To be a proper rad 80's action film you have to work the name of the film into the dialog somehow.

My favourite is the classic "You gave me a Raw Deal"

Death Benefit seems like it would be hard to make it seem natural.

I can understand getting fired/blacklisted for loving around with big machines dropping stuff on people, but getting fired for doing the Harlem Shake?

The thing with the mining industry, that a lot of people don't get, is that cocking around and not being strict with safety isn't like an office where you might sprain your ankle or fall over and break your arm. Generally, gently caress ups on a mine site come with body counts. If guys are willing to do that sort of poo poo with thousand-ton earth moving equipment and doing anything other than pay attention to their job and the safety of themselves and others, then I don't want to work with them half a mile underground and firing them is the right thing to do.

I'm sure there will be plenty of people who are going to jump down my throat for being the fun police, but if you've never worked in an environment where someone can stop paying attention for a minute and kill a dozen people, then you have no idea what you're talking about. Look at the wikipedia page for coal mine accidents in China if you want a clear picture of what not caring about safety does to miners. Here's a hint: it kills them by the thousand.

That article also mentions the six-figure salaries these guys were getting. Is it really that hard to expect that if I'm going to pay a guy more than a hundred thousand dollars a year, to do something he'd probably get fifty or sixty grand for in the city, that he have some personal responsibility and mindfulness of safety?

Gonna have to go with Memento on this one: gently caress around on your own time, in a place not hours from the local hospital, with machines and items that won't kill you viscerally if your hand slips while you're doing your oh-so-trendy-and-funny thing.

edit: Oh, and not while you're on the job so you can't sue your employer for not screening you for having the mentality of a coke-snorting five-year-old tumblrite when he hired you on.

I don't think you get this thread.

Also Dagen H was a pretty uneventful day once the switch was complete. The photos look chaotic but the day of, and for several weeks afterward, injuries from motor vehicle collisions were below average.

While I completely agree with you, I am having troubling working out the risks involved with jiggling on the spot for 30 seconds during your break time:

quote:

Last year, up to 15 mine workers at Agnew Gold Mine in the Goldfields were sacked for safety breaches when eight men performed a 30-second dance craze called the Harlem Shake during a crib break at the underground mine. The dancers and several onlookers were told that contractor Barminco had banned them from all of its projects for life.

In 2011 seven Pilbara mine workers were either sacked or suspended for planking, which involves somebody lying flat on their stomach in an unusual environment, at Mt Whaleback and another mine.
Only two workers planked while the others, including a supervisor, were dismissed for watching and taking photos.

Or watching someone lie down for 30 seconds.

Someone laying flat down on the ground could mean a lot of very bad things are happening in a mine, and if people are ignoring someone injured because "oh he's just planking again" the next time it happens, then that puts everyone in danger.

Well they were on a crib break, which means they should have been in a crib, or small tunnel off the main one. The huge drill behind them and floodlights say they were still on the main decline. Also, the one dude rolling around on the ground? They're mining gold, which means the mud he's rolling around in is probably toxic and 50/50 it's also carcinogenic. His form is excellent though.
