Is Cut+Fire any good? Does it average out the resistances to both, or what?

The game just picks whatever element would hit the target the hardest. If an enemy has 25% Cut resistance but 150% Fire resistance, the game would consider the Fire resistance when calculating fire damage.

It doesn't really matter though because elemental weapons only apply to normal attacks. Putting this thing on Zack wouldn't suddenly make Hurricane deal Cut+Fire damage, for example.

Literally who?

That's something I've noticed about EO2U as a whole. Occasionally there'll be something new and interesting that wasn't in EO2, but either due to a lack of time or just :effort: it's not nearly as good as it could be.

Stuff like the elemental weapons only working on normal attacks (though admittedly, having something like a Cut+Ice katana and using Flame Grater to hit the best of 3 different elements seems kinda OP), the Ginnungagap bosses being reshuffled, Fafnir as a class being either :gizz: or :flaccid: with no real in-between, the whole concept of giant sections of the map being DLC only... It seems that EO2U development was kinda rushed.

I mean, the elemental weapons not affecting skills thing has been true ever since they were introduced in EO2 (I don't think there were any in EO1).

I'm also evidently in the minority about the DLC sections since I think the floors on their own still work well enough without them.

I do agree on the Ginnungagap boss stuff and Fafnir's power curve, though.

There were. And like the rest of the series, elemental weapons had no effect on skills either. But in that case, it was for balance reasons. Skills would have gotten a massive power boost due to how composite attacks had their own separate damage formula in EO1 instead of using the system we got now.

The Frost King and Thunder Queen seem like the devs didn't want those assets to go to waste, so they just came up with some boss fights with them and just put them up as DLC.

Still begs the question of why they were removed in the first place. Having them be there instead of Basilisk and Arachne would make a lot of sense. Just make Bassie and Arachne the DLC ones instead.

Update 35: I Couldn't Think of a Title

G-good morning, every-- Oh, Realga, Sophie, you both look exhausted...
I'm surprised you didn't hear what happened last night...
Rr?
Stardust and Jackie wanted to read something in that big book of old entertainment methods Colette had similar to that story about ghosts Realga was reading--
I was skimming it. Anyway, they found some...uh, some strange stuff. And then they tried to burn the book. And then Colette got really upset.
We were mediating that argument for hours... At least we saved the book in the end.
No time to be tired. We've got a world tree that needs exploring.

Yep, we're finally going back into Yggdrasil proper after pretty much a real-life month of being stuck in secret areas the game didn't expect us to do as early as we did, and Ginnungagap.

Before we do that, though, let's set up some new ad campaigns, because I haven't done that in forever. I realize I'm really inconsistent with the restaurant stuff, I'll try to get better about it from here on out.

Let's start by investing a little money in town development.

Oh hello, that's new.

Please, can we just stay in the slums until the Gourmet King leaves? He's buying everyone free food!
Staying in the slums for free food, or getting back to our exploration, which the Duchy is expecting us to do. Hard choice.

Regina mentioned the Gourmet King quite a while back, but basically he'll sometimes show up in random wards, and he's your cue to just throw the most expensive food you have at the ward he's in, because it will sell a lot, regardless of the tastes of whatever groups are in the area at the time. He counts for getting better Grimoire Trade entries, too.

...I should've just thrown the most expensive food I have, but this'll do.

And I got pretty lucky with him somehow being in two wards at once.

Better.

This should fit the Survivalists' tastes.

It's so beautiful...
Even after all my years of travelling, only the Porcelain Forest can match up to this.
Isn't that place is restricted to the Armoroad nobility or something? Oh, whatever, this place is a sight for sore eyes after that dark ruin.
Everything looks like candy...

Don't look down don't look down don't look down...
Ooh, the others didn't mention anything about floating islands.

Shortcuts in the 4th Stratum look like these tiny wooden stumps.

Pink vegetables, mm?
Aww, it's not sweet.

First Mine point of the floor.

I dunno how you mine potatoes, but whatever. We're exploring a tree that has different sections inside/on top of it that have wildly different climates and are inhabited by all kinds of weird monsters, I don't think questioning logic is appropriate by this point.

Here's a really small secret, containing...

Another fight basically in front of a chest.

Rrrerrgh...
Makes sense that a bear would be at odds with bees.

Waspior
HP: 371, STR: 30, TEC: 23, VIT: 21, AGI: 32, LUC: 24
Skills:
  • Poison Sting: Uses the legs. Deals 90% melee STR-based Stab damage to one party member. Attempts to inflict poison on the target, with an 80% base chance and 35 base poison damage (around 60 adjusted for level). Has no speed modifier and 99 base accuracy.
Drops:
  • Normal: Bee Needle. 40% chance. Sells for 247 en. 1 needed to make Purple Anklet (+16 DEF, +2 TEC, can be equipped by Beasts). 3 needed to make Executor (+108 ATK). 2 Bee Needles and 2 Prehnites needed to make Tepoztopilli (+103 ATK). 10 Bee Needles and 2 Meteoric Spikes needed to make Spiked Colar (+53 ATK).
"A sharp point that pierces anything. Carry it with extreme caution."
  • Conditional: Dense Syrup (Kill while afraid). 80% chance. Sells for 389 en. 1 needed to make Amrita (restores 50 TP to one party member).
"Syrup made more dense from Waspior's fear. It is now sweeter, and calms the mind."
  • Ingredient: Wasp Honey. 1-2 given. 5 needed to make Honey German Potato (Western Food 3; +10 AGI). 2 needed to make Stewed Rhino (Chinese Food 4; +80% panic resistance). 3 needed to make Strawberry Daifuku (Japanese Food 4; Jar item damage doubled). 2 needed to make Sakura Tea (Japanese Food 4; Grimoire Chances have a 40% chance to become Passive Grimoire Chances).
"Honey from a swarm of bees."
Damage resistances:
100% 150% 100% 100% 100! 150%
Disable resistances:
100% 0% 100% 100% 100% 100% 100%
100% 100% 100%
100% 100% 150%

A dangerous bee with a poison-tipped needle. They travel in swarms!

Firstly, say hi to the new battle music. In every EO game aside from EO3, the random encounter music changes once you hit the 4th Stratum (in EO3, it changes when you get to the 3rd Stratum, and then never changes again). I like Inspecting the Resounding Weapons, but that's about the extent of my opinion.

(Neat bit of trivia: Inspecting the Resounding Weapons was originally intended for use in EO1--an early version was included with the "Sekaiju no Meikyuu PROTO-TYPE" CD given as a preorder bonus for EO1 in Japan.)

Moving onto the actual fight itself, Waspiors are incredibly important enemies. Oh, not because of how they fight--they're honestly kind of boring aside from being pretty fast. No, take a moment to read what their conditional makes.

Yep, Waspiors are what you'll have to farm to make Amritas. I'm lucky enough that I have a Hexer with maxed out Evil Eye, so getting a ton of these things even just doing normal exploration is going to be easy, but man, if you're playing Story mode, sucks to be you, since the only non-Grimoire method you have of doing that before late in the 5th Stratum is Random Disease.

Waspiors really don't take much of a beating, what with only having 300 HP and 21 VIT.

Mmm, finally, something really sweet...

Grr-ROR! Hrhrhr!

Any fight with Waspiors in them from now on, I'm going to deliberately avoid killing any of them on the first turn, and first inflicting fear on them. Amritas are really good consumables, and having a boatload of them in stock at Sitoth is always a good thing.

Why would anyone even take the time to hide this junk? When was the last time we had a chest with something good in it?
The one with the Formaldehyde? Which we used to preserve a frog?
Oh, right. I'm still upset about Sitoth ripping us off. That frog body was worth at least 15k en!

SYSTEM: Could a lake or something like it have dried up? You see only sand in the cavity, apart from withered plants and flowers. Doubting that there is anything else here to be had, you decide to return to your investigation.
What an absolute waste of time.
Are you kidding me? We're coming back here with some shovels later, I can feel there's something good below here.

We'll need to remember this spot for a quest later on.

Prism Ladybug
HP: 384, STR: 31, TEC: 25, VIT: 23, AGI: 33, LUC: 24
Skills:
  • Wind Guard: Uses the head. Increases all enemies' resistance to status ailments by 50% for 4 turns. Has no speed modifier.
Drops:
  • Normal: Prism Shell. 45% chance. Sells for 254 en. 1 needed to make Prism Vest (+36 DEF). 3 needed to make Spectrum Axe (+110 ATK).
"Prism Ladybug shell patterned in colors. The design is quite popular among explorers."
Damage resistances:
100% 150% 100% 100% 100% 150%
Disable resistances:
100% 100% 150% 100% 150% 100% 100%
100% 100% 100%
100% 100% 100%

A giant ladybug with a shimmering shell. It summons the wind to protect itself from harm.

Prism Ladybugs can make certain encounter groups a lot more annoying by making tough, hard-hitting enemies harder to inflict ailments on, and that's about the extent of what's interesting about them.

I helped. Kinda.

These things really do not take much of a beating at all. Those were just normal attacks.

So much sweet, sweet syrup...
How do you eat so much sweet food in one sitting...? Doesn't it get tiring after a while?
Mmmm... Nah!

The annoying thing about Amrita grinding is that Dense Syrups aren't a 100% drop rate. 80% is by no means bad, but it's still annoying enough that I want to comment on it.

SYSTEM: You vaguely recall a story about something being buried under cherry blossom trees...
Dig dig dig dig dig go go go go go!
R-realistically, what are we going to-- A-ah... B-bees...
Hm?!
SYSTEM: As you prepare to dig beneath the tree, you sense a malicious presence and take up arms. The threat reveals itself as a mighty swarm of bees streaming from the brush to surround you!
For me? Aww, I don't know...
SYSTEM: There is no escape from the swarm... You must stand and fight!
Well, if you insist!

Just two Waspiors?

If only someone could just cut out the bee part and give me the syrup part.
I mean, first, we have Regina for that. Second, these things are dropping complete honey already. Why not just eat some of that?
The raw syrup tastes better.

Hrr!

SYSTEM: Another wave of bees, as fierce as the last, is surrounding you once more! Cursing your ill-advised curiosity, you have no choice but to engage in battle again!
Can we stuff the syrup I don't eat in some boxes or something?
I didn't pack anything that could contain that stuff. Unless you want everything in our bag to get really sticky--
Oh, alright.

I'm sure you get the point now.

SYSTEM: There are more here than before, but this does seem to be the last of them... With the end of the battle finally in sight, you grip your weapons tighter to face the advancing enemies!
Why do these bees even care about this spot...?

Doesn't matter now.

Sure, it was tedious, but we got a lot of Dense Syrups out of it.

Alright, people, the bees are gone, let's get to digging, chop-chop!
Why'd you even become a Medic if you're more suited for an office position?
...Long story from when I was a kid. C'mon, just get digging.
SYSTEM: Quite some time later, you unearth a small hempen sack in the ground. You brush the dirt off it and look inside to find a book containing cooking recipes. You place the book with the rest of your things and quickly leave the area before another horde of monsters finds you.
Apicius really knew how to hide his recipes, huh?
I wonder how he even got this high up in the Labyrinth...

Fighting off a couple of bees was definitely worth it for this.

O-over there...

SYSTEM: The bird has evidently not noticed you... It is not yet imperative that you flee. If you are curious about the bird, then you are free to try approaching it.
I do not wanna mess with that thing now. C'mon, back we go.

Luminous Birds are kind of like Ambush Wolves--they change direction every couple of steps, and will aggro on us once we enter their line of sight. However, unlike Ambush Wolves, they ignore terrain, and will pass over gaps we cannot to get to us.

Given that the path from here to that nest is just that small, 1-tile wide twist, evading the bird is effectively impossible. I don't feel like fighting it now, after having our TP depleted quite a bit by the bees, so I just go back to mapping out the central area.

Ptarmigan
HP: 423, STR: 29, TEC: 28, VIT: 22, AGI: 24, LUC: 26
Skills:
  • Sealing Bolt: Uses the head. Deals 150% ranged TEC-based volt damage to one party member. Attempts to bind the hit target's head, with an 80% chance. Has a 70% speed modifier and 120 base accuracy.
Drops:
  • Normal: Gold Crest. 50% chance. Sells for 243 en. 1 needed to make Golden Wand (+79 ATK, +20 HP, +40 TP). 3 needed to make Morion (+26 DEF, can be equipped by Beasts). 7 needed to make Fortune Necklace (+7 LUC). 15 needed to make Gold Collar (+47 DEF).
"Beautiful golden crest from a bird's head. Some fashion it into accessories for luck."
  • Ingredient: Ptar Breast. 1-2 given. 3 needed to make Shell Yakiniku (Japanese Food 4; paralyzed enemies have a 99% chance to not act).
    "Lean, light bird breast."
Damage resistances:
100% 100% 100% 100% 100% 50%
Disable resistances:
50% 100% 100% 100% 100% 100% 100%
100% 100% 100%
150% 100% 100%

A small bird of the forest who hunts its prey with electricity.

Ptarmigans can be a real nuisance if they decide to target your casters, since the base chance on Sealing Bolt is high enough that even their mediocre LUC doesn't matter a ton.

Okay, I'm going to avoid asking a question for once, and I'll instead theorize: do you make things fall asleep by biting their nerves or something?
Maybe? I was just biting the thing, same as any other time.

Goodbye, foul penguin.

I decided to go back to town at this point to lighten our pack's load a little, and to rest up.

Executor is unlocked by selling 3 Bee Needles. Only 14 minutes or so into 16F and already we have a sword better than the Flamberge.

Prism Vest (+36 DEF) is unlocked by selling 1 Prism Shell. I still care more about extra stats on the party members we have that only equip clothes, rather than raw DEF.

Purple Anklet (+16 DEF, +2 TEC, can be equipped by Beasts) is unlocked by selling 1 Bee Needle. I'd buy a pair for Stardust if she was in the party, but she isn't.

Amrita (restores 50 TP to one party member) is made from 1 Dense Syrup. These things, as I've said multiple times now, are absolutely invaluable and until we can unlock Amrita IIs 12 floors from now, I'm going to make sure we're constantly stocked up.

Wait a minute, why are we even scared of this thing? We've fought worse.
I don't know, is there any reason we should...?
To assert dominance over the Labyrinth's flora.
It's been a long time since I had bird meat...

Luminous Bird
HP: 9330, STR: 43, TEC: 43, VIT: 37, AGI: 36, LUC: 34
Skills:
  • Brutal Ray: Does nothing for one turn. Can be interrupted by Blast Grenades, which will also stun the user for one turn. Uses the head. Deals 220% ranged TEC-based Almighty damage to each party member. Has a 60% speed modifier and 150 base accuracy.
Drops:
  • Normal: Gold Claw. 100% chance. Sells for 1500 en. 1 needed to make Light Blade (+120 ATK, +10 TP, +1 TEC). 3 needed to make Gold Claw (+128 ATK, +3 AGI).
"Sharp claws that rip easily through flesh. Some gather it only for the color."
Damage resistances:
100% 150% 100% 75% 75% 75%
Disable resistances:
100% 50% 25% 25% 50% 50% 50%
10% 10% 10%
50% 50% 50%

With its sharp beak and swift movements, these birds are more deadly than they seem...

Luminous Birds suck if you don't have Blast Grenades, and are pretty big jokes if you do. As long as you have at least one way to stop Brutal Ray, you'll be fine. Their normal attacks hit pretty hard, but they're just normal attacks--as long as you remember to upgrade your party's armor (I'm still embarassed by that), you'll be fine.

Sophie has a 28 LUC advantage on the Luminous Bird, so I'm basically 100% sure she'll bind the thing's head. I decided to have Freyja use Cuffs for slightly more damage, as a result.

I'm banking on the fact that the Luminous Bird will just charge up on this turn, so I have Ursa cast Protection Vow.

And like I just said, Sophie will try to bind the bird's head.

D-do we have any of those bombs to startle it...?
They're right here, don't worry.

Oh well.

Guess we don't even need the bombs now.

Immovable's kind of pointless here, honestly.

Still gonna let Freyja try to handle arm binds.

Evidently a mistake.

Bleh. Even with a really good katana, Asriel's damage still isn't great. Probably time to rest him--in fact, I'm gonna do it at the end of the update.

Mm, it tastes like it's already cooked...

Too bad.

I just have Freyja switch to Trance + Ecstasy at this point.

Jesus christ, that's 26% of the Luminous Bird's HP.

Well, knowing my luck, one bind's probably fallen off.

And of course it was the most important one.

Eh, screw it.

Good thing I keep some of these on hand.

Thanks for letting us know before you throw that this time.
That was, like, 6 months ago, come on.

I'm obligated to screenshot every Ecstasy.

What a waste.

I guess I shouldn't have been so worried...

Imagine this party with, like, Zack instead of Freyja. Bleh.

...That's it? That's the floor?
I guess that bird was supposed to make us go through a big puzzle.
...We might be missing some treasure! Alright, let's go map out the rest of this.

Yeah, if you can kill that Luminous Bird, you can basically skip the entire floor. The entirety of the rest of the floor is supposed to lead you to how to lure the bird away from the nest blocking you from the exit.

Might as well just activate the easy shortcut to the exit while we're here.

The other mine point, which gives out Duck Nuts--quite possibly the silliest name for something I've ever heard.

