For no particular reason other than it seemed like a really cool thing to do. I remember thinking how attractive the resulting ball of copper was. I was drawn to it. It was particularly satisfying to roll it around on my hands. Maybe I had a copper deficiency and my body was trying to absorb it? lmao

Kickstarter idea: mix water and cornstarch and food coloring and put it in little tiny jars for your desk that I charge 15 bucks a pop for as a "self contained non Newtonian fluid for your desk at home or at work." just gotta come up with a catchy name

Not just engineers, I see woodworkers and machinists and mechanics and pretty much everyone who works on things have some sort of weird desk ornament from either scrap or some really crazy thing they ran into. It's like the people buying that wan't to come across as having some sort of skill and pretend they made this machined paperweight without actually having to take the effort to learn to make those 'well machined objects of art' or whatever the new phrase is.

Noria is a small window aircon unit that for some reason has started hitting advertising already. Seems kinda neat, it is small and quiet, however as the comments proceed the model only works in horizontal installations.

Would be nice if you had multiple window aircon units for them to integrate into Nest. I have a hunch that Nest being Nest you would need a dedicated Nest for each aircon.

i got this thing today: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tio/tio-save-the-world-twice-a-day?ref=nav_search seemed pretty cool when i ordered it but then i realized you can just get wooden toothbrushes that use zero plastic. anyway it was 7 euros iirc if i know one thing from Consumer Reports buyers guides, its that air conditioners need a bunch of space to be good. maybe they've cracked the problem, but maybe they've also just made a small air conditioner with poor output.

MrMoo posted:Noria is a small window aircon unit that for some reason has started hitting advertising already. Seems kinda neat, it is small and quiet, however as the comments proceed the model only works in horizontal installations. At $400 it doesn't seem too out there if the specs are honest, as a comparable unit for $140 does 150 instead of 160 sq ft, 4.8A instead of 4A, 5000BTU vs 5000BTU, 39 lbs vs 30 lbs and a few other details. It seems off somehow, but possibly the change in refrigerant and a probable change in compressor and all other parts might drop off 9lbs and .8A draw and still keep the same specs at a smaller size, but all modern small aircons use the same refrigerant they are using. Smaller unit means smaller evap and condenser too, so it seems like it either will have to somehow move a lot of air to make up for that and do it quietly, or they are exaggerating their specs. Only major thing they didn't seem to address is the fact it seems to lack a drain hose or spot for one and will just dribble water down the outside of your house, but they don't seem to have exaggerated anything too crazily, even if it's a lot for a bottom end performance window aircon. At their price, a ductless unit may just be better, even if they did make the improvements they claim, they may have priced themselves out of their market.
