Sorta weird that so many died the year they invaded Ukraine, since I doubt russian generals leads from the front, especially when they are supposed not to be there. Though a fair number shot themselves.

What's even weirder is Kremlin's explanation:

While the photos look as if they could have been taken from a domination fetish site, a government source in Moscow told the Sun that they were taken to highlight the issue of domestic violence.

Why yes, I'm sure that campaign worked as planned...

Post-Soviet shitholes use Eurovision as a nationalistic dickwaving opportunity. Since post-Soviet Russia specifically is the stronkest post-Soviet nation, all other nations must bow before post-Soviet Russia's manly and stronk Eurovision contestant.

They have a severe inferiority complex so anything that could reflect badly on Russia in any way has to be explained away, justified or denied. I think most of the EE countries are like that, Poland certainly is.

Apropos of Eurovision let's all take a moment to remember the glorious craziness of the best Eurovision performance ever:

The Daily Hail article of course doesn't say more than that it's a government official. Eurovision is a public broadcasting alliance so it might just be the Russian public broadcasting company's representative commenting when asked. OTOH Russian media is tightly controlled by the government and they also try to control international perception of the country (see the troll factories) so it'd fit the government's interests.

A whole lot because the whole oligarchy is built around him, Russian political institutions are completely unfunctional. He's the man of the security apparatus and the military which is the most powerful political wing in Russia. There is little free press (just a few days ago the big fairly-independent run by an oligarch news source RBK had their whole team axed for investigations into corruption) and the propaganda is effectively playing on the Russian siege mentality and blaming economic issues on external enemies. Most importantly there doesn't seem to be a mass of pissed off young people that see through the BS and have nothing to lose.

As a Baltic native Russian speaker I just want to see Russia keep getting defanged economically, so that they don't get the great idea to attack us, and see where the numerous socio-demographic problems lead them (ISIS in Central Asia, neoliberal destruction of welfare and education, the Great Internet Firewall 2, etc)

Admittedly I have a small sample size to work with, but generally speaking all of the Russians I have spoken know things are poo poo and wish it were different. However they know that things right now are absolutely stacked against them and any singular action they take is doomed to fail so why bother? такова жизн...

Don't lose hope! The collapse of the Russian economy is still well underway:

http://www.investopedia.com/articles/active-trading/020215/falling-oil-prices-could-bankrupt-these-countries.asp

quote:

Russia needs the price of oil to be $98 or higher in order to produce it at a profit, and its economy, along with the value of the ruble, have been hit hard as a result. Over $150 billion has been lost in GDP to the low price of oil, and many fear that Russia may yet again default.

On the other hand: The world bank expects a contraction of the Russian economy of 1.6% for this year and a return to growth around 1.1% for 2017.

Thing worth keeping in mind, though, is that you are (iirc) in the second richest city in Russia, which is often referred to by Russians everywhere as city of culture. Difference between St. Petersburg/Moscow and pretty much everything else in Russia is enormous.

That is pure loving horseshit. Russia is turning profit even now, even if the price falls below $40. It's just not much profit, and it's definitely not sustaining their economy like it's supposed to.

I think what they meant to say, is that Russia needs oil to be 98 a barrel to meet federal revenue targets.
