Here's a weird one. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-04-05-coleco-chameleon-boss-i-am-officially-tabling-the-console-venture-for-good A guy who had the brilliant idea to make a 300 dollar cartridge based console in 2016 got scammed out of almost 8,000 dollars by a con man. It was going to be called the RetroVGS, and it was supposed to play SNES and Genesis cartridges at 1080p with only an HDMI out, with additional indie games to be programmed for it, without the ability to upgrade or patch the games. The cartridges were going to be cost almost 50 dollars, much, much more than the same game on Steam. But it was on a cartridge! They first tried to get a Kickstarter going, but Kickstarter requires a working prototype, so it was cancelled. They tried again with Indiegogo, but it fell 1,918,842 dollars short of their 2 million dollar goal. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/retro-vgs#/ After this they tried to piggy back on a cultural zeitgeist at the zenith of it's popularity by branding it the " Coleco Chameleon". The international holding company that owns the Colecovision name said this was fine as long as they didn't have to pay for anything. With Colecovision on board everything was starting to look up and they then tried to fund it themselves. They were contacted by a former engineer who claimed he could have a working prototype in 30 days for 4,000 dollars. The project lead (Mike Kennedy) apparently didn't think it was odd the the engineer ( one Sean Lee Robinson, who we'll get too in a minute) didn't have a bank account and needed all the checks given to him to be cashed with Mike present at Mike's bank. Kennedy gave Sean 3 seperate checks totaling 8,000 dollars. He was given explicit instructions by Sean not to let anyone photograph or even view the back of his prototype. It was playing SNES games on a CRT monitor, which was odd because it was supposed to only have an HDMI out. A few people at the Toy Fair were not impressed, and claimed they didn't even know if the prototype was even plugged in, so Mike allowed them to photo the back of the console to prove it was indeed plugged in and running. Some people who saw it immediately called bullshit. Turns out the "prototype" was just an SNES motherboard shoved inside an Atari Jaguar shell running a flashdrive to emulate old SNES games. https://twitter.com/frankcifaldi/status/699662592218787841?ref_src=twsrc^tfw After a few days of speculation the designers released a picture of a clear version of the console to show how it was all new hardware and not just some SNES guts. This was a bad idea as the hardware was just a PC capture card, once again shoved inside a Jaguar shell. Turns out Sean Robinson was a well known scammer who had been selling bunk MAME boards to people for the past 15 years. He has been charged 7 times with Grand Theft and spent a year in prison . http://www.megalextoria.com/forum2/index.php?t=msg&goto=297838& https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rec.games.video.arcade.collecting/3GHJlQ2mErk When all this came to light Coleco said " we can't allow the hallowed name of Colecovision to be sullied by this failure" and announced they were withdrawing their name and cancelling any association they had with the project. It was announced today that the project was officially over. Your Gay Uncle has a new favorite as of 23:13 on May 3, 2016 |

Why in the gently caress do people want an exact thing that already exists, but willing to pay several times more for it? If you want to play Nintendo games, play them on actual Nintendo? Or Steam? Or emulator? I don't understand

Well jokes on you because the cartridge will only grow in value as collectors snatch them up, making them very rare!

I'm flabbergasted that people would donate $81,158 to that. I mean poo poo, even loving Star Citizen is at least a new thing, in concept.

Really every time someone online uses the word female I just have to think of Quark from DS9 as well. The tone of it is always just so bitter. Although to be fair Quark became a lot more decent as the show went on and his mother did a lot to reform Ferengi society as a whole. Christ, at their worst I think even the Ferengi would scratch their heads at how misogynist and hateful red pillers and their ilk are.

Whenever it's used as a noun and not an adjective you can be pretty damned certain it's meant to be demeaning.

I one had some milgoon argue that "females" isn't demeaning because that's how they're officially referred to in the military. Yep, put me in my place.
