i like a ton of gervais's stuff, but his films are not any of them Foreign Correspondents is just comedy death - it's so horrendously, uncompromisingly, completely and totally poo poo.

A MIRACLE posted:Ricky Gervais is terrible and I don't understand why people find him entertaining He was really good in the Office and Extras. He's insufferable when he's convinced of his genius and just looking to show you how great and talented he is and that you should totally like him. Honestly, the Invention of Lying may be one of the worst films I've ever seen. It takes a really clever concept that if pulled off, could be hilarious, and squanders it. It gives us a society where everybody can only tell the truth, which means that people are just absolutely terrible to each other because apparently, in this world, nobody has a filter either. Just got to say everything. And then it decides that it wants to be a religious satire, because after inventing lying, he invents God. And then the rest of the film is dedicated to basically just being "Hahaha, God is a lie. You believe in an invisible man in the sky." But it never really goes beyond that. It's just content to say "God is a lie, sky wizard, lol" and think that's enough. The problem is he wants to do daring work like Monty Python did with stuff like Life of Brian. But the key distinction was that Monty Python understood what they were satirizing and writing about. His movie came across mean spirited because he clearly didn't have an appreciation for why people might believe that there is a god, nor did he have anything to say beyond "It's a lie!" Where as Python were making fun of political groups, how people practice religion, how people miss the point and hear what they want to hear, and even find a way to make crucifixion funny.

it's not so much the anti-theism of The Invention of Lying as it is the fact that the movie's melodramatic plot circles around the notion that, basically, a world in which everybody tells the truth is the world we already have, but the truth is that the world is full of idiotic notions we take as 'truths' merely because 'that's what the man in the sky wants' or 'because that's what history says' or 'because that's what my parents say.' where it fucks up is by analogizing a fat, unsuccessful, self-professed loser and liar not being able to get a hot girlfriend because of nazism. it's just delusional narcissism that of course criticizes religion, but doesn't actually have the balls to also criticize vapid, vague notions of 'spiritualism' or 'everybody's beautiful' and that crap, since that's actually much closer to what gervais espouses. it's like Dogma.

I didn't mind The Invention of Lying too much, but it had such a weird turn of events in the end. The whole movie I'm thinking clearly Gervais will come to his senses so to speak and realize that his dream girl, Jennifer Garner, is a total oval office, and that he deserves better than her. But nope, it ends with "HA HA, NOPE, I married this giant oval office of a woman! I WIN!" I mean, really?

On the subject of cancelled HBO shows to finally get around to watching, I just started watching Hung and reading the synopsis makes it sound like it's going to be really dirty ala Californication but it's not. I'm 4 episodes in and so far it's a fairly charming show, although maybe a little predictable and cliche. I mean, there is talk of rear end in a top hat licking and big dicks, but it's not all T&A like I assumed it would be. Streaming free on Amazon prime.

If you are into american industrial history, environmental issues, native american rights, eating salmon, or good documentaries, you should check out DamNation https://www.netflix.com/title/70305212 on netflix or hulu etc.. Did you know there are 75,000 dams in the US, half of which were built in a 20 year period, and around 1/3 of which that are illegally constructed, dangerously undermaintained, poorly constructed, or a mix of the three? I watched this one because I was doing a research project to write and encourage Congress to act to vote to pass some dam removals which I'm personally close to, but it's a really interesting documentary, and it also has some bitchin graffiti artists, and one of the most stomach-dropping guerilla film footage bits I've seen, from a guy who sneaks near a dam removal blasting area to film the thing being blown to bits. Talk about demolition porn!

I just binged Veep, and drat, what an amazing show. The only reason I got to it just now is their marketing is terrible, and they make the show look like the sitcommiest of sitcoms. I only dipped my toe in to see why it was getting so many accolades, despite commercials for it making it look terrible.

And I normally love Gillian Anderson but she seemed really wasted here. precision posted:Season 3 of The Fall should be out any day now, as they filmed it months ago. Veep is really good but the characters are more competent and the plots sometimes actually are about things that effect people outside that political world and it's oddly weaker for it. As a side note, I JUST realized like a week ago that the girl that plays Selena's top advisor on Veep is the girl from My Girl.

Just be prepared that Veep is a much slower version of The Thick of It. They're different beasts in a lot of more subtle ways, but the lack of a Malcolm type figure really changes the pace and intensity.

Holy moly Welcome to Leith is good. It's edited like a horror movie, musical cues and all. It almost reminded me of Evil Dead at some points. Very fitting for the subject matter. Also holy moly is it depressing.

The main character and his family all go through growth and change, but his partner just stays the same and keeps making the same stupid mistakes over and over. On any other show she'd have bought a gun and solved her one and only problem the Goodfellas way. Too bad, as it was well written and interesting at first.

Just finished watching Band of Robbers. I've never read Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn and to be honest didn't even realize they were in the same stories together, but the movie was really good anyway. I don't know how I had never heard of it until it popped up in my face on Netflix.

The scene where they're talking to the kid and asking him if he knows any words that begin with N is one of the best scenes I've seen in a movie. In general I found Welcome to Leith to be an interesting movie. It tells a compelling story well and makes you question very basic things like free speech and how we treat people even when they are awful.

What's scary is that you can tell that Cobb despite his repugnant views is a smart guy, and could have actually been something if he'd gone down a different path. Instead we get a character basically from a horror movie

If it makes you feel better, according to the director at the Q+A I attended, Colby's standing in the white supremacist community was actually severely damaged by that whole "going on a talk show to prove he was 100% white" and he doesn't have the influence he once had.

Bug Bill Murray posted:haha I forgot about this scene, it was too perfect. I don't know. He seems more like somebody desperate to believe that he's smart or that he could have been somebody. His evidence for being smart is that he did well in school and that the army told him he could have been in the CIA or whatever, and he had an excuse ready for every turn in his life that didn't turn out. He seems like a pathetic nobody grasping for anything that would make him feel powerful or important, including talking up how his dad was a 33rd degree mason. And that is pretty much the only reason why people become nazis, I guess.

Gotta wonder where he got his money from. He himself said he spends 18 hours a day on message boards. he must be retired or have inherited it. I thought it was going to get more grim than it did. At the beginning they kind of play it up like the town will get overrun by nazis, but it just turns out that it it's him and his one slack jawed buddy. Not that it wouldn't have been a really lovely ordeal for the town anyways. The best is the one guy that actually moved out there for it. Him and his wife are just so astoundingly stupid. I like how he constantly plays the victim card after antagonizing people. Like, I think he actually did not understand the cause and effect there. They seemed to have the maturity of 13 year olds.
