Anyone ever had these in their school computers?

They always sucked and with a full class of them going off it sure was annoying.

Typing that reminded me of lusting over a Soundblaster Extigy.

Unrelated there was -the- .wav repository website late 90s and beyond. I thought it was soundwav.com but that's some app site. Movie, TV shows and other short sound files in wav format. Anyone remember that?

Also there was a time it was really difficult to find Simpsons sound files. I guess a small internet with zealous copyright enforcement. This was pre YouTube of course. Anyway I recall the only "I was saying boourns" wav I could find was some little kid saying it which was hilarious in itself.

I remember the Donald Duck sex .wav was really popular in like 1995.

The first thing that comes to mind on the topic of 90's .wav repositories is fart.com.

Remember fart.com?

duckjob.wav

I think that was the most memorable of all the .wav files people spammed on mIRC. The only other one I can ever remember vaguely is something like "don't make me get medieval on your behind". I was surprised this stuff wasn't still in the mIRC folder on my old PC, I must have gotten sick of it and deleted the .wav files and turned off the "automatically DCC request .wav files you don't have when people play them" thing.

pretty sure it has already been brought up in this thread but i remember being like 12 and installing winamp on the family PC (located centrally of course in the spot you would put such an expensive piece of brand new technology - the kitchen) and playing the intro file inadvertently for the first time while my dad was around and i was like wtf and he was like wtf and i was afraid he would get mad at me cause i wasnt supposed to be involved with swearing and the like at that age but i remember he just looked genuienly puzzled and said "did that guy just say something about whipping llama rear end?" then he just walked out of the room like maybe he thought he was hearing things

I worked in a university late last century and someone ran some .exe file a friend had sent him (simple times!) and it was the one that said "HEY EVERYONE, I'M LOOKING AT PORNO!" One woman said how offensive this was and it shouldn't be taken as a joke because if someone was looking at porno at work that would be degrading to women and make an uncomfortable workplace etc. Anyway you know this wasn't a mechanic's workshop with a nudie calendar up on the wall or anything, this was a bunch of professionals (and then me) going about our business, but anyway let this be a lesson to all of you to not run .exe files that people send you!

Did anyone else play DX-BALL 2 a whole lot? It's not like there weren't lots of other Breakout-like games but it was cool with all the powerups and it looked pretty.

Ah, the days when you'd download one song at a time instead of a whole album. Also, the name of the song was what the person guessed it was. You'd get things on limewire like "Green Day - Paranoia" because everyone assumed the name of the song was Paranoia and no one had heard of Harvey Danger so it was probably Green Day that played it.

iirc there was a web-based version of this that you could link someone to. i think i already told a story about it in this thread where someone got it going real good at my high school and the only way to stop it was to pull the plug from the wall

My dad was pretty indifferent to our computer.

My friends dad though treated theirs like it was the cure for cancer. We changed some settings to get more high memory for a game, and he flipped out on us like we were going to destroy the thing. Like, his brain seriously broke and he went completely psycho, I thought my friend was probably going to take a beating once I had left.

I recall some LucasArts Star Wars games had a TIE fighter sound to test your stereo settings and the Yub Yub song to test your music.

Also I recall Windows 98 actually paused when sound was playing on a prompt. The result was you'd cause some headaches by putting on the Imperial March into a standard alert sound. Three minutes of inactivity as Windows calmly waited for it to end. And it'd be near impossible to kill as you couldn't even get into Task Manager to force close explorer.

I hated when Windows shutdown had to be delayed to play the shutdown sound, but I had recorded some not-all-that-short bit of The Simpsons using a VCR connected to a stereo connected via a long cable to my Sound Blaster using either the Sound Recorded or GoldWave on my Windows 3.1 machine and since I'd gone to all that trouble I sat through it every time. Of course now most OSes take a long time to shut down anyway..

One of my friends once asked me to crop an entire guitar solo from an (iirc) AC/DC song and send it to her. I was like sure whatever and did a five second hackjob in Audacity, thinking it was going to be used for her phone ringtone or something.

Nope. She used it as an MSN Messenger notification sound.

Ripper has a pretty awesome sound test. Tie Fighter and Dark Forces both had the stereo test where you hear the Tie Fighter scream moving from side to side. None of this is on Youtubd and that makes me sad.
