slate star codex posted:I once read a science-fiction story that depicted a pretty average sci-fi future – mighty starships, weird aliens, confederations of planets, post-scarcity economy – with the sole unusual feature that rape was considered totally legal, and opposition to such as bigoted and ignorant as opposition to homosexuality is today. Everybody got really angry at the author and said it was offensive for him to even speculate about that. Well, that’s the method by which our cheerful acceptance of any possible future values is maintained: restricting the set of “any possible future values” to “values slightly more progressive than ours” and then angrily shouting down anyone who discusses future values that actually sound bad. But of course the whole question of how worried to be about future value drift only makes sense in the context of future values that genuinely violate our current values. Approving of all future values except ones that would be offensive to even speculate about is the same faux-open-mindedness as tolerating anything except the outgroup. This kind of nonsense. It's hard to interpret SSC-dude sometimes because a) he's a poor writer and b) you can't believe someone could come to such a twisted, dumbfuck conclusion. But as far as I can tell, he's saying that to best prevent a future where rape is normalized, we absolutely must not criticize dudes who like to fantasize about rape futures and think rape is ethically isomorphic to homosexuality, or whatever. Imagine trying to pick a restaurant with this guy: SSC: Where should we eat? You: Hm I'm not sure. Just not pizza. Anything but that. SSC: *drives up to pizza place* Oh well, I freely choose pizza. You: What the gently caress, dude? SSC: Ah, but by accepting *any* future except one that includes pizza, you lay the groundwork for a future that eventually includes pizza. You: Holy poo poo you put a lot of thought into being a dumb rear end in a top hat. SSC: You're just saying that because I'm in your outgroup.

I can't believe that hitmen actually exist. I know there are people who murder others as part of their jobs, but the economics of being a person whose sole source of income is going out and killing others for a flat fee paid by strangers who find you through personal connections or secret ads just can't work, can they? Mafia hitmen are also into selling illegal poo poo and protection schemes and illegal loans, and their murders are in the context of furthering their own careers or increasing the competitive advantages of their organization. Tv has taught a generation of idiots that they can just pay ten grand to a stranger to kill somebody.

But I am smarter than them, and so totally okay with how the future will likely have values even more progressive and shocking than my own. Therefore I pre-approve of any value changes that might happen in the future as definitely good and better than our stupid hidebound present.” And saying that the only reason people are okay with hypothetical future values is because they are mostly okay with those values already. I remember being weirded out that his phrasing was "powerful people" in general but then all his examples were "LIKE IN THE GOVERNMENT WINK WINK" and conspicuously avoided mentioning any other form of influential organization. It always amazes me people think these systems will work and keep working, even in just the banal, technical sense. One of these assassins is going to forget his drat phone in a cab because he took it out to hear "Starships" again and give the game away. There's other, quasi-related stuff like futarchy which I think I found by following a link from it and if I understand it correctly is a kind of wackadoodle sci fi direct democracy that involves a market where everyone bets on the likelihood of future events and on policies to address them (and anyone can propose a new one) that then get adopted by their viral popularity as people switch their bets, which is so loving bananas it's not without charm to my inner stoned freshman. I tried reading this long essay where the guy tried to explain how rich people wouldn't just exploit it but my eyes glazed over because I didn't care. That's the best part of the whole saga, Ross didn't actually hire a hitman. He was scammed by somebody pretending to be one, and IIRC it was the very guy he wanted bumped off using an alternate account on Silk Road. This wasn't exactly helpful at the sentencing phase of the trial, of course, because he thought was hiring somebody to commit a murder and that didn't really go well with the "virtuous (and not black) young man with good intentions" portrait the defense was trying to use.

He identifies with racist scum, because he and the scum are both nerds. He privileges his in group and doesn't care about how his in group harms other people. And, in a hilarious parody of identity politics, he also believes that his group is persecuted and that attacks against his imagined identity must be forcibly responded to. But, I am curious how he is transforming that psychological narrative into a supposedly reasoned argument that is congruent with his other stated beliefs. Like, him saying "we should support free speech, event if it is speech I dislike" and "thought police are bad" works perfectly both with his psychology and his other stated beliefs. But extending that to "and we should donate money to this ineffective charity" sounds, on the face of it, odd. At least with MIRI he could Pascal Wager his way out of it. I'm not sure how he can here without being a hypocrite.
