Yeah you are correct, I just tend to take it as an acceptable trade off as I have an emotional investment in the peace. It also did allow for investigation into those who the state forces colluded with so it wasn't a wholesale amnesty. StoneOfShame fucked around with this message at 18:29 on Jul 1, 2016 |

Nope they will play Politics, which May, Gove and Labour are doing by saying we are aiming for a trade deal on same terms, won't initiate article 50 until we have progress on that i.e. they are all kicking the can down the road. It will be a case of continually working on getting a deal from now until the next election (or the next next election if one is called this year), while all that time the UK will still be in the EU but due to the messed up status won't be receiving EU funding on certain issues. There is one thing UK politicians are very good at is kicking poo poo down the road so the next ones have to deal with it.

The hate for the lib dems comes from a few sources: 1. They're a centrist party historically in third place, so they traditionally picked up protest votes from left and right at the same time. This really annoys the Tories and Labour. 2. They went into coalition with the Tories right after picking up a ton of disillusioned Labour voters who actually gave them their 60 seats, and traded away core left wing campaign pledges they had made like the tuition fees cap that were particularly attractive to Labour voters so that they could get a referendum on PR. This left all those new voters feeling betrayed. 3. Having done that, they then proceeded to lose the referendum (which they should have predicted as the influential media were solidly anti- and it was a complex issue) and generally get kicked around by the Tories throughout the parliament. All they got in return was being a roadblock to some of the creepy poo poo the Tories proposed. This left them looking weak as well as unreliable, and played into a narrative that the Tories were strong and competent that directly led to the majority Conservative government. Their policies are fine but they're in a catch 22: being the third party in an FPTP system means there's no chance they will ever be dictating the terms of a coalition so it's guaranteed they will have to ditch stuff, in which case why vote for them? Basically to be a major party that can force their agenda they need a landslide, which they can't get because they're not a major party. Or they need to be very ruthless junior partners in a coalition, which they weren't last time.

graun's reporting that tom watson wants everyone to back off while he tries to talk Corbyn down. Doesn't sound likely. I guess their polling is showing that the membership is slowly turning against Corbyn so if they keep the pressure up they can call a leadership contest as soon as they think they'll win

A quick gander on Leadsom; took part in tax avoidance schemes to avoid inheritance tax, abstained on same-sex marriages, and was appointed "Minister of State at the Department for Energy and Climate Change, despite her previous opposition to wind farms and European Renewable energy targets". Typical Toryshit.txt, really.