...Well, it's not valuable, but it's useful, I guess.

Another nest, and...

Another Luminous Bird.

I draw aggro from the Luminous Bird, firstly.

And then I bolt for the door.

Notice how the Luminous Bird is now at the other nest, rather than the one it started at. When we leave the room after drawing a Luminous Bird's aggro, it will just perch itself on the closest nest. This is how the puzzles on this floor work: figure out how to draw the Luminous Bird to a nest where it won't impedge your path.

Metal Tortoise
HP: 1416, STR: 38, TEC: 27, VIT: 33, AGI: 17, LUC: 27
Skills:
  • Crushing Jaw: Uses the head. Deals 110% melee STR-based Bash damage to each party member. Has an 80% speed modifier and 99 base accuracy.
Drops:
  • Normal: Century Shell. Sells for 512 en. 1 needed to make Turtle Claw (+115 ATK). 9 needed to make Physical Guard (+10% Cut, Stab, and Bash resistance). 1 Malachite and 2 Century Shells needed to make Kishindaio (+116 ATK). 5 Century Shells and 2 Plum Quills needed to make Pattisa (+114 ATK).
"Shell of a tortoise said to live to 100. Layering these makes fine protective gear."
  • Ingredient: Metal Shell. 1 given. 1 needed to make Shell Yakiniku (Japanese Food 4; paralyzed enemies have a 99% chance to not act).
    "Fended off many attacks."
Damage resistances:
75% 75% 75% 125% 125% 125%
Disable resistances:
100% 150% 50% 100% 50% 100% 100%
100% 100% 50%
50% 100% 100%

A giant turtle with a tough shell and even tougher jaws.

Hey, look, a major annoyance. 1416 HP is already kind of a lot for a random encounter, and then we also have to deal with the fact that this thing has 75% resistance to all physical damage. Asriel thankfully has Flame Grater to speed things up a little, but that chews through quite a lot of his TP.

How lucky.

Like I said, it speeds things up, but not by a lot.

Um, how are we going to carry this shell back to town?
Just let Ursa do it, I'm sure she can handle it.
Rrgh.

Ick. These things are kinda tasteless...

Encounters like that make me miss Stardust. That would've been over so much more quickly with her.

Onto the next room, where the intended solution is to get to the path near the door with nothing drawn beyond it, which will make the Luminous Bird settle in that nest, and then head for the other door we can see here.

Killing the Luminous Bird (in a fight where nothing was really that different from the earlier one) is an option too.

Still working on Auto-Lick.

Oh, right. Remember how the Giant Ladybugs in the 1st Stratu could summon Rafflesias if they were left alone in a fight?

Giant blue and purple flowers with lots of teeth. Okay, sure. Why not.
It looks like it'd make for some pretty good garnishings.

Prism Ladybugs can do that, too!

Except that Wrath Blooms are far less threatening to us now, relative to how threatening Rafflesias were to us on 3F.

Cannibalize tries to kill another enemy in exchange for increasing the Wrath Bloom's physical/elemental attack, incidentally.

Easy enough.

And, for posterity, here's the room where we're supposed to be able to solve the last Luminous Bird puzzle.

At this point, I went back to town to save, and because the trek to the stairs from that last room is longer than from the start of the floor.

Ooh, this should be good.

...Why were we not doing this more before?!

Good lord, that's more than we got for that Ginnungagap quest we just finished.

We got a lot of guests in Grimoire Trade out of it, too.

I opted to trade this Beast Roar Grimoire for an HP Up level 9 (+18% max HP) for Ursa...

This Ecstasy Grimoire for a Curb ATK Up level 5 (1.23x multiplier applied to infliction chances) for Sophie...

And this Hit-Taker Grimoire for a TP Up level 6 (+14% max TP) for Realga.

Might as well use some of that money we just got to develop the town more.

And I'm gonna try to get in the habit of consistently setting up ad campaigns before doing more explorations.

Light Blade (+120 ATK, +10 TP, +1 TEC) is unlocked by selling 1 Gold Claw. This is one of the better 4th Stratum swords, and that small TEC bonus is nice for War Magi.

Golden Wand (+79 ATK, +20 HP, +40 TP) is unlocked by selling 1 Gold Crest. At this point in the game, raw HP and TP aren't that great on staff users, and the ATK bonus is terrible if you're using it for War Edge skills or Combat Medics.

Plant Whip (+118 ATK) is unlocked by selling 1 Lilac Vine (the Wrath Bloom's normal drop). I maybe could've bought this for Freyja, since it's an upgrade in terms of ATK and I don't care about Force Up, but I decided to hold off for now.

Morion (+26 DEF) is unlocked by selling 3 Gold Crests. It's a boring helmet with no extra attributes.

NOW we're done with the floor.

And back to town we go.

We're done for the day, but sure, I'll take it!
Today's lunch is special, you know! My daughter made it just for you! I told her all about you, and out of nowhere, she suddenly said she wanted to make you a lunchbox.
Good to see that people like us here, I guess. More than I can say for hat guy's guild back when they were in Etria...
Isn't that precious? Well, she is my daughter, after all. She's growing up to be just like me! Now go up there and find that castle! Good luck! We'll be cheering for you.

Oh, Sophie, the clasp on your boot is loose.
...But I don't wear boots.
...There, that should do it. Not bad, right? I am my father's daughter, after all... I can fix it if you ever need me to!
Thanks, I guess.
I just want to learn more, so that I'll be able to better help you... One day, I'll be good enough to be of proper use to you...so please, be patient until then!

Writing what?
Oh, it's nothing really. I was just putting together the recipes we made into a simpler form. All of Apicius's recipes aren't exactly straightforward, so I thought it might be better to write them simply into a book.
Good idea! It'd be awful if future people lost the ability to make these foods.
...Plus, I think it'll make a good memoir of sorts too, don't you think?

There've been so many useless guilds lately. It's making me sick!
You'd think us getting that high would set a new bar of quality for newer guilds, but I guess not.
Oh, right. I've been meaning to ask-- How high have yeh lot gone now?
T-the 17th floor...
Wh-What!? The 17th floor!? Yeh serious!? drat, that's really somethin--Uh. Oops. Shouldn't be yellin' like that. Hey, yeh probably shouldn't be braggin' about this to the other guilds.
Why not? We've worked hard to get to this point.
Huh? Why? Ain't it obvious...? Well, 'cause not all explorers are doin' as well as yeh. It'd be a shame if someone holds some grudge against yeh for something silly like that. Best avoid trouble, eh? All yeh really need to do is focus on the Labyrinth and find that castle!

Haughty doctor:

I'd say I'm rather unexciting, and my methods of exploration are thus similarly unexciting. That's simply my way, but... Those rhinos and birds that rush at you... They're simply intolerable! If only they'd follow my lead, and move at a slow pace... Ah, but I suppose it's not like they can move quickly whenever they please. Earlier today, I miscalculated my distance and was spotted, so I ran...but they didn't immediately pursue me. Thus, I was able to return and enjoy the delicious food and drink back home in civilization once more. Life is good. ...For a moment, I believed I would meet my end back there.

We'll meet the rhinos she's talking about on 17F.

Ostentatious woman:

It's almost scary, isn't it...? Have you all heard? It was just a rumor at the bar, but I heard that there are bird people in the Labyrinth...
Tyler said they ran into a winged human-looking person, yeah.
The great Yggdrasil is so vast, and so many monsters live in there, so it's not a surprise that there are people inside... But can bird people even speak!? I mean, birds have beaks for mouths. So... how would they even...? Even if they came all the way to Lagaard, if they can only say “cheep cheep", then what are we going to say? What do you think?
Ever consider that they might just...not have beaks?

We're doing fine. I even get most of my food these days just through our trips into the Labyrinth!
The fact that she hasn't gotten ill and collapsed from eating mostly monster meat... At this point, I'm gonna call it a medical anomaly.
You've gone beyond all we know of the Labyrinth... Be careful. You're on unexplored grounds. I heard the Duke's guards were sent to the fourth stratum based on your findings...but as you'd guess, they were wiped out.
I can't think of a single instance where the guards have been helpful to us yet.
By now, there's only a few explorers remaining in High Lagaard that can keep up with you all... including myself. In a one-on-one duel, my victory would be assured, but against all of you... well. I doubt I'd make it out alive.

I'd be careful about saying that. Theoretically, the action economy would be skewed in our favor, but there's only so much that advantage can afford when someone's massively above your level.

What's the phrase...? Something like: “Many in harmony surpass one in perfection." There is no doubt in my mind. Out of all of us, you are the closest to finding the floating castle. I'm curious indeed to see how far your skills will take you. I wish the best of luck to you, Lumen...

Starts with an L? Ends with "ooh men?"
...Ah yes, it was Lumen! Am I correct?
Yep.
Yes, indeed. How is the exploration going? Did you see the castle?
We're h-high up, but not that high up...
...Ah, so you haven't yet. This is quite the journey for you, is it not? I must say you have worked well for us indeed. Allow me to give you my thanks. I look forward to your safe return. Take care, explorers.

With all that out of the way, let's take on some quests.

The item trade III:

Oh, there yeh are! I knew that yeh folks would take that one.
Rr?
Mmm? Well, yeh already took everything else that shop had to offer. Why stop now? Haw haw haw! Like always, ask the requester for the details. Head over to Sitoth Trading and get the specifics. Awright then, g'luck!

I forgot to do that in my recording. Whoops. The description gives away that they want us to make a Pattisa, anyway.

Before the festivities:

Oh, that quest! See, we got a festival comin' up around here, but we don't have all the materials to set up yet. They need... 8 Arc Branches, seems like. We need that if we're gonna make the stuff for the festival, so make it snappy, awright? The festival can't start until we got 'em! Hurry up and go find some!
Sounds like a job for those creepy Byeahs.
You'd think you'd have gotten over that by now.
Those things are just inherently creepy, okay?

Playing Cupid III:

Are yeh serious? Another one from that sad sack? The lad doesn't know when to quit...
I can probably guess how it's gonna go, but oh well. Tell us what happened now.
Sounds like his last gift was a wash, and now she isn't even on speaking terms with him. This time, he's on the scent of something incredibly rare, and needs someone to fetch it. Have yeh heard of the Small Sandland before? Seems it's a rare sight in the Labyrinth.
A rare sight? It's near the entrance of 16F.
Some say it spawns from rotted trees, some say from monster offal, but no one's certain. I've heard that in the sandland, given the right humidity and temperature, some sandy minerals can crystallize... The crystal form is s'posed to look like a rose, so they call it a Wood Rose. It's one of those things that's supposed to bring yeh luck, but that's all a load of hooey. But the ladies fall for it, so any man that can deliver one is a hero in their eyes.
Mm-hm. Yeah. Sure. Maybe I'd be more impressed with somnething like that if I wasn't exploring the Labyrinth.
I've already got enough luck from this staff, necklace, and hat!
...Oho, Cass, are you mayhaps seeking this Wooden Rose Thorn? That was what it was called, right?
Me? Are yeh daft? I don't need a bloody crystal rose to throw at the ladies! The women can't say no to a man with a bar like mine, if yeh catch my meaning! Haw haw!
I'm going to choose to believe you're talking about the literal bar and I'm not thinking about this any further.
Anyways... I've heard talk of a few of them sandlands being seen on the 16th floor. Dunno if any of 'em would have this Wood Rose, but they say it's probably nearby if it looks like a pond dried up. Alright, it's yer job now! G'luck!

We'll take care of that quest and 17F next time.

Update 14: Fool Me Twice

After beating Basilisk, the townsfolk have new stuff to say to us.

Hope it's not anything too dangerous. ...If you ever need help, you can always come talk to me, alright? Don't just brood over it all on your own! Whatever anyone says about you, I'll always be on your side!
...I kinda get the feeling she has the wrong impression of us.

Quona has nothing new to say, but here's an audio only conversation we can hear now.

Ah, Flavio! I tried that laundry method you told me about. It worked a treat!
Right? I heard that they did it that way at the orphanage. Gets rid of stains like magic!
Indeed! Seeing them disappear was so satisfying. Such knowledge you have! No wonder you're from the Midgard Library!
Oh no, it's really nothing. By the way, do you know this trick too?
Flavio's gone native.
They get along so well.

I'm glad she's so interested in our stock, but to see her handling valuables like that... um, makes me a little nervous.

Sorry about that.
Oh, no! I didn't mean for you to apologize! It's just... a little unnerving.

There's not much I can really do...
You'd probably have better luck asking the old man. He's her chaperone, after all.
Wh--Hold on now. Chaperone? Don't be ridiculous.
Mmhm. It's backwards. I'm the one watching over Trand.
Chloe, you idiot... that's even more ridiculous.
U-Um, no fighting in the store!

And here's an audio only conversation that we can hear now.

Daaad! I brought the things you asked for! I'm putting them over here!
Huh.
Huh? Mr. Flavio? Is there something you'd like?
Oh oh, no no, it's not that that. I was just thinking how nice it is to see a family-run shop.
*Laughs* Is that so? It's not uncommon in High Lagaard.
That's true, I suppose. But I still admire it.

...All esteemed families have some kind of obligations that bind them. You'd better make sure to be there for her.

And here's her 2nd Stratum audio conversation.

Order up, Ms. Regina!
Got it.
Wait, why are you taking orders?
Well uh, a customer called me over and uh-oh! I can take those plates, sir!
He's supposed to be a skilled explorer, right? Why is he so modest?
That's part of what makes Sir Flavio so wonderful!

What I'm talking bout? 'Course I'm talking 'bout the treasure! The loot! The goods! What else would I be talking 'bout! Yeh lot owe me, so if yeh find somethin' nice, yeh gotta tell me first. Yeh hear me? Haw haw haw!

Here's Cass' audio conversation.

C'mon! Eat more meat, yer too drat skinny!
I am eating! Am I that skinny? I mean I've been working out pretty hard, but compared to him, yeah.
Hang in there, kid.
Erk! You were listening!?

...A locked door is barring the way...? I'm afraid I don't have enough information to offer much help. ...However, it's possible the Minister would know something. You could try going to the Duke's Palace.

Here's the Guildmaster's audio conversation.

The guildmaster seems so strong. She's the picture of a veteran warrior!
You think so too, Sir Flavio? She's truly amazing.
Mmhmm! I really look up to people like her!
Ahem. I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't discuss me as if I wasn't here.
Forget it. They don't think you can hear them.

Were you able to complete the ritual, Lady Arianna?
Well... Now that Ginnungagap is in ruins, it has been difficult for us to find the Hall of Sealing... I have yet to fulfill my mission.
What...!? Hrm, I did not expect the site to be in such disrepair... I must apologize that we did not maintain the area.
There is no need to apologize, Minister. After all, I've heard that it is normally forbidden to enter the Ginnungagap. Surely it is not the fault of High Lagaard if the place has lapsed into ruin.
But we do have one specific inquiry... We found a mysterious door while exploring the Ginnungagap. It appears this door continues to the ritual hall, but we are unable to open it. We were left with a hint to gain greater power... Might there be any kind of old stories or clues we can use? Perhaps any records of the previous ritual?
Hmm... I'm afraid there are no tales of the ritual that I know of. But... there may be a way to find out about this mysterious power, as well as what happened during the previous ritual.
Really!? Do you mind telling us about it?
Of course. Keep in mind, though, I cannot say any of this with absolute certainty... There is actually a branch of government called the ceremonial bureau. They keep records of traditional folklore. They are tasked with the duty of studying and recording local history, legends, and folklore. I believe Midgard has a similar branch as well, yes?
We've been taught that learning from the past is an important part of shaping the future.
Well put. However... our ceremonial bureau was closed down, ten years ago.
Wait--it doesn't exist anymore!? Then... well, how's that gonna help us, Minister?
Don't be so hasty, now. It is true that the branch no longer exists, but those who staffed it still reside in High Lagaard. Perhaps we could ask one of them.
Ah, so this person may have our answer!
Yes. Unfortunately... the man in question is quite eccentric, and he may not give me an answer...
Even a direct question from the Minister!?
After the ceremonial bureau was shut down, he locked himself in seclusion to continue his experiments and research... The only thing he's ever interested in is his research, and I'm afraid unless it benefits him, he won't give it a second thought.

Perhaps some personal interrogation is in order.

Could we meet him in person?
I'm afraid his mood may only be soured by the sudden appearance of questioning strangers. Well, I'll go and see if I can get that old hermit to cooperate with us. Please have patience.

Fade to black.

Minister? Did it go well?
Hrm. Unfortunately, Lady Arianna... ...His response is that he will only provide any of his information once his request has been met.
A request?
Indeed. It seems he wishes to obtain a rare material that can only be obtained from a monster deep within the Labyrinth.
Right. Deep within... the Labyrinth.
Yes. Now, if you wish to hear more of the details, then I suggest you first accept this as a mission.

Oh huh. Classic couldn't accept a mission until they reached 8th floor. Let's see what the Duke has to say normally.

Okay, let's see what this guy wants.

...Huh.

What the chief of protocol has asked for is a feather of the legendary beast known as the Salamander.
The legendary beast called the Salamander... Is anything known as to where we might find this monster?
Its nest is a large room on the west side of the 8th floor. That came to us from a very reliable source.
The 8th floor of the forest...? That's pretty far in.

I think that's enough to know about.

