I decided to try my hand at mound-making last night, hoping for some jolly chaos. But nine times out of 10, I ended up invading a lone host who I had no real desire to terrorize (sunbro at heart). However! About seven times in a row, the game matched me with this same dude and every time, he would summon a red or purple for me to play with. We came up with a system where I would hide while he sat down and waited for them attack them--and they always did--and then I would swoop in to take them out. I ended up with a whole heap of vertebra shackles.

Thanks, guy. :3:

I've taken great enjoyment to being summoned after pontiff then escorting hosts to the anor Londo bonfire and usually right into the aldrich fight. I hate when phantoms just invade and try and get the enemies to do the dirty work, the constant running away is dumb as hell. It was awesome though because we had a mad phantom and a red phantom, so both would run at me and the purple would wait for the red to attack me then just gently caress them up entirely.

Nobody has agreed yet. If it's anything like Bloodborne, nobody will ever agree. Long story short, 120 is active for duels, so you're safe if that's what you want to do.

Right now, the 80, 100, and 120 are the ones people are pushing for. There's an active 120 dueling scene, but apparently it's harder to invade (either with the Red Eye Orb or an auto-invade covenant) at that level, which is why there are people who want 100, where you can invade down to people in late NG or early NG+. Meanwhile, people who want 80 want it because that's around where people are ending their NG playthroughs.

Most of the arguments for 120 focus around allowing mages to, y'know, exist, and all the 80/100 supporters have all the "gently caress mages" counterarguments you'd expect.

DS3's pacing starts linear, then has a branching path like the DS1 Bells, goes back to linear for 1.5 areas, branches again like an entire second set of Bells, and then there's a linear path to the end. There are several extensive optional areas that show up as well, although the biggest of them are after the branches resolve.

Additionally, the area you're in now is actually mostly optional and you can pass right through it without even finding the boss. You shouldn't do that though, because exploration will be rewarded.

You aren't very far in yet. You'll get a branch after the Undead Settlement, and then another one after you do both of those branching paths, and then access to several optional areas.

It's also less linear than Bloodborne, which never really lets you branch the critical path at all. It has a few optional areas (Hemwick Charnel Lane, Nightmare Frontier, Castle Cainhurst) but the main path of the game is fully linear, unlike DS3.

I could probably count the number of times I've invaded a lone host on one hand. They tend to actually fight though, which is more fun than people fleeing back to whatever bonfire when even one of their multiple phantoms who are playing the game for them is defeated.

I wanna say the issue in DS1 is that it didn't show up nearly as hosed up for other players sadly, just maybe a little oversized or deformed. With 3 everyone gets to bask in your Zardoz-ian glory.

There really aren't that many comparatively. There are 57 bonfires in the whole game. If you discount the ones that spawn from bosses which are essentially useless save for one, there's 38, which is exactly the number Dark Souls 1 has.

edit: Dark Souls 2 has way more, clocking in at almost 60 without even considering the DLC.

The dragonslayer armor bonfire is the one I was speaking of that serves a purpose. Specifically, it's how you get to the boss of the next area the fastest, because the Archives bonfire is a minute or so of running farther away.

Nope! I invaded a streamer once while looking like that, and despite being black and red, all of my facial features were displayed for the other guy perfectly. :D

The DS2 faces were much harder to warp, and trying to change them in Cheat Engine just wouldn't save so it ended up being fruitless no matter what I did.

It wasn't added just for that, all bosses get a bonfire, it's a rule. The vast majority of them don't serve any purpose and are probably just there in case you eat poo poo after the boss dies but before you get to the next one and need to go back. The Dancer bonfire is a good example of that, because the closest non-boss bonfire before the Lothric Castle one (which has enemies between you and it) is The Tower On The Wall and that's a pain in the rear end. The dragonslayer armor one just happens to have a tertiary use.

I can't bring myself to care about the Dark Souls 3 bonfire placement thing because, for the most part, it affects absolutely nothing about the level design or gameplay. Any time there are two bonfires super close together, it's entirely inconsequential. This is DS3's version of the Earthen Peak elevator, isn't it?

(Actually I'm kinda pissed off about the Irithyll Dungeon bonfire being as close to the Distant Manor one as it is, because it's very possible to light it before you meet Siegward in the Irithyll kitchen and permanently gently caress up his quest and probably Greirat's too :v:)

I don't really care, it just seemed to me a sign, combined with the leaks and early promotional art, that you had to make your own bonfires at one point in development and they cut it and just activated all of them.

That probably is the case, and I think that would've been more interesting as a mechanic than just having them all be active. One thing I liked about Dark Souls 1 is that not all of the bonfires were warp-able, so you had to pick which one you didn't mind running from to wherever you were going.

Ugh. I would make another character and try the different level ranges before you decide which one you want to be in. I was at 110 very comfortable and nice. Good duels, good invasions, good coop, everyone seems to know what they are doing for the most part with exceptions. Then I decided to move up to 120 since that's the popular one, thinking it won't be that big of a difference. Man, it's like night and day, maybe it's just me but after spending X amount of time at 110, 120 seemed like stumbling into a mental institution. I'll give it another chance, but I don't like it at all and wish I'd stay lower because it seems like everyone that's playing Souls for the first time read that 120 is the place to be online and that's all I ever queue into.

So, short answer there is no "agreed" meta yet and YMMV. Some will swear by 120 since that's their kind of crowd, some are saying 100, plenty are doing low level pvp almost exclusively from what I heard. But it's abundantly clear that (at least for now,) lower = better and I am going to have to make a low SL run through on another character to have any real fun.
