so i've blown through a few bucks already on pacer because im bad at using it and holy poo poo there are a lot of documents on this case, but google yesterday threw a couple of shitfits and filed multiple motions of objection to block testimony from two of oracle's experts. google first claims that an apache exec cannot testify because it's all heresay. oracles response basically shits all over google because their objections don't actually fall under the scope of the rules they're claiming and he's in part rebutting testimony about apache from one of google's own witnesses. another big part of his testimony is about internal apache emails that say stuff like this:

quote:

“we are, in fact, infringing on the [Sun] copyright if we distribute something that has not passed the TCK and *we know that.* This makes us *already* doing illegal things (in fact, Android using Harmony code is illegal as well).” (Exhibit 1, TX 5046)

“the proposal...to release without a licensed TCK (and let Sun sue us) is a far greater breach of ASF principle...The idea of [Apache] condoning IP infringement would morally destroy the ASF long before a Sun court case actually put out of existence.”(Exhibit 2, TX 9200)

“what is Oracle[] going to do with 500 million java-powered cell phones? What is Oracle going to do about Android’s ripping off some of (now) their IP and getting away with it?” (Exhibit 3, TX 9201)

oracle has also submitted proposal summary judgement orders so the judge could just sign and wrap this up at any point.

is the idea that it saves you having to explicitly check types in the caller before you're able to use type-specific methods and fields? isn't catching an exception pretty slow? i feel like this is not something youd want to do all over the place.

it's not actually any slower than returning normally once the runtime notices that there are more exceptions being thrown. so it's not any worse than using tail call optimization and recursion instead of a for-loop

the jvm doesn't have tail-call optimization, like at all.

and i was under the impression that generating a stack trace was really expensive for the jvm

edit: this guy tested it with JMH, so everything was jitted properly, etc.

code:
Benchmark Mode Samples Mean Mean error Units
t.ExceptionTests.createNewNoFillStackTrace thrpt 10 12.328 0.061 ops/us
t.ExceptionTests.createNewNormalException thrpt 10 0.236 0.005 ops/us
t.ExceptionTests.createNewStringHolder thrpt 10 81.314 0.198 ops/us
t.ExceptionTests.throwCached thrpt 10 387.808 3.535 ops/us
t.ExceptionTests.throwNew thrpt 10 0.239 0.005 ops/us
t.ExceptionTests.throwNewNoFillStackTrace thrpt 10 12.165 0.066 ops/us
as you can see here, creating and throwing a normal exception is 345x more expensive than wrapping your return result in an object. Even if you create an exception that does not fill in the stack trace, it will be 6.5x slower for no real benefit. the guy really doesn't test catching and using the exception (he catches but does nothing with it, which i think the JVM optimizes away). i'm kinda tempted to use jmh to test catching too since i hear it invokes yet more performance penalties

I think both Android and Java SE are in evidence, I assume as a part of Oracle's case.

Alsup seemed pretty pissed about both Oracle and Google that they inflicted this PC on the jury, so it might be some kind of joint effort.

But the good news is that they managed to get *.java associated with notepad.exe on that PC.