......
...There is one thing I must warn you of. The Salamander, they say, is comparable in strength to the Chimaera. The monster is dangerous enough that this fact has not been made public. I would not advise attempting to fight it. Use the map I have provided you with and take pains not to engage it in combat.

Well then, I bid you good luck. ...The chief of protocol is a childhood friend of mine. I ask that you do what you can for him.

So a mission to save the Duke's life got reduced to a mere errand in Story Mode. Anyways, Dubois has something else to say to our party now that we've accepted the mission.

It is reassuring indeed to know that you are setting your sights on the new floor. After all, it was you who slew the king of beasts! If I recall correctly, the next area is the russet forest... Oh, you're surprised I know of it? Several months after the entrance to the forest first opened, we entered the Labyrinth as well. I led a legion of guards... and so many fell victim to the monsters there... The very memory makes a chill run through me. After losing half our men, we realized it was too dangerous to proceed any further, and stopped our expedition. But, with just the five of you... you reached the point where our journey ended. I expect no less from those of the Midgard Library. Ah, forgive me. I ought not to dwell on the past. I look forward to your safe return.

And here's Dubois' audio conversation.

Heh. I'll probably never get used to being here.
There's no need for such anxiety. Does everyone at the Midgard Library share your temperament?
Oh uh, I don't know about that. We had some nobles from other nations and even between us kids at the orphanage, there was this one guy who was always dignified. And another one who never knew when to take a hint. Uh, wait.
Hm?
Could I be the odd one out here?

Seems like one tough enemy. Tackling the Chimaera was bad enough... Are we up to doing this?

We won't know until we try.
...Well, that's true about anything.
Still, I wish you'd take this more seriously. A lot can happen out there in the Labyrinth.
Indeed...
But I believe we'll see it through, so long as we do so together.
Well, they do say, “Those who believe will be saved.”
Trand's being optimistic. Do you have a fever?
I'm always optimistic!
I feel quite encouraged by this. Well! Shall we head directly to the forest?

Ms. Hanna? Goodness, but your arms are full!
Hahaha! You have to hear me out. Something wonderful's happened! I thought I'd prepare a celebratory meal, so I went out and bought ingredients! Here, hold this for me!
Whoa! Hey, this is heavy...!
Really now? I know a strong young boy can do better than that! When my husband was your age, he carried double that. Here, take this too!

This is all on you, Flavio.
I-I can't...! It's physically impossible...!
Hahaha, come on, boys! Are you all set? Then go ahead and carry it all off to my inn!
U-Um...?
Kid, there's no use trying to resist ladies today. Just give in and carry her junk.

Oh wait, we do see Hrothgar again in Story. Whoops.

Oh, and the Guild Guild... I didn't think I'd see you here.
Hahaha! I brought them back with me. These kids helped you out, right? I thought you might want to see them. Besides, you all should hear this too. Beowulf's going to take up exploring the forest again! I was so happy to hear that... I'm making a special meal today! Make sure you come back to have some! I'd better get started preparing! Excuse me, kids!
She blew in like a storm and left like one, too...
Haha, she's always like that. But this is excellent timing, though. We were thinking of doing something to pay our respects to you.

Can I pet Wulfgar?
Haha, go right on ahead. I'm sure he won't complain when you do it.

...… You saved my life... Or something even more precious, perhaps. Once more... Thank you.

...This is awkward.
...Stop that. Seeing you like this is making me feel awkward, too...
You know, Hanna said something before... You're gonna get back in the saddle on exploring the Labyrinth?
Yes. I considered this carefully while recuperating... What we want most is to investigate the forest. We plan to take it at our own pace, slowly, without feeling trapped by a need for revenge. What have you been up to? I don't mean to pry... but you mentioned about preparing for some kind of ritual?
Indeed. Though we haven't been able to begin it yet... We'll be exploring the forest for a bit longer.
I see. Then maybe we'll meet there again someday.

Won't you come with us?
A tempting offer... but I'll stay with Wulfgar a bit longer. I... wish to preserve the Beowulf name. Now, I should be on my way. Hopefully we'll meet again somewhere... someday. I'll pray for your good fortune, wherever I may be.
Yes, definitely!
...Bye.
Look after yourselves, Sir Hrothgar and Wulfgar!

Both innkeepers have something new to say after that. Let's talk to Quona first.

...He looked really big and strong... but you were the ones that rescued him, right...? ...You really are amazing... Hee hee...

And now Hanna.

Bahaha, there's no need to thank me! I just want to see the smiles on you explorers' faces, that's all! It's always lovely to see the people you know happy. Bahaha!

And he said they were going to keep exploring the forest...
Yeah. He had a look in his eyes like a weight finally getting lifted... I actually envy him a little.
Someone we saved got better. That's the best news we could get.
Yes, I must concur. I take great pleasure in knowing that our Guild Guild was such a help to someone…

It was well worth the effort.
...Right.
Well, let's be on the road.
It's a dirty job, but we've gotta suck it up and do it. Let's finish this quick so we can relax at the inn.

O-Oh! I'm sorry! Actually... I-It slipped my mind... I was going to ask for herbs to make a new medicine, but you already sold me what I needed. A-And the medicine's ready. But still, thank you so much! It's thanks to you that we have new cures, and that we can help the sick feel better! Since you sold me these ingredients like I needed, please take whatever reward Mister Bartender has listed. I'll ask for help again if anything comes up, but please don't push yourself, okay?

And here's Abigail's dialogue if you already sold the materials for Medicinal Research to her. Anyways, let's finally get back to the Labyrinth.

Now that plot is no longer barring our way, we can head to the 7th floor.

There's some kind of mineral packed here. I think it's an ore vein?
Hmm. The rock looks pretty hard. It'd take so much time to pry it out that I think we're better off leaving it alone.

You agree to abandon the idea of mining the discolored wall and return to your investigation.

Upon inspection, it seems to be a small, furry animal in the shadow of a large plant. The animal shows no fear of your party and scampers right up to you with a bright squeal.

This seems familiar.

Gracious... How adorable!

I wouldn't get too close to it.
S-Surely you're mistaken... This can't be the same one, and so there is no certainty that it will do the same thing.

As you debate, the small rodent looks up at you with its little, beady eyes... It's cocking its head slightly in a manner that's absolutely adorable. You are tempted to pet the cute creature...

Arianna has a point. Let's pet it!

You kneel down and extend a hand gently, so as not to surprise it. But at that moment...!

Ugh, sheesh! I knew this would happen! Hey, get outta there!

The squirrel obediently runs off, albeit carrying something in its mouth as it goes.

Oh come on! That was actually my last one! :argh:

...Seriously?
It seemed to already know how to sneak into our backpack. It might be a repeat offender.
Well, there's certainly enough explorers around for it to practice on. But why's it so interested in the thread?
...What a saddening development.

You decide to press on with your investigation, this time with renewed understanding of the forest's hazards.

I'm not staying on this floor with no Ariadne Threads. Let's go back to town.

Since Ragnar missed Hanna's 7F dialogue, I'll show it off myself.

Bahaha! Pretty good, isn't it...? You know, my daughter's actually the one that made this. She's so kind, and clever, too... She's going to be a heartbreaker when she grows up. Just like her dear mother, eh? What? You don't believe me? Why, I used to be even more beautiful than I am now! Bahaha!

Quona has nothing new to say. I could really get some rest right now.

As you sit there, you hear a knock at your door. Who could it be at this hour...?

And the next inn scene that we'll be seeing is Chloe's.

I'm too hungry to sleep. I was about to go out for something to eat. Do you want to come?

Sounds good!
Mm-hm. Come on.

What're the two of yeh doin' here this late? Hmm?
There's only one thing to do at a bar.
Thick bison steak. Medium rare. And an oxtail soup. And an assortment of fried food.
...Yeh know, a bar ain't a cafeteria... Ah, well, I s'pose yeh're regulars anyway. Oi, Knight. Yeh're gonna have somethin' to eat too, right?

Let's have what Chloe's having.

Haw haw! Hungry, are yeh? Alrighty, I'll fix something up for yeh. Wait right there!
Good choice. I have very good taste. We'll both have a delicious meal.
...Knight. Are you feeling okay? You got new powers, but do you feel any different?

...I'm a little scared.
Scared? Why? Are you worried that you won't be able to turn back after you transform? You don't have to worry about that. You'll always be you, no matter what you look like.
Arianna and Flavio probably won't mind at all either. I like Trand whatever he looks like, because he'll always be Trand. It's the same thing. ...Right?

You're right.
Mhm. I know I'm right.
......
I hope the food gets here soon.

What happened to the serious talk?
Waiting for the food to come is serious business. I love meat. I'm very serious about the things I love.
Trand told me once. You should always enjoy it when you eat. Trand says he doesn't like eating a lot, but he says he enjoys watching me eat.
That's why I always enjoy it when I eat.

Meat!
Haw! Yeh always bite into these things like they're the greatest thing in the world! Makes all that effort worth it! And here, this one's on the house.
Chicken karaage!
That's right Missy. Yeh love this stuff, don't yeh? Make sure that yeh share it with him, now.
Yay. Karaage is so good.

This is all mine!
Knight. You weren't listening. He said this is for the two of us.
We're going to share it. Nicely. Hogging all the karaage won't be forgiven.
Here. This is your share of the karaage, Knight. ...Hey, Knight. I want to continue that conversation we were having. I think... Trand also likes watching Knight and the others eat too, recently. Not just me.
I think I understand. Flavio is a really picky eater. He's also really bad at eating fish. It's funny to watch. And Arianna eats really gracefully. She's really good at pointing out the ingredients. Everyone eats differently. It's interesting. I had a big family back at home. So when I eat with Guild, it feels really nostalgic and makes me happy. I'm sure Trand feels the same way. So you need to eat more, Knight.

Alright.
We should eat a lot. A whole lot. Then there'll be lots of things that Trand likes.

Time to eat!

Having both eaten until full, the two of you return to your rooms and rest in preparation for the next day.

Abigail's and Regina's dialogue is the same as in Classic, but Cass has something new to say.

There's no stoppin' that kid. Even after all he's been through, he still ain't quitting the explorer game. Guess I'll be stuck watchin' over 'em and makin' sure they don't do anything reckless..,
... You're complaining. But you seem happy. Why?
Happy? Bah! What yeh talking 'bout!? I'm just worried 'bout 'em. S'pose I'm gonna get some more business again. Better get a couple treats ready for Wulfgar! Haw haw haw!

...As he was registering, he said he'd make sure you all would be the first to know. After all he's been through, I was afraid he would never return to the Labyrinth... but it seems I was worried for nothing. ...He is indeed a true explorer.

Marion also has additional dialogue if we talk to her again.

...Hm. By now, you're more experienced than a great deal of explorers, so it may not be necessary, but I'll pass on some advice. Strength isn't simply measured by how many enemies you've defeated. What's important is that you survive. Insight, analysis, quick decision making, and the ability to act when needed. If you're lacking any of these, you won't succeed. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Try to avoid any unnecessary risks.

...By the way, are you aware of the legend surrounding High Lagaard? It is said that long ago, the Duke's ancestor descended to the land from the floating castle.
Ah, yes, I have heard of this before. It is the legend of the founding of High Lagaard itself.
Huh... sounds like some fairy-tale to me. How would they even get down here? What, did they have wings or something?
Indeed, there are many that brush it off as some outlandish tale. Nobody knows the truth, of course... Still, I thought you might like to know of the legend. It's been passed down for generations, and it's at least intriguing. I bid you farewell, then. I look forward to your further endeavors.

Back on the 7th floor...

Sleeping on a bed of fallen leaves... Ahaha!

Now that Arianna mentions it, it does seem as though the pile of leaves could be used as a bed. You try putting your hand into it, and find that the fallen leaves are soft and warm... You may lie down on this bed of fallen leaves or go on your way.

Let's take a rest.

Since the area is not large, you take turns standing guard and dive into the pile of leaves, one by one.

Okay, your turn next, Knight!

As you eagerly anticipate your turn on the bed of leaves, Flavio calls out the signal to you. At last, your turn has come, and you dive enthusiastically into the pile of fallen leaves! However...!

Sir Knigh!? What's the matter?

Your eyes well up with tears over a sharp, stabbing pain in your hand as you dig through the leaves. It is only then that you discover the nuts with vicious thorns on them littered throughout the pile.

I blame the squirrel. :argh:

Huh!? I-I didn't notice those when it was my turn...

Well, don't feel down about it.

Their kindness stings even more now... You wonder what other hidden dangers may be waiting beneath the leaves. You decide against resting here any further and return to exploring.

Chloe's statement is a hint on how you could have avoided that bad outcome. Our party's total LUC has to surpass a certain threshold, or Knight gets an injury. If they had enough LUC, we would have gotten a full heal instead.

This place seems inviting. Oh...? Is something over there?

And it hasn't noticed us yet. Fingers crossed that it never does...

I'll cross mine too.
Sure, it doesn't cost anything. The less we have to fight, the better it is for us.

It does not seem to threaten you at the moment, but you cannot say if or when the monster may change its mind. You make a note to be especially cautious of the monster's position as you travel through the area.

I walk into its line of sight.

It seems to be aware of our presence... But we're safe at this distance, no?
We should back away a bit, just in case, and see what--
Whoa!

No sooner do you move away than a gout of flame, seemingly far too large for its size, spews from the monster's mouth! The flames hang in the air at the spot where you stood only a moment ago.

Yikes. We won't be passing through here for a while...

We could just grit our teeth and go...
Well, sure, we could do that... but I'm warning you, it's going to hurt.

To pass through the lingering flames would surely injure you severely. You fix in your mind the monster's ability to breathe fire at nearby prey as you proceed onward.

We'll explore the rest of the Stratum next time.

I gotta give props to the localization. Chloe, Bertrand and Arianna both look like they could be annoying as gently caress if not for the writing.
Seriously, what is Chloe even doing in her battle pose?

As to Ragnar's question about how do you mine potatoes. Potatoes are commonly underground when harvested, it would stand to reason there's potatoes underground when you're mining the ground below your feet.

I'd argue being annoying would've been not as bad as the EOU story party, where Arthur and Frederica are boring, and Simon is offensively boring.

I agree on Arthur and Simon, but I'd say the Highlander is boring while Ricky is just a tend generic.

It doesn't help that there's about a million questions that the story could address that it doesn't. Like why Ricky was chosen for the experiment instead of a scientist or something.

Update 15: Into Salamander's Nest

Let's start out this update with a bit of cooking.

...Sorry to keep you all waiting. It turned out pretty well.
Ooh...?
...I was doubtful as to what use that would be in cooking, but... I see, that's a daring way to use it.
Sir Apicius was one incredible person. I never imagined one could eat stones...
I was just thinking... Can we use this softening technique in battle!?

Great idea!
Right!?
...Sorry to burst your bubble, but you don't actually eat this stone.

Think, guys.
Knight's right. The stone isn't edible.

Dialogue merges here.

Then why is it there?
When using the stone to heat the dish, the results differ from other methods. For instance, cooking sweet potatoes on hot rocks gives you a better taste than on an open fire, right?
Oh, you're right! I get it now.
And after comparing, I've found that this strange stone makes the food more tender and flavorful than a normal rock. Even Apicius noted that he didn't know the reasoning behind it, though...
That doesn't change the fact we're eating something we know nothing about.
But I guarantee the taste. I'll add this to the menu, so feel free to order it whenever you feel like it.

Self explanatory, and really not worth it. Bravants and Stonards only increase offense and defense by 30%. Several other skills give stronger buffs than that.

...Sorry to keep you all waiting. It turned out pretty well.
Ooh! There's a lot in here! When a soup is full of ingredients, it feels like a luxury.
A pile of food. I'm happy.

Let's pile more on.
Pile more on... That has a nice ring to it. Those were words we never could say back at the orphanage.
...Let me warn you that if you pile on any more I'll have to raise the price.
Ack, that's not good!
There's plenty enough on here, so just make due with it. You young'uns are so full of energy, it makes me jealous.
But, still... There's so much, yet I can eat it like nothing.

This is a bit much...
Knight, don't eat much?
I agree... With this much in front of me, I feel overwhelmed.
Arianna, too...!? I don't understand.
Your stomach's too peppy. But still, this soup...
Kid, Knight. There's no need to fret. Even I can finish this.

Dialogue merges here.

Oh... You're right. It is a gentle taste.
I stewed a lot of ingredients that warm you up, so it's even better on cold days. I'll add this to the menu, so feel free to order it whenever you feel like it.

Useless. I have no idea what purpose the imbue foods are supposed to serve.

I leave and then come back to Cafe.

After unlocking enough dishes, you'll witness a scene from Regina's little subplot about her restaurant. Far better than how EOU handled its scenes with the Guild House caretakers, where you pretty much just had to do busywork to grind up relationship points with them. Anyways, they're pretty abridged in Classic, but there's a lot more to them in Story.

Something wrong, Flavio? Why're you looking around the place like that?
Uh, well... we've gotten more dishes on the menu, and more customers have been coming in... but the place still feels so dead.
Now that you mention it... There aren't many customers that stay and relax.
That is a shame indeed! The cafe is such a nice place. I wonder why they leave so soon?
What's the problem with that? It's a cafe. People eat, and they leave. It's not a place for freeloaders to loiter and take up space.
Could be that the people leave early because you act that way to them.

