We laugh, but it worked for Howard when he redefined what the border of Australian territory was for boat arrivals.

Where'd this huge support come from? I know he was pretty popular before but outpolling a major party is a thing. What wasn't I paying attention to?

Dunno what the rest of his candidates are like but Xenophon has voted with the LNP a lot and apart from his hatred of pokies they'll probably just be like a party of wet libs.

Is there actually a party platform, or has Xenophon just put together a coalition of independents with unified branding?

Generally speaking, Xenophon's a right-winger with a particular focus on helping South Australia, which you might be aware is in kind of a poo poo state. He started off pushing on the pokies front, and that's still a big tentpole policy of his, so I imagine him getting a real, strong proper foothold on the national front is bad news for Crown et al. If you ever actually wanted a right-wing politician, he's your guy. More honest and supportive than the Liberals, that's for certain. He's filling two separate gaps in South Australian politics (actually standing up for the state, and being an actual conservative instead of just selling out everything under the sun for his mates), so he's very popular and actually going to do very well. I wouldn't put him over Labor on the ballot, but if I were voting in SA I'd be putting him as probably the highest right-wing politician.
