The YF-12A (the SR-71 fighter), or something like it, did actually appear in Electrosphere as a high-altitude interceptor, so it's in Ace Combat.

You can fly the SR-71 in HAWX! Its missiles magically appear around the plane when you shoot them, and then zoom off. Also, people online had a hard time remembering that the SR-71 is a bad plane to try and maneuver behind people with, so they were usually pretty easy to kill; seeing an SR-71 try to dogfight an F-14 was always fun, though.

Both versions of the SR-71 is in HAWX even, the previously aforementioned YF-12A and the 71 itself are both present in the first game. Never bothered flying any of them really.

Escorting Our Attack Operation

Mission 7: Operation Sledgehammer – May 22nd, 1998
Mission 9: Operation Acid Rain (Legacy Version)

We’re skipping over Mission 8 of Legacy because it actually lines up with 8A of Ace Combat 2. Look for it in the following update.

Overview: Scarface Squadron flies as an escort wing for an Allied bombing run on the URF-occupied shipyard facilities in Axel Bay, just south of Ugellas and encounters a mysterious red fighter among the city’s defenders. Later that same day, Scarface is scrambled back to Anchorhead, Erusea to defend the port city against a URF retaliatory strike.

|
Guest Commentators: The Mad Welshman, JamieTheD joins me for Mission 7 of Ace Combat 2. Jamie is still in the midst of his massive series-wide LP of the Wipeout games, and their various franchise-aping knock offs, spiritual successors, and assorted pretenders.

In the Legacy version, I am joined by FPzero. FP is still in the midst of his Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc LP, and has just recently began work on Metroid Prime 2: Echoes with Faerie Fortune.

Axel Bay

We caught a glimpse of Axel Bay City in Lunethex’s Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere side LP, but this is its first chronological appearance in the Strangereal timeline.

Before it was the victim of a terrorist strike by Ouroboros in the 2030s, Axel Bay was home to a thriving civilian and military shipbuilding industry, servicing nations from all across the globe in addition to the FCU. Beyond that, Axel Bay City was also known for having the largest Asian demographic population in Southern Usea.

ZOE
Mission 7 of Ace Combat 2 marks the first appearance of the ZOE fighters in the game. While they were rewritten with a stronger plot connection in Assault Horizon Legacy, in the original game, the ZOEs were simply additional Named Aces who could be shot down for bonus cash and a cumulative endgame bonus for downing the entire “squadron” across the game. Legacy ties them in a little closer to the plot by, 1) acknowledging their actual existence in missions, and 2) tying them into Ace Combats Zero, 5, especially 3 through background lore details.

As you may have noticed in the last update, Assault Horizon Legacy turns ZOE into the acronym Z.O.E., and while I will reveal what that stands for eventually, I will let the mystery persist for a little while longer until we’ve encountered a few more ZOEs in both games.

For now, just take a little while to ponder the mystery of the ZOEs, and think back to what you’ve seen in Electrosphere already, because the seeds of that mess of bullshit have already been planted…

All that is currently known about this pilot is that he is a former Captain from the Belkan Air Force.

A side-effect of that "cumulative endgame bonus" is that if you avoid shooting down this guy in one of his appearances, he'll just use the same plane he did last time in his next one. That said, it's pretty difficult to avoid him because of how aggressive he is - for reference, I had no idea there was anything different for not shooting him down every time until years after I got the game when someone told me.

Fun fact, the Steath Bomber WAS, in fact, supposed to be stealthy during the day: the design team determined that a light pink color would make it drat near invisible even during the day. The idea was proposed to the Pentagon's project leader, who just stared at the design head for a few seconds before saying, "Paint it black."

So yeah, the plane is black because the Pentagon didn't want their cool looking plane to be pink for some reason. Not that it actually matters: the stealth is meant to make the plane harder to lock on to at a distance, so the bomber can approach the long-range air defenses and whack them with missiles, allowing more conventional planes to whack the smaller range air-defenses with virtual impunity; of course, the stealth isn't going to be doing poo poo against a jet at knife-fight range. Maybe the rebels forgot about the radarstation?

STALL

Because the potential for stalling out is made into a key gameplay feature for this mission, we should take a moment to discuss what a stall actually is, roughly.

A “stall” is term in fluid dynamics for what happens to an aircraft when it loses lift due to lack of speed, ascending higher than the aircraft’s tolerance limits, or when the plane’s wing's angle of attack and exceeds its critical angle of attack creating more drag than lift.

While each playable plane across the Ace Combat franchise has its own individual stall speed, the maximum operating altitude for most planes is just under 10,000 ft. The principle strategy for this mission is to get up to a high enough altitude to strike each of the mission targets and never lay off the throttle to avoid stalling out.

Aircraft featured in Mission 8A: Rising High

SR-71 Blackbird
Manufacturer: Lockheed Skunkworks
Role: Reconnaisance
Manufactured: 1964–????
Status: Retired (1999)
Primary Operators: United States, NASA
Quick Facts:
  • Appears across the Ace Combat franchise, but never as a playable plane.
  • Designed for high altitude aerial reconnaissance.
  • Has a reduced radar cross-section, but is not considered a true stealth plane.
  • Holds the record for the fastest air-breathing aircraft, achieving a top speed of 3,529.6 km/h.
  • 12 of 32 manufactured SR-71s were lost to in-flight accidents. None have ever been shot down.
  • The SR-71 was a modified version of the A-12 Archangel recon fighter.
  • An interceptor version, the YF-12, was originally designed, but cancelled and reworked into the SR-71.
  • Replaced by the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper UAV drone for high-altitude surveillance purposes.

