That looks pretty great actually! Can't wait for the game to show up! Without the Barzam I'd probably go with the Kampfer or Jagd Doga head. Or the GN-X.

Just finished 08th MS Team, Norris is such a cool guy. Is there some sort of rule that all the cool people have to pilot goufs or something?
That series was really good. Is there any story behind Last Resort? It seem really tacked on, I am not complaining though because 11 wrap things up, it just felt like a DVD bonus feature or something.

Now on to War in the Pocket.

Yeah it's a weird tacked on thing that isn't really necessary.

It had some production troubles. The original director died like halfway through the series, so the release of the episodes slowed way down after that. Presumably that explains some of the weirdness with the romance plot and the out-of-place ending.

Episode 12 really has nothing to do with the rest of the series except to poo poo on Michel (which is always good because gently caress Michel) and reverse Shiro's alleged death.

Norris vs the 08th team has to be one of the best mech fights ever. I love how it drives home the normalness of shiro & co., Shiro is a good pilot but he's nothing against an actual ace. Also the gouf custom rules.

Those are always my favourite kind of fights; where its not about finishing moves and super-weapons, just using a handful of tools/weapons effectively and wearing them down one weapon loss or hit at a time. Like the Kampher Amazing and GM Sniper fight in BF.

Someone did a pretty good analysis of the Gouf vs 08th MS Team fight earlier in the thread talking about how it's actually a really lovely fight choreographically, it's just very well animated. Everything Norris does is reliant on the 08th MS Team being incompetent beyond all measure, like him standing completely still in open ground and only being shot at once, and Shiro managing to miss by a margin of roughly five streets away with random machine gun fire.

I found that one of the more believable aspects of the fight, personally. Shiro was moving, couldn't brace himself or aim properly or even stabilize his view on his enemy, and frankly that's not a recipe for hitting anything

To be fair he was coming down a side of a building and the team hasn't met anybody that could move that fast or with that much experience before. Most of the time they are fighting peer level dudes with a plan or in ambush. Whenever they get into an unplanned skirmish they get pretty damaged.

They were covering the Guntanks, and Norris's first action was to ambush one by dropping through a building on top of it.

Analyze as you will. Posturing has always been part of Gundam fight scenes. I do like how halfway through the fight Shiro loses his poo poo and just starts screaming so loud his voice breaks.

Only one or two, but the fight itself is actually like 60% cockpit monologues so that accounts for a lot of action.

It worked really well. In the beginning, dudes just got loving annihilated by the sniper cannon. They couldn't get at it, they couldn't even see it, and one by one they just got destroyed by it. Then the Gundam comes out, and the Zeon guys start getting annihilated by it. They can see it, it's right there in front of them, but then they're just dead, and the Gundam is off to murder their friends. It really got across a feeling of complete helplessness for both sides

one of the best things about the show. I'm a bit confused as to how certain things happened though. Like the gundam got it's head blown off and all of sudden it's just floating around outside the colony in the last episode.

But CHRIST does the ridiculous tech developments in gundam side stories always piss me off. This was no exception.

No, he had a chuckle to himself while getting a read on where the enemy's positions were, from a high vantage point where he couldn't be shot at easily (one of them explicitly stating Norris was in his blind spot). And then he went to work.

Was there really that much exotic tech in Thunderbolt? Everything in it seemed pretty much One Year War standard, it's just that individual suits piled on a lot at once (because the mission profile involved extended patrols in ludicrously hostile territory with a high chance of equipment malfunction). Even the Reuse [P] Device makes sense as one of the stranger side-projects in the early days of psycommu development.

Karen misses her shot, Norris drops through the building. Sanders almost hits him on the way down, misses and guntank 1 is destroyed.

Sanders starts moving towards karens position. Norris enters the street and throws up a smokescreen to confuse Karen. Disables her beam rifle and knocks her into a wall and then kills guntank 2. Sanders misses his shot again and Norris breaks for the overpass.

Sanders stays to help Karen, while elodore relays coordinates to guntank 3 to take out the overpass. Shiro moves to intercept Norris after guntank 3 takes out the road. The gouf tears down the road and rattles Shiro who starts fighting recklessly as he's now on the back foot. Does a wall slide and throws himself in front of the guntank.

Sanders and Karen cover the guntank retreat while Shiro occupies Norris. Gets disabled in the process and Norris uses him as a shield. Norris could take them all quickly but he needs to stall them long enough for the ship to evacuate, so he toys with them. But then Shiro loses it and gets the drop on Norris who retreats. Then he takes out the gouf while the two rx-79s escort the guntank, but Norris gets an angle on it and takes the tank out.

I don't really see how that makes the 08th team stupid, they were just heavily outmatched.

I don't have enough time to break down the whole fight right now since I'm phoneposting at a red light, but while you can sort of justify everyone's actions that doesn't address the key issue with the fight, that the choreography is totally hosed and nothing makes any sense spatially. Like, for fucks sake, there's a key point in the fight where a guntank appears out of nowhere just so shiro can dramatically do a secret service dive in front of it, even though it visibly was not there one cut ago and it's presence in that part of the city makes no sense.

Arc Hammer

I figured the guntank had moved forward for direct fire against the overpass and when Shiro was forced back by Norris, they pushed closer to the guntanks position.

It was more all the stuff like missles pods and strapped on guns and huge beam cannons strapped to the gundam in thunderbolt that just seemed out of place. Nothing in the OYW seems to have stuff like that.

Also having multiple gundams ruins a key plot point of the original series. Zeon was afraid of this single protype and it was important for the war effort. Having multiple gundams results in it making no sense why Zeon was obsessed with destroying the rx-78. Plus, all the side story gundams have better gimmicks than the rx-78. How does that make sense?

Edit- Also while I think the thunderbolt looks cool, why in the world would the federation waste having such a top of the line suit by using it in some strategically useless junk heap?

I think it's part of the reason so many side stories are in the final weeks of the war. The Gundam has been tearing through zeon forces for months but once the mass production gm suits and other prototype Gundam units seal zeon's fate. The gm is almost as good as the rx-78 which was outdated before the war even ended, so production of rx-79/79 variants would not have been much more expensive for the federation

Because it wasn't Gundam they were afraid of, it was Gundam and it's murderbeast of a pilot who kept having the best of what they had thrown at him and turning it all in to neatly sliced stacks. Even if you're pumping out better and more terrifying Gundams, they're not in Amuro's hands. Basically the nightmare was Amuro getting a new, better gundam, so it's either get rid of Amuro or keep him from getting the Alex/G-3/Full Armor/Whatever.
