Claremont was a fantastic plotter with a great sense for characters and their interactions. His dialog was very purple and of the time, but that's hardly something to deride him for. He was far from the worst offender (for lack of a better term). Largely it just didn't fit in well with where 90s comics were going. When people refer to "Jim Lee X-Men," they're talking about the period where Lee was the main (but not only!) artist on the title. While not the writer, he still had plot and design input on the series. He created all the costume designs that were used in the cartoon (with the exception of Beast, I suppose). As for Lee, he's tried some somewhat different styles. His work on Bloodshot was notably different than his other work, though that might be as much due to the heavy inking as anything.

Initiative has its moments, Academy is good all the way through, Arena/Undercover can and should be skipped, if not ignored entirely.

If you know the basics of the registration act and Dark Reign (Norman Osborn being put in charge of SHIELD) you know enough to go in. It has very little to do with Initiative, though you do get some cameos later on.

Avengers Arena wasn't as bad as people act like it is, but it's still not good. I almost feel bad for whoever downloads that torrent, and hits that wall. Avengers Initiative was pretty drat fun. I miss those characters.

Academy is great. My only complaint with it is the second half gets very crossover heavy with ongoing events and I don't think a character introduced later was a great choice I feel like X-23 probably shouldn't have joined the Academy. I like X-23 in anything, she's thematically similar to the other kids and her friendship with Finesse is great, but she's still a character with way more backstory and history compared to the other kids and it throws off the team imho. Arena isn't bad but it's really clearly influenced by Hunger Games and Battle Royale and totally misses the point of both. I'm not saying it'd be good if it tried ripping off either of them more, but on its own it's not a good book, and having clear influences it doesn't understand really hurt it.

It was definitely something that made the whole deathmatch part of the story hard to take seriously when a bunch of the characters had never appeared before. Also there was the stupid bit where they had to explain that while Arcade is now unstoppable it's only in the arena, not anywhere else.

She's a fantastic example of even a really stupid idea can be done well if it's done by someone who gives literally any amount of poo poo about it. When she's just 'what if Wolverine was...a TEEN GIRL...also a whore...' she's terrible but when people try to actually explore exactly what all that means in the world around her and to her developing beyond stabbing people in the neck you can actually get some really good stories.

I think the biggest thing I want to praise Tom Taylor for in writing All-New Wolverine is for writing Laura in a way where she's solidly not an emotionless murderbot like she used to be, but also still feels like she's the same person as that emotionless murderbot, just more mentally/emotionally healthy. Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, and Marjorie Liu all really did an amazing job on a character that should be garbage. Also if you're listing X-23's less talented writers, honorable mentions to Joe Quesada for NYX/child prostitute funtimes.

Was definitely a thing in the X-23 solo series, since then it hasn't really come up a lot but it's definitely not explicitly retconned out. Mostly it sticks out in X-23's history because it was her first appearance in comicbooks. Going from the cartoon where she's a badass child assassin that knocks out the X-Men and blows up Madame Hydra to suddenly being a child (? I just realized I'm not positive on this but iirc she's supposed to be 16 in NYX) prostitute was a pretty weird introduction of the character to the comics world.

Kyle & Yost are the ones who created her, you'd hope they could make her compelling. Definitely agree on Taylor managing to walk the tightrope between taking Laura past her earlier voice while not turning her into a generic teen girl like she is in ANXM. The time gap was a good opportunity to get her off that same drat character treadmill she's been on for a while. Kind of hope we get Jubilee or Gambit in the book sooner or later.
