I came in late to this run, is it a gimmick run, or is it a Contractually Obligated Metroid run?

That DK race will probably end up being the best run of the marathon. I can't picture anything topping that.

So if this is your first time seeing Metroid Prime it's your standard, decent run. If you've seen it before then it's pretty meh.

Minrad posted:"which runs are good" and "which vods do I watch" are pretty much the most common questions for the thread, for the next two weeks I guess, but my point was more that the only really useful criteria for whether or not you'd like it is pretty much "are you interested in the game?". Everything else is subject to that. like this thread really liked the DK race and I just found it boring because I don't find the game very engaging or interesting as a run so I wouldn't recommend it much and if there's a real knockout of a run that you'd never expect like Tetris was a couple of GDQs back, people usually just recommend it on its own. a rating thing seems a bit dumb since it comes down to one's own personal taste in video games a lot like right now I am kinda snoozing through the metroid prime run as well, not because it's necessarily bad but because I just don't find the game interesting to watch

Metroid runs as a whole are very much 'been there, done that', but they're expected. Save/Kill the Animals usually accounts for a good amount of the donation total by the end of the event.

For instance, last AGDQ's Animorphs.

Since that was a run so good it made me actually learn the speedrun myself (it's painful don't) anyway my point is that you really only need to state the really good runs or the really bad runs, everything else in the middle is kinda really subject to individual taste in video games

Like Pakled said, if the commentator is really good, or if there's some amazing exploit they show off, I'll watch a run for a game I normally have no interest in. It's tough to figure out which runs those are without getting recommendations from a place like this thread.

I don't think it was less impressive than Tetris but it kind of moves too fast to see so it wasn't as good considering most people have probably never played Stepmania. Everyone has played Tetris and most of us aren't amazing at it.

the Stepmania poo poo was just some apm wankfest it doesn't help that stepmania music is weebstep poo poo and nightcore garbage oh also TAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAPTAP

I have played stepmania for years, the Tetris guys are way more fun to watch. 20-30 buttons per second in a rhythm game is obviously insane but it's just not that much to watch imo even fully appreciating how hard it is.

Everyone has played Tetris and most of us aren't amazing at it. Yeah like, I know that the stepmania showcase guy was very skilled and coordinated, but it just wasn't visually interesting at all to watch a guy's hands go really fast while arrows move across a screen. Tetris showcases tend to be at least visually interesting as well as being more relatable. More subjectively, I thought the music they chose was garbage. Ironsoviet posted:If I remember right, though, they eventually busted out the weird game modes and that went over a bit better. I don't remember that, I watched the Stepmania showcase live and it was all just plain old black background, no gimmicks.

# ? Jul 4, 2016 02:59 |

The gimmicks were what the arrows were doing, it didn't change the background at all unfortunately. The showcase should have gone "This is how fast a high-end song is like in top-tier Stepmania (NIGHTCORE NIGHTCORE GODAWFUL NIGHTCORE)" "And here it is with modifiers.." "And here is what Stepmania can do with its scripting (Break out that Undertale song or something similar)" "And here is a comparison of someone doing their utmost on a pad!" If it's always balls to the wall then there's no comparison to make.

Yes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kGi9LE21dU EDIT: V But that's the thing, that poo poo is no big deal for him but it looks visually impressive for amateurs to the scene which makes up the bulk of watchers. Sage Grimm fucked around with this message at 03:07 on Jul 4, 2016 |

The stepmania guy was playing "serious" at cmod 1000 anyone that can do that barely needs to see the arrows to know what to do. wobbly arrows, weird scroll direction, spinning arrows, etc. are pretty trivial when you're that good.
