I don't understand why airplane seats even recline anymore. The seats are small, uncomfortable, and packed as tight together as possible. It's not like there's any other consideration for comfort and any added comfort the recline might add is mitigated by the fact that the person behind you is going to become sad and/or hostile. I never bother with it.

Hey guys, our hospitals need $3.2b in repairs, we won't tell you which need how much though because it would give the contractors bidding on $100m worth of work an unfair advantage.

quote:

https://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2016/05/30/run-down-ontario-hospitals-need-287-million-in-renos-ndp-says.html

One hospital in Ontario is in such bad shape it has a $287-million to-do list, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says.

That figure came in a list the New Democrats got under a freedom-of-information request from the health ministry detailing $3.2 billion “deferred maintenance” at 148 hospitals across the province.

Names of the hospitals were blacked out.

“The government refuses to tell us which hospitals are in the worst shape,” Horwath said Monday, referring to the list.

“In fact, the government said that if they revealed the names of the hospitals, contractors could lose confidence that they would get paid.”

Health Minister Eric Hoskins said facilities with the highest need are aging “multi-site” hospitals that need to be replaced and defended his ministry’s decision not to release names “for good reason.”

“It would give contractors an unfair advantage in advance of their bid what the ministry or the hospital had estimated the cost of those repairs, renovations and improvements to be,” he told reporters.
...
The government has earmarked $100 million a year for maintenance and repairs, which can include new air conditioning systems, boilers and other equipment.

It’s also planning to spend $12 billion over the next 10 years to build new hospitals, said Hoskins, who also came under fire from Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown.
...
“Failing to do urgent repairs will only make it worse,” cautioned the NDP leader, who has criticized the government for tight hospital budgets that have led to the layoffs of 1,440 nurses since January 2015.

On the list of 148 hospitals obtained by the New Democrats, only six had no deferred maintenance needs. The others ranged from just $16,359 while most were between $1 million and $287 million.

Eight hospitals had needs above $100 million.

So Calgary is doing mandatory composting, green bin $6.50 a month, ok fine another tax but whatever keeping organic waste of of landfills is good.

But they decided that since they are rolling out green bins, they only need to pick up garbage (black bins) once every two weeks, without a reduction in cost to the citizens, great way to scam money out of people, hopefully they spend it right and give the rich people on the river some new pathways or flood mitigation prevention

They're also petitioning to get the green bin added to your property tax instead of the utility bill like the black and blue bins, only thing I can guess is they don't want people who don't pay attention to local politics to know they're getting a tax increase

Ottawa promised some silly amount of organic waste to its green bin contractor, and has had to pay penalties for failure to deliver it because rural folks don't need green bins to compost, and also urban dwellers are giant whiny babies who feast exclusively on durians and maggots, if their complaints about the program are to be believed.

This is only partially correct if I remember what I read correctly. The $6.50 per month cost of recycling only works if black bin pickup is cut in half. Otherwise, to maintain weekly black bin pickup and add in weekly green bins it would add something like $10+ a month in fees.

Lipstick Apathy
You only do garbage pickup once every two weeks because that's all you need to do it you're using the green bins. You're still going to have trucks come by every week.

I think it takes maaaaaaaybe three or four weeks for me to fill up my garbage can, but there are only three people living in my house and there are no babies. I imagine if you have a baby in diapers that would fill up way more quickly.

The green bin and recycling bins on the other hand will get taken out every week.

Then they can take it to the landfill themselves, or spend a bunch of time picking up rotting food in the alley. Or have the city do it because of neighbor complaints and bill them a couple hundred bucks. Calgary has been adjusting for several years now and I think the grace period has ended. The city is going to stop picking up loose bags, if they haven't already. And if you want to take stuff to the landfill yourself be prepared to pay through the nose. I think the minimum charge was $15 bucks last time I was there.

The enforcement of federal criminal law has always had this tension, because it's always been up to local police forces with local operational priorities (and the RCMP, but lol). When the dispensaries started exhibiting Starbucks Syndrome and popping up on every corner to step on the toes of zoning laws while still in fact being illegal distributors, the idea that "of course the TPS won't consider it worth their time to enforce the law that is still on the books" got a little more tenuous.

In PEI they do the weekly pickups that alternate between black and green. Both can get pretty ripe by the time they're ready to be picked up. You learn to keep a compost bag in the freezer for things like chicken waste/lobster shells/etc, that you may not want stinking up the yard for weeks.

Regardless, maggots are definitely a thing.

Yep, it's all the fat on my knees that make them extend into the seat in front of me...

Seat pitch has absolutely been reduced over the past decade or two. Once upon a time, 31" or 32" was standard, and now the cheapest airlines are going to 28" pitch. The width of most airplanes seats is more than adequate, even the worst seats are still 17" wide. It's the sub-30" seat pitch that needs to go take a flying gently caress.
