I consider the schadenfreude when this happens to actually be a gameplay feature.

Something we found out while doing some weapon mods tests is that the hull/shield screen (both target and self) not only shows what status effects the ship is suffering/benefitting from but also their duration, and some status effect have a short invulnerability window where they cannot be refreshed.

Shown in this screenshot, you can see the targeted iCourier under effect of the Dispersal Field PAC mod: the Dispersal Field acts like Chaff for about 6 seconds, but the icon stays on for around 12. The effect of this do not stack and a hit while the icon is on does not refresh the effect.
You can tell how long before you can apply the effect by the presence of the icon, but there is another element that shows how long the ship is actually being affected by the mod: behind the icon there's a vertical bar that gets smaller until it reaches the bottom and it indicates when the target gimbals are being disrupted.

I've added a white indicator that shows the bar's progress: topmost image is right as the ship is being hit, middle image shows the bar a few seconds after the hit, the bottom image shows the icon flashing to indicate that the "grace period" is about to go away.

Of note is that some effects like Corrosive Shell for Multicannons do not have a grace period and the penalty is refreshed every time the target is hit by it again, and effects that apply immediately like Phasing Sequence for the Pulse Laser do show an icon but only to indicate what mod you are being hit by.

Going off of your photos it looks like those are affects displayed on a targeted ship..

..Is there a similar affect visible to the pilot of the ship when he/she has been hit by a weapon with an effect?

For those of you doing the Drugs to Skvortsov CG, here's a loop that's profitable in both directions (as long as supplies last):

63 G. Capricorni, Skvortov

Buy Tea around 1521
Sell Narcotics around 11642

Go to

SRS 2543, Dirac Terminal (20.97 LY, a few jumps, depending on your drive)

Sell Tea around 1789
Buy Narcotics around 9905

There's a chance Dirac will not have enough Narcotics to fill your hold (if your hold is larger than 100 tons), fill the rest of your hold with either Progenitor Cells or Reactive Armor, both of which should still be profitable.

Well the new patch made it tremendously easier to roll for Engineer mods by just providing them fish. My jump range is now 29.73 LY in a Cobra with a level 5 FSD range upgrade.

It's unfortunate that I'll never get to do this outside of beta, because the exorbitant cost requires too much effort to make it worth it.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

This game rocks on the Xbox. The visuals and sound effects are probably what does it. I got myself into a cobra mk III with c class modules after about an hour of RES sites. I hear horizons and everything might drop for the xbone in the next month or two and that's going to rock.

How does this power play stuff work and how do I get involved in it? What are conflict zones?

Is there a way to find which stations sell what modules?

I'm hoping for a single kind of do all ship that I can long range explore (want to see earth and some of those nebulas) and do combat in. Is that the cobra or is there something better? I got an eagle too, which is really fun to fly. I probably won't do any trading.

Don't. Powerplay is garbage, and conflict zones are pretty bad too. Nav beacons and resource extraction sites give you just as much fighting for a lot less trouble.

In terms of "can do everything, including combat", the Cobra III is the best you'll get. Most ships are better at one thing or another, at least to the point of being either "combat" or "noncombat" - multipurpose ships tend to be distinctly worse at combat, and combat ships tend to be distinctly worse at non-combat. There's nothing to shoot at when you go exploring anyway, and explorers usually go unarmed to save weight.

The Asp Explorer is the premier exploration ship, which is also pretty solid at trading and okay at combat, but if you give up on the combat requirement then the Type-6 is almost as good, and the Hauler makes a surprisingly good explorer for its cost.

With a small caveat that CZs are more consistent about giving you higher ranked enemies to fight to grind up your own combat rank more quickly.

But otherwise you probably care first about getting paid, in which case they're worse than the alternatives.

If missions were guaranteed to give you so much as +1%, no more, no less, to the relevant pilot's rating, it would be a huge deal.

As it is, taking a combat mission can do gently caress all for your combat rating.

I'm sure Official Forums people would flip their poo poo over Pilot's federation missions asking for Pilot's federation pilots effecting your Pilot's federation Ranking, though. Even without the prospect of stacking.