U-2 Dragon Lady
Manufacturer: Lockheed
Role: Reconnaisance
Manufactured: 1955–1989
Status: In service
Primary Operators: United States, China, NASA, CIA
Quick Facts:
  • Also appears across the Ace Combat franchise, but never as a playable plane.
  • Designed for high altitude aerial reconnaissance.
  • Also used to electronic sensor research, satellite calibration, and miscellaneous communications purposes.
  • Has a rough operational ceiling of 70,000 ft.
  • Flown over the Soviet Union, China, and Cuba during the Cold War.
  • The U-2S, a modernized version of the U-2, has flown missions over Iraq and Afghanistan during the conflicts in both nations.
  • Replaced by the SR-71 Blackbird for general reconnaissance purposes.
  • Several U-2s were shot down during the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. One such incident was dramatized in the 2015 film Bridge of Spies.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the band U2 was not named after the plane.

XB-70 Valkyrie
Manufacturer: North American Aviation
Role: Supersonic bomber
Manufactured: 1964
Status: Retired (1969)
Primary Operators: United States, NASA
Quick Facts:
  • A cancelled prototype of what would have been the B-70 bomber.
  • Appears in several Ace Combats as a rare one-off enemy.
  • Its six engines could propel it to speeds in excess of Mach 3 (1225 km/h), making it faster than most of its contemporary interceptor fighters.
  • Also has a rough operational ceiling of 70,000 ft.
  • While it was considered immune to enemy interceptor craft and radar, it was vulnerable to supersonic surface-to-air missiles.
  • Was intended to carry nuclear weapons.
  • Proved to be more expensive than, have a shorter operational range to, and be less effective than the B-52, which it was intended to replace.
  • Ultimately cancelled in the wake of the advent of ICBM technology.
  • Was relinquished to NASA to serve as a testbed aircraft once the USAF spiked it.
  • Of the 2 XB-70 prototypes constructed, one was destroyed in a mid-air collision with a jumpjet in 1969, while the second one is housed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.

At the plane's usual operating height, 70k ft, the speed of sound is 1062 km/h. Ergo, 1225 km/h is just Mach 1 in those circumstances. Mach 3 would be 3186, so the XB-70 has an extra 129 km/h on it!

CHOPINBURG RAINFOREST

The Chopinburg rainforest is a vast subtropical heavily wooded area off the western coast of Axel Bay covering the lowlands of south eastern Usea between Axel Bay City and Los Canas, stretching into parts of Ugellas as well. The FCU Allied Forces military complex of Istas Fortress lies on the eastern edge of the rainforest in the mountain range south of Los Canas just inside the “Tango Line”; the estimated operational range of the Stonehenge Turret Network, which is nearing completion in Delarus.

Chopinburg was most likely named after Polish Romantic Era composer Frédéric François Chopin. On a practically unrelated note: the final hours of Chopin’s life set the stage for the JRPG Eternal Sonata, currently being LP’d by Instant Grat and hbomberguy, taking the form of a bizarre anime fever dream as Chopin lays dying of tuberculosis in Paris in 1849.

Using "cockpit" view in AC2 does have an advantage in (potentially) speeding up lock-on times, you know, for those speed-runs you're planning I guess :v: Anyways since the lock-on reticule starts tracking from the centre of the HUD so if you have the target there already it locks instantly whereas in third person view it always has to do the full lock-on.

Role: Multirole (Prototype)
Manufactured: 1991-2000
Status: Cancelled
Primary Operators: Russia
Quick Facts:
  • Appears in several late-series Ace Combats, notably Skies of Deception, Assault Horizon Legacy, and Infinity.
  • Intended to be Russia’s 5th Generation counter to the F/A-22 Raptor and the YF-23 Black Widow II/Gray Ghost.
  • Its development was hampered by repeated postponements due to budget shortfalls brought about by the collapse of the Soviet Union.
  • Was ultimately spiked by the Russian Air Force after its maiden flight in 2000, nine years after its intended production debut.
  • Originally intended to replace the Su-27.
  • Has the same thrust vectoring engines as the Su-37, Su-47, and T-50 PAK FA.
  • Only two 1.44 Flatpacks were built and now exist only as demonstration models.
  • The 1.44 was an attempted upgrade of the original prototype MiG-1.42 Foxglove, though comparative tests showed that the Foxglove outperformed the Flatpack by a shockingly wide margin.

Operation Swordsmith: Shot Down

Childhood friends and both classic movie buffs, when they lied about their age to join the Usean Rebellion's air forces they took on TAC names referencing an old favorite horror film of theirs. Inspired by their namesake, they developed a two-on-one tactic where Baldwin would distract the enemy bandit to allow Bannister to attack from above, very often scoring a clean gun hit into the cockpit; the two never switched positions, and as such Bannister is a higher-scoring ace than Baldwin. They were shot down while trying to keep an arms production base out of Allied hands, and following the rebellion they tried their hand at directing. The result, a film called "The Hall", eventually became a "so bad it's good" cult hit after being discovered and promoted by an Osean comedy duo, a status which the two eventually accepted; there are currently rumors that they are working on a children's cartoon based on it.

And also, since Skippy mentioned he liked it, here's the MiG-29 paint scheme from this game in Vector Thrust:

They were shot down while trying to keep an arms production base out of Allied hands, and following the rebellion they tried their hand at directing. The result, a film called "The Hall", eventually became a "so bad it's good" cult hit after being discovered and promoted by an Osean comedy duo, a status which the two eventually accepted; there are currently rumors that they are working on a children's cartoon based on it.

And also, since Skippy mentioned he liked it, here's the MiG-29 paint scheme from this game in Vector Thrust:

Did you ever get around to making that John Cena plane that ACES and CJacobs talked about in the Mercenary run of Zero, by chance?