Try to relax a bit.
Yeah, what he said. There's no point stressing yourself out over the stuff you can't control in life, huh?
...That attitude is exactly why you never
get any better.

It's good to be so dedicated.
Dammit, you're one of those stiffs too...?
I think you have no idea how to take something seriously.

Dialogue merges here.

I have a goal that I have to achieve. I can't relax until I've accomplished it.
A goal...?
Haha, you think maybe there's some deep, dark secret behind all this? The Minister's granddaughter, trading status for cooking!
Oh my! I've... heard of this situation before. It was the central concept of a romance novel!

...Uh, kid... what exactly do you usually read?

That's what I would like to know as well. :stare:

......
I suppose even to you, the thought of the Minister's granddaughter becoming a chef is strange?

Well, you're not obligated to work.
It's as you say. I've been given my own plot of land. I don't have any actual financial need to come work in the city.
Y-Your own land...!? I guess being the Minister's granddaughter really counts for something!
...It's all because of Grandpa's name. I didn't earn any of it.

There's nothing strange about it.
Thanks. I appreciate that...
But I know not many people are going to see it from my viewpoint. Like your friends, for example.
Well, uh... yeah, kind of...
Don't worry about it. I already know most people aren't going to understand me.
......

Dialogue merges here.

Sorry. There's no big melodramatic story on why I'm trying to become a chef. like it if Grandpa and the rest of my family could see that, and respect it.
...Respect it?
Yes. If things just stay as they are... I'll be married off to someone who'll benefit the family, given away like some kind of prize.
The reason I agreed to be in charge of this place was so I could prove my worth to the family. If I can recreate the lost recipes of Apicius, and contribute to town development, they'll have no choice but to admit my skills.
You don't want to get married, Regina...? That's why you work at this store?
There's more to it than that, but sure. That's good enough for now. Anyways... that's why I need your help. We've finished a good number of Apicius's recipes, but it's only basics so far. I'd like you to keep looking for new recipes.

I get the feeling that the customers leave quickly because of Regina's, uh... attitude.

Yeah, I wouldn't stay too long.
Yeah, I know... Regina just straight up glares at customers who stay after finishing their meal.
Even if the food's great... I kinda doubt people would want to come back after that.

The food's great though.
Well, yeah, the food is good. I mean, that's probably the only reason she's still getting customers...
But shoving a menu in their face without a word, or putting down the plate without even a smile... doesn't really help. Even if the food's great... I kinda doubt people would want to come back after that.

Dialogue merges here.

I do not envy the situation that Dame Regina has been put in...
But it's somewhat saddening to know that her purpose for cooking is to just prove a point. A meal should be a much more happy occasion...

That's right.
Yes, I love eating together with all of you, whether in the Labyrinth or at the bar.
I'm guessing that Regina doesn't really buy into that kind of stuff though.
Her cooking's just a tool so she can prove her own worth... or something like that, anyway.

That's just how Regina thinks.
I suppose... Dame Regina feels no joy when eating, then...
Yeah. To her, cooking's just a tool she can use to prove her own worth.

Dialogue merges here.

A tool...
Hm... This is all making me uneasy. I know that the Minister's counting on us and all, but can we really make that cafe succeed?

It's up to Guild.
Yeah. I s'pose we were the ones that accepted this job in the first place. Looks like we just have try our best!
Yes. We became quite good friends with Dame Regina, so we must do everything we can to help!
I'll do my best so that I can continue to eat delicious food.
... *sigh* This job is such a pain.

I dunno.
Oh, come on! Well, yeah, the situation doesn't look good... but we accepted this job, so we should at least see it through!
The job we accepted was to get ingredients for Apicius's recipes. Whether or not that cafe succeeds is none of our business.
But... we have become good friends with Dame Regina... so I would like to help her if I can...
I agree with Arianna. We need to work hard so that I can keep eating all that tasty food.
Uh, Chloe. Kinda missing the point here...
If the food is good, more people will come. I miss no points.
Yes, you are exactly right!
... *sigh* It's not just Regina. You two are a huge pain in the neck to deal with, too...

After witnessing a restaurant scene, the townsfolk will have new stuff to say. Hanna has no new dialogue for Story, but the Classic playthrough did miss Quona's.

She was having an argument with a man at the market... It was someone from the Grand Duchy, but she wasn't afraid at all... I got scared... I couldn't say anything to her... She's a very brave person. ...It must feel good to speak your mind like that... ...But she looked a little... lonely. M-Maybe I was just imagining it, though...

The thing I hear the most is... usually something like, “I never expected that would actually be edible!” Th-That's actually a little scary.

The rest of the townsfolks' dialogue is the same as in Classic. Except for Dubois.

Regina is quite a hard worker, but she tends to lose perspective at times. She needs to see the bigger picture. Oho ho ho ho! Of course, that part of her can be rather adorable.
*giggle* Minister Dubois must truly care for Lady Regina.
...Uh huh. He's a doting grandparent if I've ever seen one.

Anyways, back to the Labyrinth.

They seem aware of your presence, and one of them, the tall man, steps forth as if to protect the tanned woman.

Well, let's introduce ourselves first.

I'm Knight.
I have no interest in individuals. State the name of your guild.

You tell the black-clad man that you belong to the Guild Guild.

I've heard the name. You are the guild who saved Beowulf, then. ...What rubbish.

The black-clad man narrows his eyes at you before speaking--almost spitting--his continued thoughts.

The standards for explorers have fallen hard. To think a guild like yours could tread these halls...

Oh he did not just say that.

Care to test our skills?

The black-clad man responds to your taunt with a fierce smirk.

Oh? So... you at least have an explorer's pride. Very amusing, when you have no notion of your own weaknesses. Such a sorry sight... You and your guild peopled with rubbish.
Why, you--! What is it you want? If you've come for a fight, we'll gladly supply one!
Sir Flavio!
Sorry, but I'm not backing down. This creep didn't just insult Guild... He insulted all of us in it!

Oh I am so up for a throw down!

You see no reason to cower before the black-clad's man sharp tongue. You draw your own weapon and face him!

You too, Sir Knight...!?

A sense of menace fills the air between you and the elderly man... Any sudden movement and a battle could break out... and though he remains still, you can sense his immense strength! You are aware that you are at a disadvantage, yet you strengthen your resolve nonetheless...

With an odd cheer in her voice, the black-clad woman steps between you. Though she had allowed the tall man to stand guard over her prior to now, she turns a stern gaze at him.

That's enough, Wilhelm. You're being very rude.
But milady...
Lower the guns, Wilhelm. I'm only going to tell you once.
...Yes, milady.

Though her tone is cheerful, she is firm with the man before turning to give you a friendly smile.

I'm sorry. My guard is overstepping his bounds. I apologize for his behavior.
......
We've had a number of troubles lately with reckless young explorers. It's all made Wilhelm a bit high-strung.
No need to worry, then. We just have some business on the 8th floor. I doubt we'll get in your way.
On the 8th floor? Are you the ones out to find the Salamander's feather?
Oh? How do you know about that? The Minister said that the Salamander's existence was a closely guarded secret...
How, you ask? It's simple: we were the ones who told the Grand Duchy where the Salamander's nest was.

You do recall hearing that the Grand Duchy obtained that information from a reliable source... Who could these two be? You put that question to the black-clad woman.

...We didn't introduce ourselves, did we? Honestly, Wilhelm can be so unmannerly.

You have indeed heard the name before. They are widely known in High Lagaard as one of the most skilled guilds. Now knowing this, you begin to see why the pair before you has such a dignified air about them...

Once you get the feather from the 8th floor, head straight back to town. I wouldn't go much further if I were you. Good luck with your work for the Grand Duchy.

With this cheerful farewell, the black-clad woman ascends the stairs, with the tall man following close behind.

Esbat leaves.

Once they are well and truly gone, Chloe peeks her head out from behind Bertrand and mutters quietly.

They were scary. I'm not sure why.
Yeah... they did seem pretty intimidating.

You are all disquieted by the implied warning in the Esbat woman's words as you return to your investigation...

Well, let's go up to the 8th floor now.

Arianna checks your surroundings against the map as she hems and haws. She appears to be correct; if your map is to be believed, this must be the Salamander's dwelling place.

This place seems even more dangerous than they told us...

Could it be due to the legendary fire beast's presence? You swallow at the intense heat of the air here... And for another reason as well: the dread presence lurking beyond this point is all too evident, even from here. Seeing that your guildmates have also stopped, you address them.

I'm pretty sure we can easily kill it.

Let's defeat the Salamander!
Wh--You're serious!? Didn't the Minister specifically tell us not to fight it?
Well, if you're sure, we'll obey our leader's orders.
But I'd rather not become fertilizer for the trees.
Don't say things like that, old man!
Knight... If you're really going to do this, I'll help, but we should run at the first sign of trouble. Okay?

As you nod your agreement to his proviso, Flavio recalls something and continues.

Didn't we get a note from the Grand Duchy on where to find the feather? What did it say?

You fish the note out from your belongings and confirm its location on the map with Arianna.

Let's see... if what's written here is accurate, I believe it's pointing to this area.

Let's start looking.

Newly united in purpose, your guild moves to carry out the mission.

You are clearly within its sights, as it is glaring directly at you! Just feeling its terrifying presence is enough to make the sweat roll down your back...

Just like the Minister said... that thing is a cut above the rest of the Labyrinth's monsters.
True enough. If we don't concentrate on avoiding it as we go through here, we could all pay the price.

As you observe and comment upon the Salamander, its murderous gaze grows even stronger!

I'm... growing uneasy at the way it's looking at us...

Get back!

Wh-What the hell!? The whole area's gone up in flames!
...Amazing.
It really is... Wait, this is no time to stand around admiring it!
That flame'll do a number on us. It'll be best to try and keep out of it as we go through here...

I'm sure we can take it.

Maybe we should just defeat it.
That would certainly be a simpler way... But I am anxious to confront it...

If you are certain of what must be done even despite Arianna's concerns, you are free to put your plan into action.

Okay I know I said that we should kill Salamander and all that, but you really don't want to get into a fight with it. Trust me.

And in case you're wondering, no, there isn't a crazy cheese method like wearing nothing but belts that will enable you to take it down now. Salmander is strictly a post-game boss. Don't bother with it until then.

It seems strangely exhausted. What could be the matter with it...?

It clearly hasn't snacked in a while.

Maybe it's gotten hungry?
No way! That's too much of a coincidence to believe! Wouldn't it make more sense for it to be tired from all that firebreathing?
Yeah, that makes sense. Either way, this is our best chance. That Salamander's going to be out of commission for a while, I suspect.
Let's get the plume. Now.
Alright! Then let's get to it!

Having finished analyzing the situation, you spring into action to retrieve the feather and complete the mission.

It's full of energy again.
Ugh... Does that mean it's ready to breathe some more fire?
It's back to business, so I assume so. *sigh* What a hassle...

I wonder if it'll get tired again...
It rested after breathing a certain amount of fire previously, no? Perhaps it may do so again if we can coax it into breathing fire a certain number of times?
Yeah... that's certainly worth a try.
So let's go.

Salamander's fire breath will push you all the way back and deal a heavy amount of damage. Yeah, don't get hit by it.

Heh, looks like we were right. That thing tires itself out with all the fire it breathes.
Basically. Now's our chance.
Sir Knight, let us make haste and find the feather!

......As you brush aside the grass, you find something giving off an odd gleam within. It is not the light catching the grass... The hard gleam catches your eye, and you dig deeper. Your efforts are rewarded with the discovery of a strange feather glinting with the colors of the rainbow!

Mission accomplished.

You call out to your comrades that you have found what the party seeks.

What unusual colors... See how they shift as the light hits it!
Interesting. ...I want it.
We're turning it in for information. Cough it up.
......
That wraps it up. Let's hurry back and give this to the Minister!

You decide to return to town for the time being to deliver the Fire Plume to the Minister at the Grand Duchy.

We have the feather, so let's hurry back and get it to the chief of protocol.

Having accomplished your goal here in the Labyrinth, you now need to return to the Grand Duchy to report your results.

Okay, fine. Let's go back to town.

Oh, come now, loves! There's nobody in this city who wouldn't know about an elite guild like Esbat! If a guild that famous would come stay at my inn... ooh, loves, I can't tell you how flattered I'd be! ...But I suppose it would be a little unnerving for people that famous to come stay at our humble little place. Bahaha!

All the townsfolk have some new dialogue after your meeting with Esbat. Then they switch over to their floor 8 dialogue. Hanna's is the same as in Classic.

...Oh, I think I've heard of them... They're really strong explorers, right...? ...Oh, but y-you're all really strong too... That's what our customers say... They all say that Guild is a really amazing guild... a and that makes me happy... Hee hee...

After that roasting, I could use a nap.

As you sit there, you hear a knock at your door. Who could it be at this hour...?

It's Flavio's turn now.

No.

I thought maybe they got mixed up with your things...

Feel free to look.
Thanks...

Get off of there.

Quit sleeping in someone else's bed.

And I'm usually fine as long as we're out exploring, but the moment I get back here, I just suddenly feel so wiped... It's just so different here compared to the Library. Maybe that's why I get so tired...

I thought I'd get used to things here, but it's way colder than the Library. And the food's so bland, don't you think?
I already miss the fried pie they sold at the student union...

You're too weak-minded.
*sigh* How's a strong will supposed to help me stand this cold...?
We grew up in the same place. We went through the same training. So how can we be so... different?

What do you mean?
There's no deep meaning to it, I'm just saying you're stronger than me.
*sigh*... Why am I always like this...?

Hey, get off of there.

Oh, have you all heard about Esbat? People say they're one of the strongest guilds in all of High Lagaard. They sometimes visit our shop... and they just look so... cool. I don't think I've ever met anyone who was just that... that cool!

She has new dialogue in Story if we talk to her again.

Stand over here for a second, I'll fix that for you. A stitch here, and there... There! All done!
Wow...! Good as new.
Hey, you're not half bad at that stuff. Guess I should have expected as much from the scion of Sitoth Trading, huh?
S-Scion!? Y-You're exaggerating too much! I'm just good at mending clothes... That's all, really!

That's pretty amazing.
E-Ehehehe... Hearing that makes me really happy!

...Could you teach me?
Huh!? M-Me!? Teach you? Th-This is kind of embarrassing, but... Y-Yes I'd be glad to teach you!

You'd make a perfect housewife.
A-A wife...!? I-I'm too young for that! B-Besides, this really isn't a big deal...
Nuh-uh. You're really good at this. You should be more proud of yourself.
Y-You really think so...? Eheheh...

Uh, yes. I do know... or at least, I've heard of it before... I think. It's a... spice, right? A dash of Esbat...? No? Maybe not, then. Sorry. I can't seem to remember things that I'm not really interested in...

The Smallish woman is back in Story mode.

Oh dear, what am I going to do...?
Hmm? What's wrong, lady? Looks like you're having some trouble.
Well, I want to ask for work here. But I'm afraid it's so rowdy around here, I simply don't know what to do...
Oh, no problem. For jobs, you go to that counter over there. See, with the board near it?
Over there... the counter where that bearded ruffian is standing...?
Hah! Yeah, he might look rough around the edges, but he's not the kind of guy to take advantage of people in need.
But if you're really not comfortable going by yourself, I'll go with you! Here, give me your hand. We'll ask him.
Oh my... Oh, dear me... Why, thank you, young man...
Sir Flavio... Your kindness is truly an inspiration! We must follow his example.
Sheesh. How's he so nice all the time...? I can barely show my face here...

Let's see what Cass has to say.

Hm? Oh, yeh're familiar with 'em already. Well, guess they are pretty famous. They're one of the best in the land, and ruthless to boot. Plus, they always see right through when I try to cheat their reward... Huh? Oh, yer rewards...? 'Course I don't cheat yer rewards! Yep. Thought never crossed my mind. I'm right offended. What's with all the questions?

The two of them can come off as a little aggressive. Also... ...No, nevermind. It's not my place to say. What's important is that you accomplish your goals. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Try to avoid any unnecessary risks.

She has more dialogue if we talk to her again.

Pretty impressive, huh?
Haha, you seem quite relaxed. Perhaps your exploration is coming so easily thanks to that calm outlook. I'd heard you accepted a mission to obtain a fire plume, but it looks like I won't have to worry about you. However... the monster is very powerful. Your mission is important, but it's even more important that you come back alive. There's no shame in retreating if things look grim. As long as you keep yourself alive, you'll have a second chance. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Try to avoid any unnecessary risks.

What's that supposed to mean!?
Hmhm... Seems I've taken the joke a bit too far. You seemed somewhat on edge, so I was trying to loosen you up a bit. I heard you accepted a mission to obtain a fire plume. The monster is extremely powerful... Be careful. Your mission is indeed important, but it's even more important that you come back alive. Understand? There's no shame in retreating if things look grim. As long as you keep yourself alive, you'll have a second chance. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Try to avoid any unnecessary risks.

...And yet, even explorers of their caliber are unable to reach the floating castle. The Labyrinth is perilous indeed... I know the ritual is your objective, but you explore the Labyrinth a great deal, so please--be careful.

And he has more stuff to say if we talk to him a 2nd time.

