The fact Toma is the most popular over there baffles me. Is there something I don't get about the target audience? I mean, there's liking bad boys, and then there's liking crazy unhinged psychos. It just doesn't make sense.

Any recommendations on route order? I've seen A B C D recommended, and C and D will definitely make zero sense without A and B, but I think I'd recommend A B D C. The weakest route is probably D unless you enjoy gun porn or Matrix fanfiction, and after playing through C (my favorite by a long shot) there's no suspense in the story any more. It's like the ending for C kind of spoils what happens in D, but I don't think it's the other way around? might have to check. For the prime routes I don't think order matters really, or at least nowhere near as much as the main story. Did you start with A the first time around? It's a pretty mediocre start until Babylon shows up but even then the lead character isn't great. I personally started with B which was much more interesting so I was willing to tolerate high school stuff in A a bit. Although if you play A first, you get to see some of the side cast presented in a very different way than how they're introduced in B, and perceiving characters differently is a core part of the narrative I guess, so the VN as a whole probably flows better with A first.

I haven't finished it due to stuff as I'm doing a lot of final project stuff right now, but I've gone through most of route A and it was fantastic. Lot's of suspense, mystery, and drama. From what I've heard, you definitely should start with route A.

I think it's worth it. It's my first time through Higurashi, and the space between the chapters has actually been what's let me actually keep pace with it compared to Umineko. With this, it's an 8 hour chunk every few months broken up quite nicely. Unfortunately with Umineko, I got halfway through chapter 3 and now feel no great urge to pick up in the middle of a story. It's also easier to talk about when its only up to a certain point.

PS3 sprites are the best way to go IMO, which you can get here (along with a voices patch if you so desire): https://github.com/higurashi-mod/ The new Steam sprites are better than the originals but they still kind of suck. The PS3 ones are kind of generic but they're at least inoffensive all told.

Oh hey, I didn't know this topic existed. I love VNs and since I just finished Root Double a few days ago I wanted to find somewhere to talk about it. In general I was a pretty big fan. That said the first route was also the best; it's hard for the game to top the nonstop suspense and mystery in Route A. The protagonist of Route B was also not all that good. Lastly the last route dragged on a little with the extended flashbacks. This was necessary for some characters, but the RAM section for Ena and Louise seemed unnecessary. The SSS mechanic was a novel way to play the game, but I feel like how you're supposed to interpret a high Senses value vs a low one got fuzzy as the game progressed. I used a guide, and the bad endings are very forgiving in terms of how to avoid them, so it didn't affect me much, but I see how it could be frustrating. That sounds like a lot of complaints, but the overall quality was still really high. The plot was very engaging and the last scene before the credits with Watase putting his ideals on the line to challenge Natsuhiko was a great way to end everything. I also liked how this game was a lot more grounded than Nakazawa's other works. The last VN I read that he was involved in was I/O. Talk about a huge shift! I imagine this is because he only came up with the concept for Root Double and it was written by a team under his supervision instead. You can recognize traces of his style; there's no shortage of philosophical and paranormal technobabble. But it never dives off the deep end, which I/O and Remember11 were very much guilty of. I was waiting for a big twist that never came, and really things were all the better for it. The characters were also well-written and complex. I think Watase was easily the most interesting, but I also like Ukita, Yuuri, and Subject N a lot. A very good read overall, perhaps a little worse than Ever17 in quality, which was my favorite Nakazawa VN. Now I have to find something else to read. I worry I've already read everything good though.

Am I just reading to much time travel stuff, or do VN writers really love to explain special relativity? Screenshot is from Island, made by the Front Wing. Seems like an anime and a western release of the game is in the works.

Schrodinger's Cat especially seems to inexplicably crop up all over the place. I have no idea if this is some cultural touchstone or what.

I don't like the route structure though, especially now I've gotten every ending for Route A and all the epilogue flags. It kinda feels like its finished but there was no closure at all. If it had flowed straight into B, then I feel the pacing wouldn't have been thrown off. Also I hated how every time you got a bad end you had to go through that long splash of "Game Over" and load back in. Bit too slow for my taste.

The murder mysteries and some of the background of the story can get pretty dark but Ange's journey of self-discovery in which she learns the magical power of believing that things are better than they seem and ignoring what people say about her family in favor of choosing to believe they were good, loving people which ultimately leads to her overcoming all the dark conspiracy theories, finding the strength to love and trust in her dead family and then spread the word about the magic of believing to the world seems pretty upbeat to me. The real bizarre thing about Umineko is that if you strip away all the BS red-herring stuff that didn't actually happen the actual real story is just about a girl whose family dies and then she goes around trying to find proof that the tabloids are wrong and they were good people and then when she can't actually find proof she decides to just believe they were good people for herself and ignore what the world says about them. That's the whole plot.
