I'll forever associate this game with melted McDonalds vanilla milkshakes because when I played it I'd just gotten my wisdom teeth out

It has some cool graphics and moments, but the gameplay isn't as fun as DKC2's.

Taking videogame strats (especially speedrunnimg and glitches) and reading them back onto 20th century novels like Pale Fire and Finnegans Wake.

Somehow I'm getting away with this in my English department. And getting finding to go to GDQs (which are basically academic conferences). I dunno.

This is oddly enough something that people have saying for centuries--because with drama you have to wait thru the whole thing.

it's good when you don't have races of games where you can lose immediately...also preferable to have races like that with more than 2 people *insert that Super Metroid clip here*

I recall reading of recent studies showing that, generally speaking, having a movie/book/tv show spoiled doesn't substantially reduce the viewer's enjoyment.

I would probably enjoy reading your dissertation.

WOW.

I'm trying to fit GDQ into my research as well. I study pedagogy in interaction design. I have a crackpot theory about studying how speedrunners manage to memorize entire games, and learn how to speedrun a game. Especially epically long games like RPGs.

That might have to wait until I'm tenured somewhere though.

I know for me personally, getting spoiled might even increase my enjoyment because I hear stuff like "oh yeah that character dies" and it makes me wonder "how on earth do they get into that situation". :3:

man these boss fights are the x-factors for this run

edit: also regarding spoilers even though the title for FYAD was "Han dies" for like a whole month I still didn't realise it was real until I was sitting in the theatre for TFA. But that might be more because I thought FYAD was taking the piss so I didn't think it was a real spoiler. gave me an interesting reaction in the theatre though "oh, oh, OH HOLY poo poo THAT WAS TRUE?!?! :aaaaa:"

So why are they doing different versions when one has a trick that makes it clearly faster? Is the guy running Japanese just terrible and the other guy offered him a handicap?

Sounds really cool, would love to hear about the theory sometime—I'm actually giving a paper on ultra-speedrunning in the fall (specifically, Final Fantasy XII Order of Ambrosia%, which is about 27-30 hours), very intrigued by all that.

Maybe that's just the version of the cart that he has, and he doesn't want to buy a different version of the same game? Speed running can be an expensive hobby.

I guess, it just seems like if they're doing a race, they should do whatever they can to be competitively balanced.

Why the gently caress is the TGM exhibition being shown at 1 in the afternoon? It's a huge hit with people, and by not making it the prime Main Event for tomorrow I feel like they're going to lose a lot of donations.

Nope, far from it. You can use seeds in the game so both people get the same floors and items... but they decided against that and went RNG vs. RNG.

They didn't use a seed saying that it invalidates the run because the other could catch up or cheat by screen watching or just beelining for the item/exit.
