Who gives a poo poo? Are you their mommy, or their boss? If they're getting their work done and functioning, keep your big fat nose out of it.

The amount of productivity you get from a happy and mentally balanced worker who is able to take a breather when needed is SO MUCH MORE valuable than the 'lost productivity' of the breaktime, it's insane. And, the amount of breaks someone needs during a work day is going to be different from person-to-person, not something that can be systemtatically allotted in an effective way. And yeah, some people may go to far with it, in which case, if it IS a problem, let their boss handle it. And if you're their boss, seriously evaluate if it's having an effect on the team, or if you're just exercising petty control.
I was incredibly happy when work banned smoking because its not uncommon for me to spend my 12hr shift with only a 20m break for lunch, and every time someone takes a break they need someone to cover their work while they're gone. And you're right, giving them a break is better than dealing with an angry, twitchy, distracted smoker, so we'd let them go and have to cover their poo poo while they were gone. It sucked, and made my life a lot harder, and then they'd get insulted when we were grumpy about it because "we said they could go!" Well yeah, because you were such a pain to deal with that it was worth it.

Nice crab mentality there. Why not push for more breaks for everyone, then no one gets special treatment and you all get more breaks.

Working a 12 hour shift with only one 20 minute break is some Victorian era bullshit.

^^^ Yeah aren't there federal mandates for that kind of thing? Assuming you're in the USA.

Actually smoker vs non-smoker is a big deal some places. My office is in a business center with a common area and a walkway around an artificial lake. People take breaks and walk around the water when the weather's nice. Recently the property manager started to crack down on people smoking by the entrances and put up a bunch of No Smoking signs, then put up Smoking Permitted signs around the lake path to try and push all the smokers away from the building. Of course this pissed off the people who liked to walk that way to get away from them and for ruining their fresh air, so after the first weekend I saw several of the new 'hey guys smoke over here' signs at the bottom of the lake :xd:

fwiw i might have deleted a bunch of distribution rights updates some years ago. we were working on migrating from one system to another, and this one big 4 label had a system where they'd send rights updates for every song. literally thousands of rights updates every goddamned day. one time i wanted to copy some stuff to a new folder side by side but i accidentally overwrote what was in the acual folder. so thats why european music is no longer a thing, if youre wondering.

From the article they sourced

quote:

The source accused the mining giant of using the incident to further cut staff numbers after 170 recent redundancies at the iron ore mine.

Last year, up to 15 mine workers at Agnew Gold Mine in the Goldfields were sacked for safety breaches when eight men performed a 30-second dance craze called the Harlem Shake during a crib break at the underground mine.

The dancers and several onlookers were told that contractor Barminco had banned them from all of its projects for life.

In 2011 seven Pilbara mine workers were either sacked or suspended for planking, which involves somebody lying flat on their stomach in an unusual environment, at Mt Whaleback and another mine.

Only two workers planked while the others, including a supervisor, were dismissed for watching and taking photos.

Also with the ice bucket challenge thing, most people don't really realize how loving heavy water is.

You fill a large cooler with water you're going to have a hard time upending it without dropping it everywhere, because that water is heavy and it's loving moving around too.

Not telemarketers, scam artists selling fake computer fixing, don't misrepresent the situation, and personal time is different from work time. I don't gently caress around at work. And excuse me for not wanting to cover people for their addiction. My schadenfreude is knowing I'm better than you, because apparently I can afford personal time once in a while to gently caress with criminals, whereas you're so pressed for time you can't even post factual information.

Shut the fuck up and get out. Have fun being a slave of the rich and powerful.
For example, despite the difficulty of calculating "presenteeism" (lower on-the-job productivity), studies have consistently demonstrated that employees who smoke are less productive than employees who do not. For example, one recent study reviewed more than 45,000 employee surveys from 147 U.S. employers. It found that mean hours of lost productivity per year due to presenteeism were 76.5 hours for a smoker compared to 42.8 hours for a never smoker and 56.0 hours for a former smoker. The excess presenteeism of 33.7 hours per year (for a smoker compared to a never smoker) equals approximately 2% of hours worked per year. In addition, employers who allow smoking in or around their facilities or vehicles experience extra housekeeping, maintenance, ventilation, and fire insurance costs,  [1656]  as well as potential legal liability for secondhand-smoke exposure to non-smoking employees. Beyond these costs are increased risks of occupational disease compensation for those employees who may already have exposure to other health risks such as asbestos, irritant gasses, or inhaled particulates. Smoking employees are also more likely to suffer work-related disability and on-the-job accidents, injuries, and fatalities. There also may be intangible costs associated with a smoker's personal presentation to customers or the public, especially in health-related industries. The only potentially offsetting savings associated with smoking employees is diminished use of pension benefits in defined-benefits plans due to premature death. This "death benefit," however, is only relevant for employers who use defined-benefit pension plans - currently fewer than one in four private employers. It does not impact the larger number of employers who use defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s. Even for employers with defined-benefits plans, however, the amount of the "death benefit" is clearly dwarfed by the aggregate of other costs incurred.  [1657]  Given these healthcare and productivity costs, the smoking employee brings a substantial financial burden with him to work, even if he does not smoke while he is there. The extra cost of a smoking employee obviously varies considerably across industries, occupations, and benefit packages. Our review of previously published studies, however, suggests that, on average, private employers incur excess costs exceeding $ 4000 per year for each employee who smokes (in comparison to a non-smoking employee).
