There was a thread a while back about a goon who was arrested for growing and selling weed in Japan. He didn't confess and had to find a new lawyer because his initial one wouldn't work with a uncooperative criminal. I think he managed to get a pretty sweet deal of time served and deportation because the prosecutors got pretty alarmed at the prospect of actually having to go to trial.

Fictionalized (and sterilized), but there's a based on a true story Japanese movie called "I Just Didn't Do It" about a guy who was falsely accused of groping a girl on a train. It ruined his life and took him 5 years of legal battles to prove his innocence. It can easily be found and watched online. His lawyer, like mentioned above, was basically like "You just just say you're guilty and get on with your life. Once you're charged with a crime they'll basically hold you indefinitely until they've convicted you."

It's so all or nothing. There's a bunch of minor stuff that'd get you arrested in the US that in Japan nobody cares about or you'll get thrown in the drunk tank and let out the next day like nothing happened. But if you get arrested for real it's a genuine Kafkaesque nightmare.

In a lot of ways I'd say the system in Japan is scarier than the corrupt system in China. If you get caught up in the criminal justice system in Japan you are completely hosed. If you are caught in the system in China, unless you are a high value political prisoner, there's an 80% chance the police either won't want to bother doing their job so they'll let you go, or will take a bribe and let you go.

i recall some horror story anecdote about the quirks of the Chinese system where a dude woke up surrounded by cops and the start of a very, very bad day because he went and got drunk the other night and punched out the son of a local official, so i guess that sort of "holy poo poo dude you did what" sort of thing covers the 1%

The Japanese justice system is terrible in a qualitative way. The American justice system is terrible in a quantitative way. The Chinese justice system is terrible in a Chinese way.

When I was studying abroad in China one of my buddies had a regular jogging route he'd hit every morning. One day a gate was open that had never been open before, so he figured 'what the hell' and detoured down it. Immediately tackled by like five soldiers cause he'd wandered into an unmarked military base or some poo poo. Of course, since he's jogging, he has no passport, no money, etc. They question him for about an hour before they realize he's harmless and kick him over to the local police, who call our teacher and get her to come over with his passport and so forth. He made friends with all the cops while waiting in detention and went out drinking with them a few times. Also two South Korean girls in the same program were doing a shitton of cocaine and got deported. Hooray for Chinese Justice!

It appears that the Chinese system is unique among the three in that it can and will disappear people completely, without any stated reason.

Serbia just called for bilateral negotiations only in the South China Sea disputes. In unrelated news, China and Serbia signed a "strategic partnership" deal with a lot of economic aid the same day.

Moving it to the middle of Japan would make it useless

That must be specifically the Marines, because there are a bunch of US military bases on the Japanese mainland. No one wants Marines hanging around in large numbers. The US is only allowed to have 100 of them in Korea.

It's more that they're there because we didn't give Okinawa and the rest of Ryuku Islands back to Japan until 1972. From the end of the war til then, they were under US military jurisdiction with, after 1952 or so, a minimal level of civilian government underneath.

Okinawa and Taiwan are not very far apart, but Okinawa's position seems to be better. It's a bit to the north but a bit farther out. If anything, I think Taiwan is too close. But really the crux of my argument is please god don't unleash the US Marines on Taiwan. Taiwan is a really awesome place. Let's just sell them more F-16s.

Another, one of his hobbies was skulking around the hallways in the Doubletree hotel in the middle of the night. Not really doing anything, just sneaking around.

Isn't the current, much delayed plan still to move the Marines in Okinawa to Guam? Okinawa is too deficient of coconut crabs to give our fighting boys the nutritional edge needed to defeat the hordes of ChiComs that will come over those beachheads. The brown tree snakes will also scare off the PLA invasion.

The Okinawan protests have less to do with the US base itself and more to do with Okinawa's strained relationship with Tokyo, which it views the US base as a symbol of.

It's a razor thin line between how sensitive the Chinese national feelings are, and how little they give a poo poo about an individual poor fisherman. It's been ~20 years since the last China Straight Crisis, right?

Well the dead fisherman was Taiwanese so... What is a bit worrying, however, is that this is what the "carrier killer" missile did to a loving fishing boat: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-36680899 In HK news, some fresh protests! http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-36680898 quote:Tens of thousands of protesters have attended an annual pro-democracy march in Hong Kong.
