It's probably some kind of subconscious racist thing but all of the indonesian/thai/south american/whatever brutal death and grind legit scares me like it all sound so vicious and intense compared to most American stuff.

nah, that's not racist, it's definitely a real thing. imo it's a combination of not having a pro studio to record in (so everything is lo-fi as gently caress), limited access to formal instrumental training (so bands play loving fast but the use of a metronome or click track is completely foreign to them, and as a result everything sounds super shaky and chaotic) and most importantly having a really really strong local scene where to stand out you have to be harder and more extreme than all the other motherfuckers you're competing with sadly i don't know many thai metal bands at all, the one i most like is melodius deite who sound like galneryus + dark moor + symphony x so... totally not the same thing

Like bands who would draw 2-300 people here would draw several hundred to a few thousand in Brazil or Argentina. I hear the metal scenes down there are pretty big and vibrant. I'm not really a big fan but there's a reason bands like Annihilator play only European festivals and do South America runs. It pays off.

The reason bands get huge crowds is because there are large scenes which don't get that many tours going through. I have seen some bands more in the last year than those cities will see in my lifetime. Large crowds do not also mean large money - most bands will modify their fee based on the economy of the area they are playing, and realistically, there is a cap on how much you can charge for a ticket (frequently they charge less than half the price a band might get in the USA). And of course, there's plenty of other reasons a band might want to spend some time losing sleep in South America.

From a dozen fly-in shows you can make as much if not more than you would trekking across a continent on your own for two months. But even that's kinda hit the saturation point and plenty of fests are shutting down since their margins are pretty small, even with corporate backing. i don't see what's so funny about it, meshuggah are about as atonal as you can get in metal and most djent really isn't yeah they play some chromatic progressions but you'll never see harmony or use of major keys (barring Straws Pulled At Random) overall, meshuggah are intentionally repetitive and purely rhythmic. i think "I" is the clearest example of this, like, that goddamn opening section where they sound like the CD is skipping. djent bands don't sound like that - not nearly as inhuman or cold or bleak. Really sad about Menza but I hear he was really into speed and stimulants for a long time. I remember photos from early to mid 2000's had him looking really run down. If I was Mustaine I'd be getting regular checkups on my heart and get really into aerobics.

Caught Megadeth at a fest last night, they put on an alright show. Did a moment of silence and Dave took a bit of a break to compose himself, it seemed. At the end he left with an "I love you" to everyone and it was p. heartfelt.
