So far all the reviews are that Gojira have stripped down their sound and it's excellent because of it. I'm working my way through it right now.

Edit: Can say all their touring with Mastodon is evident in some of these riffs, they do sludge riffs before breaking out traditional Gojira heavy screeching riffs, and alternate between the two a bit.

Yuuuss. Almost Zeppelin/Floydish before breaking into that groove.

Little more older Baroness/newer Mastodon in this one. I was a little worried when the "Stranded" single didn't grab me but I'm pleased overall. This is up there as a favorite this year for me.

E: Magma Gojira is my favorite Gojira.

I am so very pumped for their show with TesseracT now.

They begin again

Magma is so good. It's way stripped down and a lot more personal because of the subject matter surrounding the album but man is it ever a great listen. I think it's an album that is going to take a bunch of listens to fully appreciate for most people.

"Pray" is insane

Now if only Mastodon would drop that album they've hinted at this year :unsmith:

I can't get into the new Gojira at all. It seems boring and repetitive.

^Same here. I've listened to it twice and it just sounds to me like a bunch of boring, plodding stuff with the occasional decent Gojira riff. I found all the whammy pedal stuff super obnoxious too.

Sort of feels like another Heritage, in that I like the idea of Gojira doing something more stripped-down and melodic, but the execution doesn't really work for me.

Yep, highlight of the album for me, Gojira being my favorite band. I agree with the above poster saying the production feels thin, there's very little drums in the mix compared to previous records. It's also short and aside from a couple tracks not nearly as heavy as what they are used to put out. From an interview I've read this morning Mario said they didnt feel like playing death metal at 45 (he's 35 or so), the album reflects that clearly. So Magma definitely has some shortcomings but the sludge/doom direction is really appropriate for them considering that comment.

I also was a bit meh on Stranded and liked Silvera enough from listening to lovely youtube videos, but I've seen them play live this weekend and actually hearing some massive bass drums on those tracks completely turned me around, both are awesome. Don't miss them live, just don't.

Everything but that guy was actually entertaining from a metalhead's perspective. The audition thing hit a little too close to home though, dead accurate.

It was a pretty fun show, but very obviously a pilot episode. The interviews were not really interviews really, since they were so short.

It would be neat to have a late night show that showcased lesser known bands or non-mainstream stuff and not necessarily just metal but all sorts of underground music.

The blind audition bit was great and I would love to actually see that on a real show, but make it actually real with a hidden camera etc.