Though it's that stacking thing that makes me sadly understand why we'll probably never see it :sigh:

The Python is another Can-Do-Everything ship. It's actually one of the best trading ships because it can hold the most while still fitting on a medium docking pad, which means it can still dock at outposts. It packs 3 Large hardpoints and 2 Mediums, giving it the most firepower you can get aside from the big 3C ships (Corvette, Cutter, and 'Conda). It's fairly maneuverable as well, but not terribly fast. It has decent range too. The only downside is that it's pretty expensive. You'll need around a hundred million credits just to fit it with A class thrusters, powerplant, shield, FSD and Distributor. So add on a few more million for weapons and internals.

No Muscles For The Majority
The Viper IV is an alternative to the Cobra. It's much more versatile and has better jump range than you'd expect from a successor to a dedicated combat ship.

Some good info, and videos inside.

quote:

From the desk of lead designer Sandro Sammarco:

"There’s been lots of great feedback in the Beta so far! Because of it, we’ve already been able to make a bunch of improvements:

Diminishing returns for heat delivery weapons: turns out heat attacks were just too brutal (victims were getting thousands of times hotter than their ship could handle), so we’ve altered the way that weapons push heat onto a target. Now, the hotter a ship gets, the less effective additional heat becomes. This means that although heat weapons can still cook ships very effectively, the target has a fighting chance if they can avoid attacks or pop heat sinks, and ship total heat will never rise too high above the threshold for taking hull damage. Incidentally, we’re also going to improve the Retributor Powerplay weapon, to bring it in line with experimental effects that deal heat damage – it will now be more effective, as it should be (even more so if you load for bear with the thermal shock experimental effect).

Improved Cannons: these weapons had started to look a little dated, especially with all the fancy new modules making ships more resilient. So we’ve made them a tad better: their shells are faster, have no damage fall off over range, increased their ability to overcome hardness so they lose less damage when attacking large ships and have a better chance to penetrate through to attack modules. These changes should help cannons find their place in the pantheon of kinetic weapons: “hard hitters”, alongside “hosing” multi-cannons and “shotgun” fragmentation cannons.

We’ve softened the feedback cascade experimental effect for railguns: they will now *only* prevent deploying shield cells from regenerating shields (heat from the cell still gets applied!) and deal some of their damage directly to all cell banks that are currently deploying cells. Still rather effective, then!

Missiles have been improved throughout the Beta: they do a little more damage, shields are a little less resistant to them, seekers are better at tracking, we’ve increased their health a little and we fixed a bug that was placing blast radii at the wrong point. They are now the premium method of applying damage to external modules such as drives and weapons; just remember to use subsystem targeting to increase the chance of hitting the modules you want to destroy.

Turrets are improved: we’ve increased their damage and rate of fire a little so that they now fit more appropriately with damage progression between gimbal and fixed weapons, which should make them more viable for large ships.

We’ve added the ability to interrogate materials in recipes: now correctly called blueprints! When looking at materials in the interface, you can now get a description, which includes hints on where to look and what activities to try to nab them.

We’ve made ice mining more profitable: by increasing the chance of rarer resources being generated. Nom, nom, nom.

And there’s more to come:

We’re updating the crafting process to bias values towards better results, especially when experimental effects are generated, the idea being that these upgrades are supposed to be just that – upgrades!

We’re going to add additional methods of reputation increase for Engineers, using specialised markets, exploration data and bounty claims, so when the update goes live, Commanders will have more ways to get into the Engineers’ good books.

Along with this, we’ll also be removing some of the lower ranked materials, allowing the remaining ones to be used in more recipes, so that across the board you’ll need to collect fewer types to start crafting upgrades.

None of these changes would have likely happened without all the feedback that the brave Beta Commanders have been providing us with, so lots of thanks and love to them. Let the testing continue, for there’s surely more changes to come!"

RES farming is a pretty steady money earner.

Also yes, you can just complete Robigo shadow deliveries if you don't mind all the jumping in a maxed out Asp Explorer.

Once this new content update happens we may just be able to farm cash by completing missions anywhere that scale with rank. That's the dream anyway.
