Nalin posted:The "Unlimited Detail" engine WAS Euclideon. They've just re-branded it for VR. Every year this guy posts a new video and every year it looks the same as ever and not practical at all. The only thing that this "engine" is good for is allowing for rapid streaming of point cloud data, so you get "infinite detail" because it loads a static image very fast. (it's totally raytracing + voxels) Basically it'd be cool for viewing photogrametry or lidar or project tango data at like 10 frames per second with no real time lighting or animation. Unless they can get this going at 90 FPS or like 45 FPS doubled this will be puke city in VR. Edit: Oh this video has "animated point cloud data" now. Still runs and looks like poo poo. Edit 2: why would anyone think that HOLOVERSE would beat out virtual / mixed reality? This center wont even support 360 views. w00tazn fucked around with this message at 06:05 on Jun 3, 2016 |

Also, what the hell was his "holo room" supposed to be? Are those shutter glasses? Is he just projecting images on the walls and getting stereo with shutter glasses and tracking those balls on the glasses?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6NoWIdgKAw This video he basically flies around his Lidar scan and explains that it's doing EXACTLY what i said it was doing. Raytracing for point cloud data. Only took em two years to figure out a way to have moving point clouds represented.

I tried Stern Pinball Arcade for Gear VR today. It was pretty underwhelming. The tables look pretty decent, but the low resolution and lack of head tracking means you can't really make out any detail on the tables. I only played Frankenstein, and the table seemed a little too big and I really would have liked to have changed my viewpoint. Positional head tracking seems like a must for pinball games. I don't understand why they didn't bring it out for Rift the same time as Gear VR.

Should I trust those programs and move on, or is it in fact safe and is there a way to whitelist it?

If a modeler wanted to model a specific tree, they could do so easily, and then manipulate the materials and properties of it way easier than with stupid point cloud data. Yeah, Star Wars Battlefront uses photogrammetry and raster graphics and manages to have photorealistic trees, better than any real-time application I've ever seen. There's so much BS in that video its staggering. w00tazn posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6NoWIdgKAw This looks soooo lovely. You can see through solid objects like cars as he flies past them. Everyone is doing such a good job ignoring them but since they keep trying to press their agenda here I just had to respond: This is not the "Rift thread". This is the "VR thread". VR is going to change pretty rapidly in the next 12-18 months and it's nice having a megathread for it. The "Vive thread" was formed so some people could ironically wall themselves off from the Rift folks. However many of us are gaming enthusiasts and like hearing about both/all technologies. This thread is best thread. Go play console warrior in the other one.

I thought this was the thread for both sides to just fling poo poo at eachother until the true savior of VR, PSVR, releases since both the Rift and the Vive are kinda cool but not really all there yet.

This, basically. If anything, PSVR will hopefully spur more VR development. Like Oculus I'm sure there will also be an exclusive/cool-off period but maybe a win-win for the future of VR once the various hardware options start playing nice.

Whats interesting about the 360 Pictures/Video, is the Google Cardboard Camera seems to take better 360 Pictures that look better in VR (at least on my 6P, HTC 10, and G3) than they look in some of the apps for Rift/Vive. Wonder why that is. Its like Google Cardboard actually does some 3D processing to them even though its a single camera, but all the other VR cameras don't as they don't capture in 3D, just 360, which ends up looking like crap in VR. In other news, ordered a DP to Mini DP cable for the Vive so I don't have to swap plugs when going from Vive to Rift (not like it was hard, but I want to maximize laziness). Look forward to seeing how SteamVR handles having both headsets plugged in when I launch it. Also threw in Overwatch into that order as the 20% off for the physical copy seems like a good deal and the game keeps getting good reviews.

So someone asked me why (the gently caress) both Oculus and Vive charged so much for the shipping & handling and I answered "Coz they ship them from the US of A" as if that made any sense. Is it even true and is there any other reason for such extra costs?

Shipping on my rift was pretty cheap, don't know what you're talking about.

I think the main concern is about the fact it's an "extra" cost. If the Oculus dudes said it costs 750$ no shipping costs it would have been much better than 700 + 50 for the shipping (same for Vive I just don't know the exact figures). Also, you can buy a monitor from Korea and they have no shipping costs whatsoever but anyway I was just wondering if there was some other reason behind the ordinary "shipping costs". I didn't even have to pay them for the delay issue so not really my problem, but I see this coming out almost every time people start bitching about the pricing.

It really depends on how the organization has the units priced. You're paying for shipping one way or the other, one just tells you that you're doing it. iirc, most places that do free shipping figure the price of item as Cost + Profit Margin + Average shipping amount for the targeted demographic/market segment. Meaning that if you're, say, next door to the regional distribution center you're getting shafted but if you're in another state or the other side of the country you're getting a break. It's rather socialistic when you think about it. On the other hand places that charge a seperate shipping fee are more likely selling you the item as Cost + margin, so you're getting a better deal if you're near.

No its not, its objectivity (Maybe when touch releases two out of three of those statements will no longer have merit.). But people in this thread lose their minds if you talk about it. So don't try and pretend like this thread isn't its own hugbox. This thread isn't as unbiased as you'd like to believe it is. Which is fine, its what the people want.