High Lagaard is a bit remote... It must have been quite a journey just to arrive here. Hm. I was merely thinking of possible measures to attract more foreign explorers... Road maintenance, arranging lodgings, ensuring we can provide for more visitors... There is much to be done. If there is anything you can think of that might help, please let us know. I understand that there is much that you have to do already, but I would appreciate your advice in the matter, hm? Ah, I've kept you too long again. I look forward to your safe return.

Well, let's turn in that feather.

It seems the worries I harbored prior to making the request were groundless. As a reward for your excellent service to the Grand Duchy, I present you with this.

Money is always nice.

But so is the exp.

Hmm, I wonder if I'm underleveled if I got enough exp for 2 level ups.

I shall deliver this feather to the chief of protocol and see what else he might know.

Dubois leaves.

I do hope this gains us some sort of lead...

I have my doubts.

This may not work...
What's this!? Do you have some ill premonition about this, Sir Knight?
C'mon, Knight. Try not to scare Arianna like that.
Don't joke, Knight. Or you'll grow into a lousy adult like Trand.
Uh, Chloe, isn't that a little harsh?

And I have here the records that were passed down through generations of the protocol department!
Is this true!? Then there are indeed records relating past instances of the ritual?
Mm... According to this, there was a woman named Violetta, the Martial Princess of Caledonia, a hundred years ago.
......
The records show that Martial Princess Violetta came to High Lagaard with a knight before journeying to Ginnungagap. The chief of protocol at that time took an interest in the ritual and requested to accompany her, which she declined. But the chief's curiosity was insatiable, and he secretly looked into the pair's movements, recording what he found.

No wonder she declined the request.
Indeed... Well, I ask that you pardon their intellectual curiosity, and pay attention to the rest of the records. The chief of protocol wrote that the pair returned from investigating Ginnungagap and then entered the Yggdrasil Labyrinth. They discovered the chief following them, and the resulting exchange is recorded here as well. “For the sake of the ritual passed down in Caledonia, we must hunt the evil lurking in the forest.” Soon afterwards, the chief heard that the Flame Demon dwelling in the forest's second Stratum was slain.
A Flame Demon?
I believe I've heard of it. I have a terrible feeling that this “Flame Demon” dwelling in the second Stratum...
Yes. It is a dreadful monster that has hindered the passage of explorers for nigh on a century. No matter how many times it is slain, it returns to life over time. We call it the Flame Demon.

This is referring to the fact that Stratum bosses can respawn.

......
I must insist that you accept the next mission before I go into more detail.

Let's get on with the plot.

Its den is in the hall directly before the stairs that lead upward. The fiend is a threat to all explorers. According to the chief of protocol's records, that Demon is what the pair who previously undertook the ritual slayed. It was at that time, a hundred years ago, that the Martial Princess disappeared. Thus, my humble opinion is that the answers to your questions lie there. Please do take the utmost care when venturing out to face the Flame Demon.

Is something the matter, Sir Flavio? You seem lost in thought.
I was just wondering... how can a monster live for hundreds of years?
I noticed that too. It's not just Ginnungagap. There's a lot of mysteries in the Yggdrasil Labyrinth.
Very true. I do wonder what relation this monster might have to our ritual...
And then there's whatever's going on with Knight... ......

We'll find out soon enough.
Yeah, killing the Flame Demon will be the fastest way to get some answers. We've just gotta get to the 10th floor first. Once that's taken care of, up next is a trip to Ginnungagap. If we keep pushing forward, I'm sure we'll figure stuff out along the way.
...Yeah, I guess so. Once the ritual is wrapped up... there'll be no problems.
I can't wait to see the ritual. Can we hurry to the 10th floor?

Komi-san won.

Fafnir is a class entirely new to EO2U that has something of a unique design, gameplay-wise. Fafnir is designed around the Force system, and the Force system in EO2U is, arguably, designed around Fafnir. Without Fafnir's Force Boost, Transform, he's one of the weakest classes in the game: low damage, low survivability, bad TP pool (although that applies to Transform as well), low speed, and susceptible to being disabled.

During Transform, Fafnir is an entirely different story. With a lot of skill points and after a certain point in Story mode, Fafnir becomes, bar none, the single best damage class in the entire game. Barely anyone can keep up with him with regards to damage, not just because of Transform's innate damage boost, but because the skills that are available only during Transform have such ludicrous damage even without the damage boost. Transformed Fafnir also excels because of the fact that he relies almost solely on elemental damage, which is incredibly strong in EO2U.

Part of why Fafnir is so strong is attributable to the fact that he's the only class exclusive to Story mode--you can't just create a new Fafnir in Classic without having beaten the game already, and using New Game+ on a Story file. In the Story party, Fafnir has to be strong, due to the Story party's default composition of 4 supports, one of which can conditionally deal good damage, while the other two can kind of contribute damage, but still not a lot. Fafnir in Classic mode, by extension, is kind of ridiculous, since you can put him in a more balanced party and, most importantly, pair him up with a Troubadour. I only need say this about how strong that duo is: Ranger and Milly, combined, were able to basically dual-handedly take down Basilisk in 4 turns, and Scylla, who has a massive HP pool and is a marathon of a fight in Story mode, in 5 turns.

VIT: 28
AGI: 20
LUC: 21

Level 99
HP: 516
TP: 341
STR: 66
TEC: 61
VIT: 56
AGI: 38
LUC: 40

Innate weapon choices: Sword, Katana

Innate armor choices: Light armor, Clothes

Common passives: HP Up, TP Up, Phys ATK Up, Elem ATK Up, Mine

As mentioned above, Fafnir has absolutely terrible AGI and LUC, meaning he's slow as gently caress and is really susceptible to being hit with ailments and binds, mediocre VIT, meaning he can't take too many hits but won't die to a stiff breeze, and good STR and TEC. He's also fairly unique in that he can equip both swords and katanas--I usually stick with katanas since they provide bigger ATK boosts than swords.

It's worth noting that Fafnir cannot reclass into another class, nor can he be reclassed into.

Blade Mastery
Requirements: None

Required to learn Fafnir attack skills. Passively increases damage dealt with swords and katanas. If the user knows some combination of Blade Mastery, Sword Mastery, and Katana Mastery, whichever passive gives the larget bonus is applied.

Sonic Raid
Requirements: Blade Mastery level 1
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

Deals melee STR-based Cut damage to one enemy at the start of the turn. Has +10 base accuracy at all levels.

A very basic skill, aside from the fact that it goes first in the turn order. It's very possible to have a few instances where an enemy is at really low HP and you just want to kill them very quickly, in which case Sonic Raid is useful. I wouldn't invest more than one point into it, though, especially given that Fafnir is incredibly skill point hungry.

Gale Rush
Requirements: Sonic Raid level 5
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

Deals 2-3 instances of melee STR-based Cut damage to one enemy. Has a 200% speed modifier at all levels.

Gale Rush is basically Fafnir's most consistent skill damage-wise outside of Transform, and that is both its blessing and its curse. While it's theoretically useful in the midgame, where Fafnir will be spending a lot of time untransformed, in the lategame it falls off significantly due to the fact that you'll most likely have several Force Mastery skills, plus Axcelas and potentially other party members who can manipulate Force. I'd personally advise ignoring Gale Rush.

Flame/Freeze/Shock Sabre
Requirements: Blade Mastery level 3
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

Deals melee STR-based Cut+Fire/Ice/Volt damage to one enemy. Has a 90% speed modifier and +10 base accuracy at all levels.

Fafnir's bread-and-butter skills. While the Sabres themselves suck a lot, they also simultaneously need to be maxed out at least eventually, since their levels are what the Waves are based off of.

Delayed Chase
Requirements: Blade Mastery level 5
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

On the turn after use, if the user uses a skill that deals elemental damage, also adds a melee STR-based Cut+Element attack to all enemies hit with an element. The added hit has +50 base accuracy.

One of Fafnir's better early and midgame skills. The damage starts to peak off as the game goes on, but in the aformentioned early and midgame, the amount of damage Fafnir gets from Delayed Chase relative to how much TP it costs is very nice. You'll still want to keep it leveled up and eventually maxed out once the late and postgame hit, though, since Blade Recoil depends on Delayed Chase's level.

Overkiller
Requirements: Blade Mastery level 7
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

Deals melee STR-based Cut damage to one enemy. If the initial target is killed by Overkiller, deals the same amount of damage to all enemies. Has a 90% speed modifier and +10 base accuracy at all levels.

A really weird and situational skill with absolutely terrible damage for how much TP it costs. Skip it.

Resonance
Requirements: Blade Mastery level 10
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

Deals melee STR-based Cut damage to one enemy. Damage is reduced based on the number of turns that have passed since Resonance was last used: 75% reduction for 1 turn, 50% reduction for 2 turns, 25% reduction for 3 turns, and Resonance returns to full damage 4 turns after the last used. If Resonance is used multiple times in the same turn (Double Action, Action Boost, Accelerate), its damage is not reduced for that turn. Has +15 base accuracy at all levels.

Resonance's consecutive use penalty sucks, but it's also, at the same time, Fafnir's best damage option when untransformed. It's something you'll want once you have the Sabres and Delayed Chase up to good levels.

Full Slash
Requirements: Resonance level 3
Required equipment: Sword or Katana
Body parts used: Arms

Deals melee STR-based Cut damage to one enemy. The damage is multiplied by the target's current percent HP--it deals full damage if the enemy is at 100% HP, half damage if it's at 50% HP, etc. Has a 50% speed modifier and +10 base accuracy at all levels.

Another strange gimmick skill that's not worth investing in. It just gets worse and worse as fights goes on.

Force Mastery
Requirements: None

Required to learn Force skills. Passively increases the user's Force gain from non-fixed sources.

Once you have the Sabres and Delayed Chase up to levels you're comfortable with, immediately start investing in Force Mastery. Not only are a bunch of the skills it unlocks very useful, the passive bonus itself is also great.

Vital/Mind Shut
Requirements: Force Mastery level 1
Body parts used: Head

Reduces one enemy's physical/elemental defense. Attempts to bind the target's arms/head. Has an 80% speed modifier at all levels.

Mediocre debuffs. While the base bind chance on each of them is actually decently high, Fafnir has really terrible LUC, so good luck getting them to actually stick.

Absorb
Requirements: Force Mastery level 3
Body parts used: None

Cures the user of binds (and ailments from level 5 on). Restores Force if any disables were purged--this amount is static, and is not modified by the number of disables removed. Has an 80% speed modifier at all levels.

One of the better skills in the Force Mastery tree. Fafnir being able to cure himself of binds and ailments is already useful enough, and the Force restore is just icing on the cake. It doesn't take a lot of skill points to max out, either.

Force Charge
Requirements: Absorb level 5
Body parts used: Head

Until the end of the next turn, increases the damage the user deals and the amount of Force they gain.

I'm normally down on charge skills (for good reason), but Force Charge has two things about it that make it less terrible. One, it's an option if you need Force very quickly and don't have Axcelas or a Sovereign on hand. Two, the damage boost lasting until the end of the turn means it works with Accelerate.

Force Shield
Requirements: Force Mastery level 5
Body parts used: Head

Only usable while the user is in the Force Boost state. Extends the Force Boost duration by 1, and reduces all damage to the user for one turn. Costs 14 TP at all levels.

Force Shield is a really strange skill. I guess if you really want to turn Fafnir into a tank in combination with Scapegoat it could be useful, but otherwise...

Force Energy
Requirements Force Shield level 5

When the user is in the Force Boost state, restores a static amount of TP plus a percentage of their max TP at the end of a turn.

Force Energy is a nice way to mitigate the fact that Fafnir has an absurdly terrible TP pool. Not a lot else to say about it.

Force Reset
Requirements: Force Mastery level 10
Body parts used: Head

Only usable while the user is in the Force Boost state. Ends the Force Boost, and restores Force to the user.

Force Reset is a way to increase the amount of uptime on Transform. Just use it on the last turn of Transform, and bam, you already have quite a lot of Force back. The standard way to use it is, essentially:

First two turns -> Extend -> Accelerate -> Accelerate turn -> Force Reset

Limit Break
Requirements: Force Reset level 5

In battle, the user's Force gauge can go beyond 100. After the end of the battle, the user's max Force (and their current Force if it was above 100 at the end of the battle) is set back to 100.

Limit Break's primary use is that you can combine it with Axcelas and other Force-restoring skills to, at level 20, enable Fafnir to Transform once, use up the duration, and then immediately Transform again. It's not something you'll really be able to take advantage of until the postgame, really, but it's still, nevertheless, fun to just immediately use Transform after it ends.

Weapon Free
Requirements: Phys ATK Up level 3, Elem ATK Up level 3

Allows the use of any attack skill, even if the user doesn't have the correct weapon equipped. However, from levels 1-19, any skill the user doesn't have the right weapon for will have its damage reduced.

Weapon Free's primary use is, at level 20, allowing Fafnir to equip staves, which give TEC bonuses, without suffering a penalty to the rest of his damage. Other than that, meh.

Transform
Force Boost

Increases the user's damage by 50% and maximum HP by 100%--heals the user up to their new maximum, as well. Reduces the user's speed by 50%. Enables the use of Fire/Ice/Thunder Wave, Blade Recoil, Meteor Smash, Power Cell, Extend, Self-Regenerate, and Accelerate.

And now, we finally reach the big draw of the Fafnir class, and the reason it is so supremely powerful once Fafnir has a lot of skill points available. Transform's passive bonuses (aside from the speed penalty) are already nice, but the skills it unlocks...hoo boy.

Fire/Ice/Thunder Wave
Depends on: Flame/Freeze/Shock Sabre
Body parts used: Head

Deals 10 instances of ranged TEC-based Fire/Ice/Volt damage to random enemies. Can hit the same target multiple times. Has a 70% speed modifier and 150 base accuracy at all levels.

Transform's essentially basic skills, which already deal a fuckton of damage on their own, and reach "jesus christ" levels when the Transform bonus is factored in. If you factor in an enemy having 125% resistance to an element, too, a level 20 Wave would deal 1575% TEC damage, and a 150% resistance would mean 1890%.

Blade Recoil
Depends on: Delayed Chase
Body parts used: Arms

Deals melee STR-based Cut damage to one enemy. If the user used an elemental attack on the last turn, also adds a ranged TEC-based follow-up attack of that same element. The follow-up attack doesn't check for accuracy, and will always hit.

This is why I said you should keep Delayed Chase leveled up, even after its damage gets outpaced. It even deals more total damage than the Waves!

Meteor Smash
Given: After defeating Chimaera
Body parts used: Arms

Usable once per Transform. Deals melee STR-based Bash damage to one enemy. Damage scales linearly from 350% to 795% based on user level. Costs 3 TP, has an 80% speed modifier, and 200 base accuracy.

Meteor Smash is useful before Fafnir gets enough skill points to really be effective, but after that, it's kind of just...there.

Power Cell
Given: After defeating Basilisk

Once per Transform, when the user takes mortal damage, they will survive at 1 HP.

A guaranteed Aegis/Deadly Resolve effect. Sure, why not?

Extend
Given: After defeating Flame Demon
Body parts used: Head

Usable once per Transform. Resets Transform's duration to 3 turns. Costs 5 TP.

Extend allows you to get more from the Force you spent to enable Transform and it is, by that virtue, good.

Self-Regenerate
Given: After defeating Arachne

Restores 20% of the user's max HP at the end of each turn during Transform.

A neat passive. Kind of useless since Fafnir already has a metric ton of HP during Transform, but oh well.

Accelerate
Given: After defeating Scylla
Body parts used: Head

Usable once per Transform. On the next turn, allows the user to perform three separate actions. These three actions will go first in the turn order. Costs 15 TP.

One of the biggest, if not THE biggest, reasons that Fafnir is supremely broken, for reasons I really shouldn't have to state.

Ignition Ray/Akashic Nova
Force Break
Body parts used: Head

Deals ranged TEC-based Fire+Ice+Volt damage to one enemy/all enemies. Damage scales linearly from 1000% to 2100% based on user level. Has a 50% speed modifier. Ignition Ray is changed to Akashic Nova at the start of the Demi-Fafnir fight.

Even a unique damage type and pretty big nuke damage can't save Fafnir's Force Breaks from the fact that they're really boring compared to the rest of Transform's toolkit, and there's also the fact that, oh yeah, they lock Fafnir out of Transform for the rest of the battle. Best used to either get really annoying elemental conditionals (ie. get a kill with Fire damage on an enemy that has 0% Fire resistance), or as finishers (when you're positively sure they'll kill something).

It is kind of interesting to see a class so heavily themed around using Force. ...and I guess Grimoires too, to proc various self-chaser effects?

Is it just me, or does Story Mode Fafnir have a lot more idiotic dialogue choices than EOU Story Mode Highlander?

Yeah, he has a personality. A sometimes kooky, weird, and stupid personality, but one nonetheless.

Highlander's options were "Generic anime hero answer" and "Out of character rear end in a top hat answer that no one will ever hold against him".

Compared to that, Fafnir is a breath of fresh air.

Huh. I vague remember a few "Sarcastic quip" lines.

And all I'm saying is that Fafnir = Occasionally Weird and Quirky.

My disdain for you all knows no bounds.
Update 16: Through Flame Demon's Domain

Beyond the low grass is a mountain of beautifully ripe, red fruits!

Ah...! So many small fruits! They look simply scrumptious.
I know these. They're edible.

You know from having seen these berries at the market that Chloe is right. If you wish, you may take advantage of this good fortune and enjoy the sweetly tart berries.

The game pretty much told us they're safe to eat, so we may as well

Lured by the sweet scent, you pick and eat all the berries you can hold. You smack your lips at the perfect balance of sweet and sour that floods across your tongue.

Ooh, these are good.
I want more.
Dame Chloe, you'll sully your clothes if you stuff so many in your mouth.
Who could tell? They're black to begin with. Just leave her be.
But that wasn't my issue...

You are half concerned that monsters may strike while you are engrossed in eating the berries, but none do. You spend a peaceful moment here...

Whew, we ate quite a lot... good thing there's tons more here that aren't ripe.
Can we eat all we want again?
Yeah, but probably another day.

You return to exploring alongside the blank-faced yet oddly cheerful-seeming girl.

Another daily event. Oh and here's an audio only conversation we can hear in the 2nd Stratum. It's the only one that plays in this Stratum, oddly enough, when all the other Strata have at least 2 audio conversations.

Are we having a short rest? I anticipated this might happen. Look!
Are these playing cards? Tarot cards, too.
Yes! They're perfect for passing the time.
You're far too into this. Put those away.

That could be a problem in such a tight space. Could we squeeze by it somehow?
I hate getting hurt... almost as much as I hate having to figure this stuff out.
How about it? What if we just charged right in there?

I like his style of thinking. Sometimes I don't bother with the FOE puzzles and just kill the FOE itself.

Let's force our way through.
Ooh, great minds and so forth. Sometimes the best way forward is straight through.
We don't know if we can beat it. But we won't know unless we try.

With that discussion settled, you prepare yourself to challenge the monster.

Of course actually trying to fight the thing now would result in a game over.

This room's bigger, so it seems like it'd be easier to dodge it in here... but the floor seems pretty dangerous.
Yes, it's a thorny problem. I don't advise that we sit anywhere in this place...
Uh, it's going to be just as bad to try and walk across. What do we do? If there's one thing this old man hates, it's getting hurt.

There's no predicting what the monster may do. You ought to keep an eye on it and your own position as you proceed.

I know! A rare breed FOE! How lucky!

Could these be its friends?
Friends, drinking buddies, whatever. Bottom line is, they're trouble for us.
You have the hang of how they move by now, right, Knight?
Try to make this easy on us. We're counting on you.

Once you have decided on your plan to deal with the multiple monsters, you may begin whenever you are ready.

I slip past them.

And we're done with the 8th floor.

A new floor! You know what this means.

Oh dear, you all look filthy today. Hold on, I'll go get some water heating up for all of you. ...You really do enjoy going into that Labyrinth, don't you? Is it honestly that much fun? You always come back covered in scratches. I don't want you to end up covered in scars, now! Mm? Oh, I'm not worried about you, Knight. It's Arianna and Chloe I'm fussing over! You boys treat all your scars like badges of honor, but it's just not the same for girls! You'd better do your best to protect them!

Talking to people! And nap time!

As you sit there, you hear a knock at your door. Who could it be at this hour...?

Now it's Arianna's turn.

That's right.

Oh, I see now... This wasn't my room at all.
Then where in the world could it have gone?
I apologize for disturbing you, Sir Knight. I think I'll go and look around for my room a bit more.
If you'll excuse me...

And the scene ends just like that. Okay okay, let's go back a bit. Picking that option or “No, it isn't” ends the scene immediately.

What're you doing, Arianna?

I'm ashamed to say that all these doors look alike to me, which has been a great source of confusion. As I walked around the inn, I became lost, and couldn't tell which room was my own...
Haha, but I was fortunate enough to run into you. Would you mind if I stayed to talk a bit? ......
Explorers must be used to staying here and waking each morning to venture out into the Labyrinth. But it's all so new to me. Eating on the road, camping, fighting deadly monsters... I'm accustomed to none of it. What are your thoughts, Sir Knight?

I love a good fight!
You are quiet brave, Sir Knight.
I don't think all this fighting agrees with me... but I have a duty to perform. I mustn't shrink from it.
Still, I'm relieved to know that you are enjoying our adventure, Sir Knight. I'm very glad to have you accompanying me to complete this ritual. I enjoy traveling with you...
But I worried that you didn't share this sentiment, and that I was inconveniencing you.

It is a little trying.
Wh... I-Is that true!?
Y-You're having me on, right? Would you mind if I ask again...?

But thou must!

I enjoy it too.
I was hoping you would say that judging from what you said earlier. I confess to being relieved to hear your thoughts, Sir Knight. Well... I suppose it is getting late. I think I shall head back to my room now. Good night, Sir Knight.

Alone again in your room, you have only the silence for company. It is late, and you decide to rest in preparation for tomorrow...

Abigail and Regina have nothing new to say, but we can cook some new stuff at Cafe.

...Sorry to keep you waiting. Here you go. It turned out pretty well.
My...! It has quite a strong bite.
Hmmm... So food is stuffed into this fanged vine's mouth?
It's a basket, so even the meat juice won't drip out. Interesting.
This makes me happy. The insides spill out all the time for me.

Good for you.
Yeah. I can now eat all of it. I'm really happy.

I spill a lot, too.
Sandwiches always spill...
But with this sandwich, you and me are happy.

Dialogue merges here.

H-Hmmm... If you put it that way, it's not a bad sandwich... I guess.
But since it looks pretty much exactly as the monster we fight all the time... it's... kinda...
Hmm, it is true that depending on how you look at it, you're eating a sandwich along with the monster, huh?
Er... That's not the positive opinion I meant...

You're being too sensitive.
No one ever told me that while we were back at Midgard...

I understand that...
R-Right? I'm not the crazy one, huh?

Dialogue merges here.

Being able to enjoy the presentation is one of the charms of Apicius's recipes, but... it might not be for everyone. I'll keep tabs on the customers' reactions. This'll go on the menu, so order it whenever you like.

You get one extra material from gathering points. A high level gathering skill, or the Yggdrasil Bud Tea outclasses this heavily.

...Sorry to keep you waiting. Here you go. It turned out pretty well.
Heh, a pot-au-feu. That's nostalgic; I used to eat those all the time...
But isn't that a lot of meat in there?
What are you saying, Trand? The more meat, the better. In fact, these mushrooms should be meat, too.

That's too much.
You're wrong. There's no such thing as too much meat.
Sorry to butt in after you've made your statement, but there is such a thing as too much.
Because there are vegetables, the meat tastes better. That goes the same vice versa.
...Is that true?
That's true.

We don't need veggies.
Exactly.
I'll refute that. Because there are vegetables, the meat tastes better, and vice versa. It's about balance.
...Is that true?
That's true. Don't just hate vegetables for no reason.

Heck, I don't need meat.
...!? Knight, are you insane?
Oh, you prefer vegetables? I thought that most explorers were meat lovers like Chloe... I'll remember that.
But that's the problem, too. The vegetables taste better, because there is meat, and vice versa. It's about balance.
...Is that true?
That's true.

Dialogue merges here.

Hmmm, you really need to think about a lot of stuff when cooking, huh?
I just think it's all good as long as the taste is good.
Well, it is the job of a cook to think.
*giggle* Dame Regina's cooking is always so delicious... We cannot help but let you handle it.
I... I see. Then I'll take care of it.
I'll add this to the menu, so order it again if you like.

Not that useful, since it only restores 10 points of Force for every 10 steps you take. And this has absolutely no effect if you've used Force Breaks. Eat something else.

...Sorry to keep you waiting. Here you go. It turned out pretty well.
My, my... They look so cute. And delicious, as well.
Ooh...! Candied chestnuts! I love the way they look like treasure.
But it leaves the mouth a bit dry. Hey lady, some tea.
I'm not a maid. You have your own legs.
It's a pain to get up.
......

I want some tea, too.
You're the same as this man?
*sigh* It seems the male members of Guild all lack manners.
Wha-- I didn't say anything, yet I was counted together...!?

Get up, Bertrand.
What, I'm beat from all the exploration. Let a man bum around while in town, at least.
Trand is bumming around even in the forest.

I'll go make some tea.
Ooh, sorry to bother you. Make sure it's hot.
...Don't you think the reason why this man is so arrogant is because you're letting him?
Uh-uh. Trand was like this before we met Knight.

Dialogue merges here.

*giggle* I see that everyone is getting along very nicely with Dame Regina.
Yeah, we're the best of buddies. Right? Milady?
...The man really is ill-natured. Whatever. I'll add this to the menu, so order it when you like.
And let me warn you; the tea costs extra.

This makes it so that Grimoire Chances have a 40% chance of becoming an Active Grimoire Chances. There are better ways to farm for Grimoires.

...Sorry to keep you all waiting. It turned out pretty well.
Whoa...! This smells good! And it looks normal!
...What. You have a problem with what my cooking usually looks like?
E-Er, that's not what I meant... Right, Knight?

I have a problem.
...Ho-ho. I'll remember that.
You pissed her off... You're too honest, Knight.

I don't have a problem.
Hmph, of course. Apicius arranged his recipes to entertain by looks as well.
...You're amazing.

...I can't tell you.
That sounds suspicious. ...Very well.

Dialogue merges here.

Regina. More.
...You always eat so fast. Are you even tasting the flavor?
I'm tasting it. The fat of the meat and the tanginess of the sweet and-sour sauce, absolute harmony. Chloe likes the sweet-and-sour sauce. And the spices are great. The brisk texture and scent are unique.
Hmm, you actually have sharp taste buds. The strong smell is thanks to the forest vegetables. Because of the harsh living conditions and various beings, there are a lot of strong-smelling plants.
You're right. There actually are a lot of smells in the forest.
But I've heard that they're more apt for medicine than food.
When prepared normally, the other ingredients lose to the strong scent.
This leek here needs special preparation or else it can't be eaten.
*giggle*
...What is it, Arianna? You shouldn't look at someone's face and just laugh.
Ah, please excuse me. I was just thinking about how much fun you look like you're having talking about cooking.
Having... fun...? Was I looking like that?

You were.
...Shoot.

You weren't.
I-I see. Phew...

Dialogue merges here.

Why? I like the Dame Regina who smiles while talking about food.
D-Don't say things like that.
Anyway, I'll add this to the menu, so order it when you like.
...Regina, are you embarrassed?
I'm not embarrassed!

Essentially, it's an automatic Prevent Order that activates at the start of the fight. Could come in handy for a few places.

...Sorry to keep you all waiting. It turned out pretty well. I had Arianna help out again. I thank you.
Oh, no, it was fun for me, too. The kitchen at Cafe is full of utensils!
Hmmm... It looks small, but it's heavy. Looks like this'll be quite the eats.
*giggle* Please enjoy!
I will!
*munch* *munch*
This is good. It's not meat, but Chloe approves.
Same here. The warm sweetness of the chestnuts is great.
Moon cakes get their name from being shaped after the moon. In one region, it's tradition to eat these while gazing the moon over with friends.
Moon over... a friend?
Yeah.
Th-Then... like this? It's a bit embarrassing.
Uh, kid?
Arianna, why are you eating the moon cakes while staring at Knight?
Huh? But I thought you're supposed to do this?
It may be rude to Sir Knight, but he is the only dear person who is always near me.

Help.

......
...Then I'll look at Trand.
......
...Don't worry. You'll find someone who'll eat moon cakes for you one day, Flavio.
She's right. You are a good person!
Th-That's not what this is about! It's not that I don't have anyone; it's that there's no such tradition!
...If you really want to, I could eat one for you.
...Oh!?
...Don't worry. I was joking.

Shot down.

Apicius took a hint from that tradition and created his own version. Alright then, I'll add this to the menu, so order this again.

Increases the party's leg bind resistance by 80%. Handy for a few boss fights. That's all we can cook for now.

Cass has nothing new to say, but there is a new bar patron we can talk to here.

Hey, you! Bottomless pit!
Bottomless... pit? I wonder what he could be talking about.
I'm talking about shorty there! In the hat! I'm always watching her! She orders tons of food, and just gulps it all down like it's nothing. Little girls aren't supposed to pig out like that! She's gotta be so embarrased!
Nah. Not really embarrassing.
Huh? But anyone would be embarrassed by that! It's not normal to eat that much!
Normal is normal. Chloe is Chloe.
Rrrgh... Gah... Shut up, stupid!
What's wrong with that kid?
I-It's like looking into my own past...! Gah, that's kinda creepy.
...Ah, youth.

Miss Quona has nothing but praise for you. It seems as though she's gotten pretty fond of all of you. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Try to avoid any unnecessary risks.

...By now, there is very little I can tell you about the Labyrinth that you wouldn't already know. I do hope that you remain here to explore the Labyrinth, even after you have completed the ritual... But... I suppose that would be rather selfish of me... Please excuse me. I wish you the best of luck.

Back to the 9th floor.

Chloe's comment gives you pause and you listen carefully. Indeed, you hear the very soft sounds of chirping from somewhere.

The chirping's pretty faint. Whatever's doing it must be weak.

Though you have misgivings about this, you begin searching the area for the source of the chirping. Sound enough, you find a monster's chick chirping pitifully at the roots of one of the trees. The down-covered chick is frantically shaking its head, but its movements seem weak and lifeless.

The poor thing... Could it be in pain? If only we could help it...
But it's a monster. It's tiny now, but when it grows up, it might be dangerous.
This is true, but...

You cannot discount Chloe's objection. Though this chick may be in pain, it is still a monster. That must be factored in when deciding whether to save the chick's life or not.

May as well.

You cannot abandon a living thing, even a monster, to such pain and suffering.

Okay. If you say so.
I think this chick swallowed something. If we help it cough it up, that should fix the problem.
Uh... How do we do that with a chick?

You quietly crouch down so as not to startle the suffering chick.

Clearly we must shake the obstruction out.

If there is something stuck in its throat, then you see only one way to remove it... You flip the chick over and shake it!

D-Dude, you're gonna hurt it!
Wait... Huh?

After one or two vigorous shakes, the chick makes a small belching sound, and a stone comes tumbling out! To your surprise, the object lodged in the chick's throat turns out to be a large gem.

Now that the foreign object has been expelled, the chick steadily regains its normal breathing.

It'll be okay now. It just needs to warm up, since it's weak.

You do what you can to ensure that the chick's body temperature does not fall any further. After some time, the chick raises its head to look at you, and then gives a hearty chirp.

Thank goodness... I believe it will be all right now!

You return the chick to its nest before resuming your investigation.

Something's looking at us.

That looks like a mean one. Ugh, this isn't going to end well, is it?
Yet we must pass through here if we mean to make any progress. I hope that we can find some solution...

You decide to track the monster's moves carefully as you search for a way to move through the room.

Oh? That monster... there's something happening to it.

You look to see that the green monster which had been caught in the thorns slumps over, seemingly weakened.

I don't blame it... Those vines really hurt. Looks like even monsters have to look out for them.

Hmm... We could use this. These vines might make it easier to dodge.

With that useful trick in mind, you begin your attempt to proceed.

And I head up to the 10th floor.

It'll be by the stairs. Do we explore for a while?

Oh, Chloe's figured out how this whole boss thing works.

We must reach the monster's domain. Peak performances, everyone!

Now that you have reached a new floor, you take even greater caution than before with every step...

Knight... Can I talk to you for a sec?

But before you can begin exploring this new floor, Flavio stops you. It seems the young man wishes this to remain private, as he keeps his eyes on the others and speaks in low tones.

Knight... How are you holding up? It seems like you're getting more used to transforming lately... and that makes me worried.

You surmise that your friend is concerned for your physical well-being. But for the moment at least, there is nothing wrong with your health. You feel that you have control over that power.

Ngh... The darkness in my arm...!
No...! Knight!? ...Wait, what do you mean by darkness?

Maybe the darkness in my heart?
Why're you asking me!?
Hmph... If you can fool around like that, I take it you're just fine?
...I guess that's okay.
But seriously, you need to cool it with the jokes. If I go to an early grave, I'll blame this for it in my will!

Flavio sighs before anxiously glancing at your right arm.

If we finish exploring Ginnungagap and still don't figure it out, let's have them look into it at the Library.

The Midgard Library is indeed known as an edifice of wisdom... They may be able to help resolve the situation. Arianna, who had been walking on ahead, rushes over to you, breaking up your chat with Flavio.

Is something amiss?
Oh, uh, sorry! We're almost done, just give us another second!
Ah? Very well.
Keep what we discussed a secret from her for a while, okay? I want her to stay focused until the ritual's over with.

With that, the young man leaves your side, running to meet up with the others as they walk on ahead. You are about to follow his lead when you notice Bertrand staring at you with a curious expression.

Sorry. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop or anything, but...

Bertrand seems to be unable to find the words to continue. He scratches his head before quietly muttering...

...That's a true friend you have there.

He can be a pain.
Haha... But even that proves how loyal he is to you.

With that, Bertrand lightly taps your shoulder and goes on ahead, slouching his way along as usual. You follow his somewhat pensive stride and continue investigating the forest with your guildmates.

Camera pans to the Baby Salamander and then the Tree Sponge.

The other, as I remember, moves back and forth on its set path... We've encountered them both often enough that I think we can manage.

You try to remember the particulars of each monster's behavior as you proceed through the room...

Y-Yikes... I guess even monsters get caught up in friendly fire.

It's a bit heartbreaking...

You feel an indescribable sadness at seeing monsters which share territory destroy one another...

Well, they're not the same species. But I guess you have a point...
I see it as a win for us. Thanks to that lizard, we're in the clear.
Uh, that's true, but...

Though your feelings about this are mixed, you can use this to your advantage when proceeding, or choose a different way.

I decide to go back to town at this point. Hanna has nothing new to say in Story, so it's time for another nap.

As you sit there, you hear a knock at your door. Who could it be at this hour...?

Uhhh, well we've already seen all of them at this point. Um, Arianna?

You decide to get some rest in preparation for tomorrow.

I'm still asleep.

Come, we can go to the lobby together.
I'll give you some time until you are done with your morning ritual. Is this all right?
I'm surprised, though... You're not much of a morning person, are you, Sir Knight?
Hahah... it's a side of you I hadn't expected.

Oh yeah, if you select a character when you've already viewed their inn scene for the current Stratum, you'll just get a bonus scene where nothing much happens. It's the exact same scene no matter how many times or when you view it. Anyways, I got some new ingredients, so we can do some more cooking.

...Sorry to keep you waiting. Here you go. It turned out pretty well.
It's curry! I freaking love this stuff! Oh man, this smells awesome!
I wonder who's excited...
*giggle* Sir Flavio really must love curry.
I am... not very fond of spicy foods...

Pour some honey on it.
I see. No matter how spicy the curry may be, it must bow to the power of honey!
Er, no! Maybe if you were still cooking it, but now? It'd just be crappy curry!
Huh, is that so!?

Add an egg.
Add an egg? Will that make it less spicy?
Technically, no. More like it makes it easier to eat. It makes it pleasant and cools down the roux to a balanced heat.
I see...!
I see... That might be okay then!

Suck it up and eat it.
Oh... I suppose I have no other choice.
If it's that hard for you, why don't you rest your tongue every so often with something cold and sweet like lassi?
You don't have to force yourself to eat it so quickly. Just do it at your own pace!

Dialogue merges here.

...I'm surprised. You're pretty knowledgeable with curry.
Well, I was raised in a place where I could look up things I liked as much as I wanted.
Midgard Library is incredible. You can become a genius of curry.

Isn't that awesome?
Yes, that's awesome. I want to look up meat.
Then I would like to look up sweets!
To you guys, the world-famous temple of knowledge is nothing but a cooking class, eh?

Not really.
Huh, not really?
Midgard Library is nothing, then...
Those are some bold words to be throwing at the temple of knowledge.

Dialogue merges here.

Hrm, I'd like to visit Midgard Library one of these days...
But the urgent duty is reproducing Apicius's recipes. I'll add this to the menu, so feel free to order it whenever you feel like it.

Increases your party's max HP by 20%. Could be handy for defensively oriented parties, but there are usually other meals I prefer.

...Sorry to keep you all waiting. It turned out pretty well.
Well, this one sure makes an impact.
B-But, it looks like it's not used directly in the dish, so it's okay... I guess?
This is interesting. Is this to retain the heat of the dish?
Yeah. Temperature is part of the taste, after all. I can keep the ideal flavor at this temperature.
Being able to serve hot foods hot, this technology is great news to chefs.
Temperature is part of the taste... I've never thought of that before. I cannot eat very hot food, though...
But I shall try my best!

Good luck, Arianna.
Yes, I shall challenge this hot dish!

Don't strain yourself.
No. In order to answer Dame Regina's hard work making this dish... I shall overcome my weakness!

Dialogue merges here.

This is a big ordeal for a single dish...
I'm glad you think that way, but if it's your constitution, then-- Hey! Don't stuff your mouth like that!
...! ......! ......!?
It... It's... It's spicy! It may be hot, but it's even spicier! I-It's hot... and spicy... It's spicy and hot!
It's because you stuffed your mouth like that. Couldn't you tell it was spicy by looking at it...?
It... It was red... But tomato soup isn't spicy...! I-Ich ho shpaishee... Wawer...!
It looks like temperature was the least of your problems...
I didn't know you couldn't eat spicy things. It's so good, though.
I cannot believe you can eat such foods with a straight face...
I'll put this on the menu, but make sure to take care when ordering for Arianna. ...I'll change it so that every person can adjust the level of spiciness.

Self explanatory, but not really that great of an effect. Regina has nothing new to say in Story mode.

Hey! Everyone at the bar's talkin' 'bout how yeh lot've reached the 10th floor. Explorers are a dime a dozen here, but half of 'em couldn't make it to the 10th. Gotta give it up to yeh Midgard folk. Hey... hold on a tick. When did the trees start turnin' all red, now? Around the 6th floor, eh...? So the place changed on yeh after five floors. And now yeh're on the 10th. That's five floors above when it turned red... So yeh think the trees are gonna change again on the next floor...? Oi, yeh lot! Hurry and continue yer investigation to see if I'm right!

There's also a new bar patron we can talk to.

My, if it isn't Bertrand. I heard you were working under Guild... is that still going on, then?
Geez, lady. Putting it like that, you make it sound like I can't stick to a job.
My, was I being rude? I'm afraid I don't see any evidence to the contrary. But, it's good to know that there's somebody in town who knows what's going on. Once you've finished amusing yourself, please do come take the request again.
Request...? Was there something we were supposed to be working on? We haven't heard about anything.
Something from before I teamed up with you. Back then, I took whatever jobs I could get, whether I wanted to or not. I needed the money. I mean, it's almost like I'm feeding an army. Isn't that right, Chloe?
Ahem.
Sir Bertrand and Dame Chloe are leading an army!?

That's... Arianna, that's not what he meant... Figure of speech. That's all.

Marion and Dubois have no new dialogue in Story. Time to go back to the 10th floor.

Even from behind, you recognize them as belonging to the Esbat guild you once encountered. Even before you can call out to them, the woman of the pair notices you, and speaks with a slight smile.

You must really love dangerous work.

The girl mutters in a somewhat baffled tone.

You've probably figured out by now that the forest gets more dangerous the further in you go. If you need a boost in making progress, I don't mind healing you. How about it?

Full heals are always nice. Oh, and this event is exclusive to Story. Classic has no access to full heals, and only gets an Amrita from them.

No problem.

The woman chants some odd syllables and touches the ground...

Come back anytime and I'll heal you again. You should be grateful, haha!

The woman's manner is carefree, but the tall man standing behind you gives you only a cold stare.

Do not take this to mean we're allowing your kind to proceed. You'd better be grateful for the goodwill of the Grand Duchy and Milady.
Say that again...?
Ha... If you must draw your weapon, then we will have no reason to hold back either.
Wilhelm, I thought I told you to stop this.
......
If you're off to fight the Flame Demon, be careful. It's a very tough opponent.

The woman's smile and the man's cold gaze see you off as you return to your investigation.

They'll continue to offer us full heals at this spot until we take out Flame Demon.

The tree trunk before you is forked in two, and a shining liquid spills over the center.

What's this?
Is it sap? I've never seen it pool up like this before.

You may try drinking the liquid, or ignore it and be on your way.

Always consume foreign matter within the Labyrinth.

There is enough of the shining liquid for you all. You each take turns scooping up a handful and swallowing it. The mild sweetness of the shining liquid drives away your exhaustion!

This elegant sweetness would go wonderfully with tea...
Mm-hm. It's good. Is there more?

You check the liquid's source in response to the black-robed girl's question. There isn't enough to drink now, but the liquid is slowly pooling again. By tomorrow, there should be enough for you all to have another drink.

Ooh, that's helpful. It's always good to find nice rest spots.
But what is this stuff? We've all had some and we still didn't figure it out.
The details aren't important. It's sap. Probably.
Probably.
...The way you guys say it doesn't really inspire confidence.

Nevertheless, the shining liquid is most welcome on your arduous journey. You decide to make a mental note of this place as you return to exploring.

There is nothing else left on this floor aside from Flame Demon herself. We'll get around to fighting her next time.

I've actually had food that spicy before. It's true, that level of spiciness just kinda overwhelms and burns you.

Update 36: Moths: Worse Than Spiders

SYSTEM: It looks almost like an empty pond. The basin is filled not with water, but sand, and dead plants are scattered on top. Do you remember the quest you accepted at the bar for bringing the crystalline Wood Rose back? Perchance the dunes before your eyes make up the sandland that is said to give birth to the famed Wood Rose. You can choose to dig your hands into the sandland to search and see if anything lies within.
Alright, people, start digging!
SYSTEM: You split up to sift through the sand. To your chagrin, however, the sand is fairly deep... It won't be easy to find anything here.
Rrer!
SYSTEM: As the search progresses, you at last feel a hardened object under your spade. Taking care not to lose it, you pry around the area to dig it up.
Rrr-ooh...
SYSTEM: It's a beautiful, peach-toned crystal in the shape of rose petals curled into a ball. Its resemblance to an organic, blooming rose is uncanny...
I see why the guy thinks this is the solution he's looking for.
Think it'll actually work?
Ahaha, hell no. If the last two didn't work, what'll make this time any different?

Back we go, then.

A-Ahh... Yeh're back. I meant to talk to yeh about that request... Wait, yeh found it!? I hate to be the one to tell yeh, but the request was canceled.
Wait, what?
Yeh're not gonna believe this... I barely believe it myself! Those two are getting married! After I sent yeh on yer way, that tosser came in, and I gave him a piece of my mind. “Have yeh no pride!?" I said to him. “All a real man needs to woo a woman is his own body!" And what happens then? The tosser comes back, lady on his arm!
You're kidding me. You literally have to be kidding me. I refuse to believe this happened.
He thanked me for giving him the guts to come out and propose to her. And listen to this... She'd already fallen for him the moment she saw him!
What would someone see in a man as desperate as that?
What does she see in him!? That's what I'd like to know! According to her, she didn't want any fancy gifts, just an honest display of love. I couldn't believe my ears! She didn't want anything!? Does such a lass really exist!?
...Plenty of them exist.
But sure enough... That's how the request was canceled. I feel terrible for yeh lot. ...Just between yeh and me... We're mates, right? Well, I've a proposition of my own. If yeh don't need this...rose thingy, I feel bad enough that I'll buy it off yeh.
Ohohohoho, does big, bad Cass have his eyes on someone?
No, that isn't why! Yeh're way off base! I just feel bad for yeh lot, is all... Look, I'll just buy it, okay!?
Hard to say no to a proposition like that, thank you very much!
Here's yer money, and all sales are final. Now go home already! Till next time...

I know, I know, it's for the guild coffers.
Eh, wha?

A very nice infusion of money and some really good EXP. I'd say the reward is disproportionate to the effort we put in, in our favor, but oh well.

I opt to have Freyja max out the basic whip skills just to get some extra damage and bind chance out of them.

I don't spend Asriel's skill point because he's going to be taking a rest very, very soon.

I want to increase the range of Unbind and Refresh on Realga, due to certain enemies we'll be running into soon.

Torpor Curse gets an extra 1% to its base chance.

Well, I had to explain the Explorers Guild options at some point.

Retire unlocks once a character reaches level 30. Using it basically deletes that character, but then lets you make a new character at either half of the retired character's level, or level 30, whatever's lowest. The character created from retiring will, in exchange for all of this, extra skill points and extra base stats.

quote:

Retired at:
30 to 39: +4 skill points, +1 all stats
40 to 49: +5 skill points, +2 all stats
50 to 59: +6 skill points, +3 all stats
60 to 69: +7 skill points, +4 all stats
70 to 98: +8 skill points, +5 all stats
99: +10 skill points, +10 all stats

As you can see, retiring at 99 gives a huge boost to the resulting character, but it is really not worth it beforehand.

Alter Class (I just call it reclassing) is available at any time. Reclassing a character will reduce their level by 5, but also let you pick new class (excluding Beast and Fafnir; neither of those classes can be reclassed into or reclassed out of). Unlike retiring, the character will keep their name and portrait, as well as their base stats and stat growths. What you essentially get out of reclassing is access to a class's level 11-20 skills and their Force skills, with the old class's stats.

Rest reduces a character's level by 2, unequips all of their equipment and Grimoires, and resets their skill point allocations. This is what I'm about to do to Asriel, since Horse Slash is starting to fall off at this point.

Dismiss permanently deletes a character from the guild roster. It really is as simple as that.

Rename lets you change someone's name, pretty obviously. In EO2 and EO3, renaming, unbelievably, cost 1000 en to do, but EO4 changed it so that renaming is free. A good change, because there's no gameplay reason for renaming to cost money.

Notice how Ranger's options are different. Story mode characters (which Ranger technically is since I used NG+ on a Story save to get him) can't be renamed or dismissed, and retiring is referred to as "training." Also, as mentioned above, Ranger can't reclass out of Fafnir.

Think I'll...have a nice dream...
Does a nap need to be that dramatic...?

So now Asriel's two levels lower and had all his stuff unequipped (it just gets put back in our inventory, thankfully), but more importantly...

All his skill points are now reset.

The major changes are:
  • No points in Phys ATK Up or Pre-Initiative
  • Horse Slash is down to 3 from 10
  • Upward Slash is maxed out, up from 1
  • Swallow Strike is now maxed out instead of not learned at all

I opted to invest more in Upward Slash so I lose out on as little damage as necessary when setting up Upper Stance (a level 10 Upward Slash deals 210% damage, compared to a level 1 which only deals 100%). Flame Grater's also still maxed out.

Swallow Strike is Asriel's new main skill. Those of you familiar with EO2 will remember it as Midareba, and it's been nerfed quite a bit from that game. Firstly, the damage hasn't scaled up that much compared to EO2, meaning it kind of loses out given that most enemies have massively higher HP totals now. Secondly, and most importantly, Swallow Strike has a base accuracy penalty now, meaning that each hit has a higher-than-average chance to miss. It's not THAT bad a penalty (-4 at 1-4, -3 at 5-9, -1 at 10-20), but it'll still miss more than most other skills.

At level 10, Swallow Strike costs 22 TP, and deals 3 hits of 125% damage--375% damage total. With a level 10 Upper Stance, that's boosted to 431% damage.

At this point, I did a LOT of offscreen grinding to get some better Grimoires for everyone else, and dumped like 200+ level 1-5 Grimoires into Grimoire Recycle, and got this piece of junk.

I also traded this duplicate Overheal Grimoire for a lv8 Phys DEF Up for Ursa.

And here's everyone's latest Grimoire loadouts. This update is going to be a pretty good lesson in why taking high-level Grimoire-boosted skills into normal exploration isn't that great an idea.

Incidentally, here's Abigail's quest dialogue.

You accepted the quest? Thank you so much for your continued help! What I want to ask for today is...materials for a new weapon my dad is thinking of building. Um, he needs...
5 Century Shells, and 2 Plum Quills! It does sound a bit challenging...but would you still be willing to do it? I'll be watching the shop, so just sell them to me like usual when you collect them! I'll be waiting here. Thank you so much!

We already know that Century Shells come from Metal Tortoises, but Plum Quills come from an enemy we'll see soon.

No time like the present. Let's get going.

Okay, all we need to do is is get Jackie a really big cannon, get someone some really heavy fireproof clothing, and then shoot straight towards that chest.
Um, could we maybe just wait until we reach that part of the floor?
Someone doesn't see the value of instant gratification, I see.

No...! I thought I eliminated the mother of those vile creatures!
Oh my gods, Asriel, they're spiders. Give it a rest.
Exactly.

Venomous Spider
HP: 398, STR: 33, TEC: 26, VIT: 24, AGI: 25, LUC: 28
Skills:
  • Binding String: Uses the head. Attempts to bind each party member's head, arms, and legs, with a 20% base chance. Has a 70% speed modifier.
Drops:
  • Normal: Sticky Web. 50% chance. Sells for 287 en. 1 needed to make Spider Web (+105 ATK).
"Sticky web spun by a Venomous Spider. Drying it makes it workable into weapons."
  • Conditional: Bound Mandible (Kill while head is bound). 80% chance. Sells for 404 en. 1 needed to make Head Guard (Immunity to head binds).
"A mandible now bound an unable to spit web. Its razor sharpness remains threatening."
  • Ingredient: Spider Carcass. 1 given. 1 needed to make Fried Whole Spider (Chinese Food 4; protects party from one instance of mortal damage for 3 turns).
    "A lifeless spider."

100% 100% 100%

A spider that hunts in the woods. Stop it from spinning its web...

Venomous Spiders are capable of making quite a lot of encounters considerably more annoying, either by binding your front liners' arms, or your casters' heads. Not much else to them.

Demonstrating how much Asriel's new Upper Slash levels hurt. It's still minor damage, but I'm still losing less damage when Asriel doesn't have a stance compared to before.

This is also the point in the game where I start advocating for Torpor Curse over Venom Curse, since canceling out one or more enemy turns and getting extra damage on them from a physical damage dealer is worth a lot more now than poison damage.

Waking up to your death's gotta be really awful.

There, that's one spider dead.
Why do you hate spiders so much...?
Can't stand how they skitter around everywhere and spin webs, with no regard for rules. Earth is their playpen.

SYSTEM: If you wish to see if they are edible, you may nominate someone to try it...
Pink mushrooms. Can't say I've seen these before.
Rr?
She's asking if they're healing mushrooms.
Well, we've done stupider things. Might as well...

