Yeah from what I've gathered from forum posts and interviews the stupidity is coming from a select number of higher level developers but Braben generally seems pretty cool.

Braben could easily use his CEO powers to cut down the grind if he wanted to, so ultimately yes it's his fault.

I'm a little confused at how prominent these engineer weapons are. How is it that so many NPCs from all walks of space-life have chummy relationships with engineers that they have ships equipped with this sort of stuff? How can these apparently single-person enterprises that are secretive and hard to find somehow able to supply so many ships with their weapons? With how many friends the engineers have (all the NPCs) you'd figure they themselves would be the powers in the galaxy. Who gives a poo poo about Hudson when you can get righteous weapons for doing favors for the engineers? How aren't theses weapon manufactures on their own merits with how popular their tweaks are with the NPCs at large?

Maybe its like Fallout 4's Unending weapons, there's a really rare engineer weapon that doesn't have a magazine and just spews out shots as fast as it can until you overheat/run dry. And AI don't give a gently caress about heat, ammo or energy sooooo.

The engineer materials grind is soul-crushing in its awfulness. It turns out that some components only drop from certain factions of ships, including the cops. Electrochemical Arrays only ever drop from System Authority ships and Security Firmware Patches are either very rare or only spawn from certain very specific data points. So if you want level 2-3 multicannon or pulse laser upgrades you have to be a cop killa. Good luck with that considering they tend to jump in with wings of 2+,

Ugh. At least there's now a genuine motivation to get player to player trading in the game. Hell, do it Guild Wars 1 style, where everything still goes through an NPC merchant and is traded for cash, but units sold vs units purchased by players is used to calculate the prices.

Space Skeleton posted:Space loot is so far adding a lot of extra enjoyment to every activity for me. Same, it's surprisingly fun collecting it all. I think it adds another layer of depth to the game world, and it's always nice getting extra rewards for destroying a ship or checking out a USS or POI. Now if only it didn't take an entire weekend of poopsocking for me to gather just half the materials for a single level-1 upgrade Also, the radio chatter and space traffic controllers are a really cool touch that has helped bring the world to life in a big way. Other cool things: direct routes between starts/stations/outposts are now called shipping lanes, the ability to scan nav beacons, the fact that missions now come from NPCs with a name and a face, etc. And of course the ability to upgrade things is nice (even if I'm not a huge fan of the RNG aspect and the inability to duplicate modules you like). It adds up to make a significant difference in how alive the game feels...much of it must have taken a relatively minimal effort to do though, unless the game engine/coding is amazingly slow to work with or something. But the broken/cheating NPCs and the constant grind are bullshit. I'm half impressed and half disappointed with the engineers update, i guess. MisterZimbu posted:I'm an idiot who accepted a trading mission instead of blowing stuff up (though to be fair it sounds like you really can't blow stuff up right now). I finally got back from my weeks long exploration trip to the North American, Elelphant Trunk, and NGC 7822 Nebulas. I loved the NGC 7822 nebula with its Type O blue-white stars and black holes. Here's an imgur album with some others. I was a little worried about the new cheating uber-NPC's getting back into the bubble, but fellow DF helped with an escort. Now, I'm not sure what to do in this game; seems like getting the engineer materials is a super grind, RES sites are unfun, and Robigo is done. I might do some missions to get into a icourier. Any suggestions?

Space Skeleton posted:She does the AI tactics, I don't think the plasma thing has anything to do with her. Yeah, the AI is good. It's the proliferation of top-tier upgrades (any upgrades should be somewhat rare on NPCs, and top-tier ones should be extra rare), the fact that NPCs don't get heat damage or run out of ammo, can jump magically far distances and always know where you are, etc. and the bugged weapons that are loving things up. Maybe they could decrease the number of elite NPCs too.

I've been cruising vertically up and I've found some wonderful places, but no really interesting star systems. It's just L, M and K out here, though I've passed a few giants. Some interesting planetary systems though, like one with a binary pair of gas giants, then a trinary trio. Out from the closest on the chart, they're ~2, ~1.5 and ~1 Jupiter mass a piece, which made it even better. Elsewhere, I found a binary pair of equal-sized moons orbiting about their own radius apart: Also a crater so deep it's positively got an atmosphere at the bottom of it.

That's actually a DBX, they changed the default paintjob this patch, I assume to better match its sibling. It looks pretty sharp, but no creamsicle anymore, so it's kind of a wash.
