman doesn't matter.

TNG reflects the TV production levels of its time and, as one consequence, looks and sounds like crap these days. To say nothing of the bad writing and cringe-inducing dialogue, particularly in the early seasons. :colbert:
