What, these Nazis used evolution, therefore intelligent design is true is not a coherent argument?

And yes, that is what Ben Stein, noted economist who did not see the 2009 financial crisis looming, said.

It's appallingly poorly reasoned and dishonestly presented. It turned me against Ben Stein.

There's an extremely great review that I think pretty much nailed the prevailing attitude of Ben Stein before he was broken, I believe, by 9/11 (a lot of people were):

Mr. Brayton posted:

There once was a time when political commentator Ben Stein was... not cool. He was always a bit of a droning blowhard. But he was the droning blowhard you rooted for. He was that square, smug relative who had such a good sense of humor about himself that you still looked forward to catching up at all the parties. Obviously, this is mostly the fault of his timeless cameo in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which suggests a man who secretly knows that he's puffed up and wants to make fun of himself and people like him; then again, nobody watching Ferris Bueller really notices in the moment that writer-director John Hughes was a pretty square conservative himself. Regardless, for almost twenty years, Stein's appearances in movies and TV shows, including the batty quiz show Win Ben Stein's Money, suggested a guy who had his political beliefs, but didn't take them at all seriously - he was the movement conservative for people who despised conservatism.

I don't really know when the worm turned; maybe with the 2004 book he co-authored Phil DeMuth, Can America Survive? The Rage of the Left, the Truth, and What to Do About It, part of that insanely loving weird Bush-era genre of right-wing texts, written during the American right-wing's most unassailable position of strength since the fall of the Berlin Wall, screeching about how the country was about to be devoured whole by shady liberals. Certainly, whatever goodwill he had left among what we then called the "reality-based community" was stomped out with the 2008 release of the documentary... good Lord, no, I can't do that to the word "documentary". Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed is a straight-up screed, ideological propaganda so patronising that it makes God's Not Dead seem evenhanded.

My defining Ben Stein moment was when I saw him delivering conservative talking points on some cable news show and his closing argument was "yeah I'm getting paid to say this, but your doctor gets paid to tell you that smoking is bad for you and you still listen to him :smug:" which is just uuuuugh

You're underselling it. A significant portion of the movie is just Ben Stein blaming Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution for the holocaust.

Yeah, Bruce Almighty really surprised me in how far it took the adage "When God wishes to punish mankind, He answers their prayers."

Evan Almighty, on the other hand, is terrible, awful poo poo to be avoided.

Voiceless

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9MapTFqUCU

Mission

quote:

Voiceless is a call to the church,” said Jason Jones, co-executive producer of the film.

“Now more than ever as we see no relief from our judiciary or legislative branches, the church must stand up and take a leadership role in protecting the vulnerable,” Jones added. “We are issuing an urgent call to churches and church leaders to recommit themselves to protecting the sanctity of life.”

Plot

quote:

Jesse Dean is a recently discharged soldier who had a rough upbringing, but because of his wife, found God and now is totally devoted to his faith.

He and wife move to Philadelphia so he can take a new job as an outreach leader at an old church whose membership has been declining. As everything is going well and as he starts connecting to the community, he discovers there's an abortion clinic directly across the street from the church.

He goes to the pastor and to several others in the church and tries to get their help to no avail. One day something tragic and personal happens to him while he's going about his everyday routine. He comes to the point that he begins to take action himself. He gets involved but the more involved he gets, the more resistance he gets from those in church and community. His wife, who thinks his actions will get him fired or land him in jail, also comes against him.

Finally, it comes down to him having to make a choice: is he going to take the easy way out and back off, which is what everyone wants him to do, or will he face a major confrontation which will require him to put everything on the line…not just his job, but his freedom and marriage as well.

This film encourages people to stand up for what they know is right, particularly as it pertains to taking God's truths into society to address social issues. It addresses the spirit of retreat as it pertains to engaging the culture that has developed within the Church.

Cast

Rusty Joiner
Rusty delivers a star turning, award winning performance as Jesse Dean, bringing out the texture and detail of one man's struggle to take a stand amidst adversity from all sides. Rusty has had a variety of film roles including 'Dodgeball' (with Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn), 'Last Ounce of Courage' and many television hit shows such as the 'The Closer', 'Bones', 'Close to Home', 'CSI Miami’ and 'ER'. He has received raving reviews from piers and critics alike for his role in Voiceless, which earned him a nomination for 'Best Actor in a Feature Film' at the Northeast Film Festival 2015.

James Russo
Possessed with a stare that can bring shivers down one's back, he has been quite the accessible villain over the years, and although he has portrayed many memorably gritty, tough-guy gangster roles in the past (such as 'Open Range' (2003), plus 'Beverly Hills Cop' (1984), 'We're No Angels' (1989), 'Donnie Brasco' (1997), 'No Way Home' (1996), ‘Django' (2013); in 'Voiceless', Russo takes that same edgy, Brooklyn personality, but applies it to the character Gil Solomon, the inner city, no-nonsense pastor who will stop at nothing to protect the reputation and future of his church.

Paul Rodriguez
Paul has been seen everywhere on cable comedy showcases and feature films, including Paul Rodriguez: 'Behind Bars' (1991), 'Crossing White Lines' (1999), 'Paul Rodriguez Live'!: 'I Need the Couch' (1986) and 'Loco Slam' (1994), ‘Timechanger' (2002) all of which have helped him to become one of the best and best known Hispanic comics in the US. Paul is also known for his tireless charity work, which includes strong, avid support for the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Farm Aid, Leukemia Telethon, Project Literacy, and Housing Now, among many others. In ‘Voiceless', Paul steals the show as the cocky, inner-city homeless shelter manager, 'Virgil Adorable'.

Brian Anthony Wilson
Brian Anthony Wilson (Will Taylor) began his Film career nearly 20 years ago when he was personally cast in the Supporting Lead role of 'Woody' by Academy Award Winning Director/Producer, Kevin Costner in his post apocalyptic Film,"The Postman". He had the good fortune to work with & learn from, James Russo in that film and was thrilled to work alongside Mr. Russo, once again, in "Voiceless". Recent career highlights include, "Creed" with Michael B. Jordan, "The Benefactor" with Richard Gere, "6 Souls" with Julianne Moore & "Blue Bloods" opposite Tom Selleck and Treat Williams.

There was that one where Robert Loggia is a guy who kidnaps a bunch of women going in for abortions and forces them to bring their pregnancies to term before giving them a final choice of having the kids or aborting them days before their due dates, but then at the end you find out that he's the devil and he sends the women who still want abortions to hell.

Someone should make a biblical film solely about the commie parts of the bible where Jesus tells a rich man to sell all that he owns and give it to the poor because no rich person will ever enter heaven ever and drives the moneychangers out of the temple with a whip. Bonus points if the scenes of money changers are intercut with lshots of giftstores and ATMs in megachurches and televangelists raising money for private jets.