SYSTEM: The rest of you discuss who will be the next to have a bite, when suddenly, Realga bursts out laughing. As you watch this outburst, perplexed, Realga grabs the other mushroom and stumbles toward you.
Ahahaheh, Freyja, you gotta try this!
U-um, n-no thank you, I'm fu-- Mrph!
SYSTEM: With a huge grin, Realga shoves the other mushroom into Freyja's mouth! Freyja has no choice but to swallow the mushroom, upon which they begin laughing out loud as well.
Ahehe... My, these are actually tasty...
Glad I didn't eat them first.
SYSTEM: This appears to be a poisonous mushroom that induces euphoria in those who eat it! You ponder what to do, but the two seem to have collapsed without you noticing. You edge toward them to observe...
Well. Anyone know where the Nectars are?
They're not dead, just unconscious. They're still breathing, see?
SYSTEM: After some time passes, the pair woozily sits back up, holding their heads. They appear to have come to their senses.
Ow, ow, ow...
Oh, my aching everything... But especially my head...
Maybe we should take this as a lesson about eating food in the Labyrinth...
When demon girl's telling you not to eat something, something's wrong.
SYSTEM: When you ask about the incident, they recall falling unconscious after eating the mushroom... But they seem to remember nothing else, and both of them have migraines now that they've come to.

Both participants in the event lose 150 HP and 80 TP.

SYSTEM: You feel foolish to have eaten something that grows in the Labyrinth... The pair cradles their heads as you move on.

If you have a Beast try to eat the initial mushroom, you'll instead get dialogue about your Beast recognizing that the mushroom is poisonous.

Oh god no.

Great Moth
HP: 1571, STR: 38, TEC: 26, VIT: 32, AGI: 27, LUC: 32

Drops:
  • Normal: Plum Quill. 80% chance. Sells for 555 en. 1 needed to make Purpure Mail (+45 DEF). 1 Scent Wood and 4 Plum Quills needed to make Pelta (+37 DEF). 5 Century Shells and 2 Plum Quills needed to make Pattisa.

This moth is known to emit a disorienting powder before striking at its target.

gently caress Great Moths. gently caress them gently caress them gently caress them. They've got a lot of HP, they have access to party-wide panic, and Slice and Dice goes from "what the hell was the point of that" to "instant death," because panic disables evasion. These things are partially why I bought Realga a Luck Staff--not being able to heal panic easily makes Great Moths really annoying, and I suffered more than one game over to a fight with a Great Moth in it on my first playthrough.

Rark rark! Rreow!
I'm always hungry because I'm always sad...

How the gently caress did Sophie get tagged with the panic there?! She has a 30+ LUC advantage on the thing, for christ's sake.

SHINJOO! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD, WITH MONAKO!
I always knew she was up to no good...

Alright, come on, snap out of it.

At least Sophie's high LUC means her recovery time is very low.

Moths are almost as bad as spiders.
Man, I didn't even get to taste it...
What was even happening in your head during that panic?
I dunno, it felt like I was a different person.
I'd believe it. You sounded eerily like Charlotte there...

This event is automatic--it starts as soon as we step on this tile.

SYSTEM: It looks very much like the monster known as Etria's nightmare, which caused untold suffering in the far-off land of Etria. But this is no dream! You must rouse yourself from your stupor and choose what action to take! You may avert your eyes from the nightmare you behold and walk away, or stand and face it.
We must stand and face it!
Ooh, boar meat!
SYSTEM: You each take your weapons in hand and charge at the nightmare before you with intent to slay it!

Trying to silently back away results in "Etria's nightmare" blindsiding you.

Hurt Babirusa
HP: 4158, STR: 45, TEC: 27, VIT: 33, AGI: 28, LUC: 24

Long have these boars plagued the residents of Etria... Do not stand in their path!

The Hurt Babirusa is no joke. That 4158 HP is quite a lot, especially given that it also has 75% resistance to all elemental damage (although that's irrelevant with our current party), and 120% STR damage with 45 STR equals pain.

If you're wondering what the "Etria's nightmare" stuff is about, Babirusas are an annoying enemy from deep in EOU's 5th Stratum, where they were pretty much the same as this thing, right down to having Fang Flurry.

In a really stupid move, I forgot that Fang Flurry uses the legs, not the head.

Just showing Freyja and Asriel's basic damage output.

Well, it's something.

Grrk...
That bear seriously overestimates herself a lot...

Ooh, that's kind of lucky.

https://zippy.gfycat.com/TameJealousDiplodocus.webm (GIF version)

Strike strike strike strike!
But you only hit it three times.

Demoing Swallow Strike. If you're wondering why its damage might seem low, that's because it's only level 15--135% damage per hit for 3 hits, 405% damage total.

...And then Freyja just shows it up with a two-bind Ecstasy.

Ack!

Get up, you stupid bear, we need you!
...Rrer?
Take it as a compliment.

Having your Beast use Hit-Taker when they're not at full HP against all-party attacks isn't very smart.

This is a lazy way to get Ursa back on her feet in fighting conditions.

No graves for us! Not until I get my dues!

I'd prefer a grave to bleeding this badly...

Mmm, boar thigh... Alright, I've had my fill. You can kill it now!

Grrdlr.

We don't get anything for this event fight, aside from the Hurt Babirusa's entry in the Monstrous Codex, which does count for 100% completion.

A convenient shortcut back to near the start of the floor.

There's a Chop point here, too, with Sakura Petals for ingredients.

Oh boy.

Good, good.

Let's use that money to develop the town, first.

The new ad campaigns. The highlighted groups are who I'm trying to appeal to.

New items. I'm just going to stop commenting on items that aren't interesting from this point on, since I've exhausted my repertoire of things to say about boring items.

Spectrum Axe (+110 ATK) is unlocked by selling 3 Prism Shells.

Turtle Claw (+115 ATK) is unlocked by selling 1 Century Shell.

Purpure Mail (+45 DEF) is unlocked by selling 1 Plum Quill.

Head Guard (Immunity to head binds) is made from 1 Bound Mandible. I'll probably put the one we already have on Realga if we ever fight an FOE or boss that can reliably bind heads, but it's not something I'd really want for anyone else.

Fortune Necklace (+7 LUC) is unlocked by selling 7 Gold Crests. I could buy one for Freyja if I really wanted to give her better chances of binding stuff, but I value more DEF on her, especially since Sophie can easily take care of any binds that Freyja can't.

SYSTEM: You may try picking the fruits and eating them, or avoid recklessly eating the forest's bounty and continue onward.
I haven't had a good, sweet fruit in a while...
Rrrgh...
There's m-monsters here...
SYSTEM: As you reach towards the fruits, shining like gems in the light, an ominous presence suddenly fills the area! You draw your weapons in the confusion just before monsters burst from their hiding places to attack you!

Raven
HP: 454, STR: 34, TEC: 25, VIT: 25, AGI: 29, LUC: 26
Skills:
  • Black Wings: Uses the arms. Reduces the party's elemental attack by 50% for 4 turns. Has no speed modifier.
Drops:
  • Normal: Azure Beak. 55% chance. Sells for 271 en. 1 needed to make Wyrmhunter (+101 ATK). 5 Malachites and 2 Azure Beaks needed to make Juzumaru (+123 ATK). 3 Prehnites and 5 Azure Beaks needed to make Fluted Armor (+53 DEF, +8 TP).
"Strong, sharp beak from a pale bird. Its sharpness is used in some weapons."

Its dark feathers are considered an ill omen to adventurers.

Ravens are a really big nuisance if you have an Alchemist and non-notable otherwise. They can make enemies that resist physical damage, like the Metal Tortoises, more annoying, I suppose.

They don't even hit that hard.

Blech. Feathers don't taste of anything.

I-I ground you...
Are you ever going to be able to not stutter or let your sentences taper off?
A-ah...
See?

Look at this. My staff's completely clean--no clumps of feathers, nothing.

SYSTEM: You lower your weapons and pick some of the red, gemlike fruits. When you bite into one, its sweet juice fills your mouth...
Alright, I guess all Labyrinth food isn't that bad...
"That bad?!" These things are amazing!
I agree with the demon, for once.
SYSTEM: Unable to get enough of that taste, you eat one after another of the red fruits. The fruits are greatly effective at soothing your exhaustion!

A party-wide 70 TP heal, not bad.

SYSTEM: After you have had your fill, you look around and see that there are several more unripe fruits on the vine. These fruits should ripen by the next day for you to enjoy once more. You all agree that it is worth remembering this place as you go on your way deeper into the maze of cherry blossoms.

I don't really have a lot of reason to come back here again, but whatever.

That's, like, a pure apple-red horn.
It looks too tough to eat. ...The rhino itself, not the horn.
SYSTEM: It shows no sign of moving yet, but there's no knowing what actions it might take once it spots you. You should watch its movements cautiously as you proceed.
Looks docile. Let's just get moving.

I-it's about to charge! MOVE!

Phew...
And to think, you were terrified of deer just some months ago.
Rr-hrm.
L-Luca told you about that? Ugh...

The Charging Rhino's name tells all, basically. If we enter its line of sight, it will charge that direction until it hits a wall on the next step.

Back, now!

Not the smartest of monsters...
Either that, or it just can't stop.
SYSTEM: It seems its inability to stop once it starts charging works against it if the ground in its path is unstable... You can already see how this knowledge will work to your advantage. You decide to keep careful track of the topography and the monster's positions as you go.

It's exactly as it looks: if we're near a hole in the ground, and a Charged Rhino charges us, it will fall in, and be erased from the map until we leave the floor and come back.

See, THIS is something you should put in a treasure chest!

Now there's two rhinos. How will we ever get past this impenetrable wall?

Sidestep them on the lower part of the floor, for one.

Then we make this one charge over here.

Then we make it charge that way again, making it plummet to its death.

You think anyone down on the ground is seeing all these rhinos dropping down and wondering "what is going on?"

And now they're both dead from the multi-kilometer drop from the 4th Stratum down to the ground.

Oh hey, this encounter loving sucks.

Because both of these assholes are capable of killing Ursa if she tanks one of the all-party attacks.

Mmm-mm... Tortoise and moth meat... It's so good!
Well, add that to the list of "sentences I never thought I'd hear."

Well, that's one of them down. Note how low Asriel's getting on TP here, though. I've been cutting out a lot of encounters, but I've been deliberately trying to save TP on him. This is why loading up on Grimoire-boosted skills for normal exploration early on and/or on low TP classes like Ronin is a bad idea.

loving ow.

Can... Can we just toss the shell through one of those holes?
Nah.

Three rhinos. Yep.

Don't you just "love" getting into random encounters when an FOE is one turn away from you?

In any other EO game, I would've been staring a game over right in the face, since I would not have been able to kill that encounter in one turn.

The middle rhino will charge to its death from this pit.

The lower rhino, that pit.

And the upper rhino, that pit on the left.

The other chop point. Pea Pods, yep.

And that's the floor. Notice how every floor in Petal Bridge is circular, a really neat touch, and I imagine a really big pain in the rear end during design.

Well, I've had enough being charged by monsters for one day. Back to town?
Of course! It's almost dinner time.

...Sometimes when my daughter and I look up at the Labyrinth, we try to guess which branch you're on...
The one with all the floating islands. Seems like it'd be pretty obvious.
Down here, you just seem like a bunch of kids, but you must be so different in the Labyrinth... I wish I could see it. Oh, I know! How about I go along with you on your investigation? You'll all protect me, right? Then there's nothing to worry about!
You seem like you'd do fine on your own, Miss Hanna.
Eh? You don't think I'll need protection...? And just what is that supposed to mean? The nerve! Saying something like that to a delicate damsel like myself! I may just faint...! Bahahaha!

Abigail's still stuck in her quest dialogue, but I'll cheat and just pull from the game script here.

Welcome! Oh, hi everyone! I was waiting for you to show up! Um... I made some cookies... They're right here, so if you want to have some, you're w-welcome to...!
GIMME GIMME GIMME!
Okay, yeah, eat them all, why don't you? It's not like I'D want some sweets after a long day of exploring...
...How are they? D-Do they taste okay? I did try a couple, but... Um, before you go--can you tell me what you thought of them...? Next time, I want them to be even better!
Mm... Just serve them when they're warmer and softer, and they'll be perfect!
I'd probably say the same if I got to HAVE ANY.

Items, yep yep.

Kishindaio (+116 ATK) is unlocked by selling 1 Malachite and 2 Century Shells.

Spider Web (+105 ATK) is unlocked by selling 1 Sticky Web.

Wyrmhunter (+101 ATK) is unlocked by selling 1 Azure Beak.

The other explorers come here just to check out the cafe that Lumen provides ingredients for. You've all gotten fairly popular, huh?

How long has it been now since yeh lot first came here? And look at yeh now. Yeh're born naturals.
I'm mostly getting lucky that there's all this medicine for all the weird stuff that happens to us.
Heh heh, to tell yeh the truth, the first time I saw yeh lot... I thought yeh were pretty hopeless.
You already told us that. Months ago. Even I remember that.
Hrm? Wait a tick, did I already tell yeh that? My bad, but yeh were so hopeless it left a big impression on me! Haw! Didn't expect to be doing business with yeh for this long, but here's to a long and profitable relationship!

...Long ago, when the Labyrinth was first discovered, the Minister and I were both part of one of the first investigation teams.
M-Minister Dubois on an exploration... Seeing him now makes that hard to believe...
I wasn't interested in old folktales or texts, but something did catch my attention--a drawing I saw in one of the Minister's texts. It was a picture of a winged man, carrying a wingless figure in his arms. At the time, I dismissed it as just a piece of abstract art, but it seems there might have been some truth behind it. Well, that's all I have to say for now. Try to avoid any unnecessary risks.

I was merely thinking of something else. Do you remember that young man, the member of Guild Beowulf?
...Yep. I still remember burying him and Wulfgar.
If I recall correctly, it was he who gave you guidance when you first entered the Labyrinth, was he not?
Y-yeah... He helped us get by the dinosaurs using those traps...
...Even after one's death, stories of their courage remain among the people. ...Hearing the citizens' rumors about you reminded me of him. Pay me no mind, I suppose. Only the addled ramblings of an old man, hm? I wish the best of luck to you.

Before we take on the quests, here's the only new patrons for this floor.

Ey, it's Lumen! Have a drink! C'mon! You drinkin'? We just got the life scared outta us!
...Y'see, there's this scary monster. 's called the Deathstalker...
When it was hangin' 'round in the back, it was just looking at us, so I figured it was fine. Live, an' let...stare.
But soon as it came to the front, BAM! Hurtin' everywhere! Terrified! Panickin'!
Gah... We were really in for a big one there...
...That's hat guy and his guild?
Yep. Part of them, anyway.
No wonder they call themselves profesional idiots.

And now, the quests.

The wise duke:

Ahhh, there yeh lot are! It's another quest about those golden chess pieces. I found a guy who has a piece, and I doubt yeh'll be surprised at this... It's a Duke piece! Yeh lot don't have that one yet, right? Looks like the request comes from a guild, just like yeh guys. Dunno what they want from yeh, though. They're drinkin' here at the bar, so yeh can just ask 'em yerself.

Dinner for one:

Hmm? Yeh're taking that quest?
Is something wrong with it?
No, no, it shouldn't be a problem, at least for yeh lot. It's from a lass livin' by the town borders. She wants to feed her husband a dish usin' ingredients found in the forest. Ain't exactly exciting. Yeh could've left this one for the newbies, y'know... Oh, the ingredients... Hmm, what was it... She wanted one each of Bee Needle, Plum Quill, and Meteoric Spike.
Uhh... I'm pretty sure at least those first two are poisonous.
Eh? Are these things really edible? Yeah, I asked her the same question, but she says there's a way of gettin' the poison out. Well, there's a lotta poisonous things in this world that are great if yeh prepare 'em right. Hell, yeh've ordered a couple. ...Listen, I ain't saying yeh shouldn't take this quest or anything, but I kinda figured yeh lot would go after higher-stakes stuff. Well, yeh never know. Might find a taste of danger, even in a little errand like this! Well, best of luck anyway!

And lastly, let's talk to the guy who showed up for The wise duke.

Oh, you've come, Lumen. I've been waiting for you.
Y-you're the one who put up the q-quest about the chess piece? You...?
That's right. I'm surprised you know... but I guess if you want to survive in the depths of Yggdrasil, you need to have good intuition. Anyhow, let's get down to business. Like you guys, I formed a guild, and we're moving through the Labyrinth as a team... But lately, we've been strapped for cash. We can't even buy the equipment we need anymore. So, I want you to tell me where I can take, chop, or mine on the 4th Stratum. Just any one of those is fine. ...Of course, if you could find me one of each, then I'd add a little extra on top of giving you the Duke piece. Let me know once you've found any places you can point us towards. Thanks.
A talking wolf. Sure, why not. I mean, hat guy's got a talking tiger in his guild.

I'll go fill that guy in once we know where a take point on 18F is.

Next time: more of the 4th Stratum.

Well, we've reached the 3rd floor of the 4th Stratum, and that means it's time for a new party!

...In all honesty, you know what to expect from every guild member by now, so I'm gonna try a slight experiment: what will people vote for without my descriptions potentially affecting votes?

Pick a maximum of four of your favorites! Or party members that you think will work well together! Or pick a party as atrocious as the Medic and Troubadour front line that the old EO2 LP had for the first part of the 4th Stratum! It's mayhem, I tell ya!
