Twitch is a lovely company and he doesn't want to give them money. That's a fair position. It's the declaring that he refuses to support a charity marathon that's only tangentially related to Twitch that's weird.

This is sort of hilarious because almost every big streamer already has a tip jar, and will prominently display the highest tip in their current session, and allow people to send in messages with tips that're then read with text-to-speech. They've been doing this for quite some time - this is simply Twitch legitimizing the process, which was separate from subscription money as far as I understand?

Yeah, there was a reddit ama somewhere from a camgirl and she said that the big sites have what is essentially an in-site currency that is used and you cant solicit for paypal or some other payment platform, so to get around it they do skype shows and poo poo or post an Amazon wishlist so you can just get poo poo you were going to buy with your cam-money anyway. Its kinda strange and it is paying for sex through layers of bullshit. I don't know if twitch bans a separate donate button via paypal or whatever, but there you go.

Twitch is taking a higher percentage than the alternative systems were. As long as linking to your PayPal donation page isn't banned, I have no issue with Twitch instituting the new system. And Twitch isn't dumb; they know how much money people will throw out just to see something happen in chat.

Yeah I don't follow game streaming except the GDQ marathons, so I can't speak to the Twitch donation thing, I just happened to know the answer to this one. Sounds like they do take a bigger cut, but maybe it is a lot easier to setup. Hopefully they don't ban Paypal and other exchanges for folks that want to use that.

what I wish they'd ban is all the tickers and donation alerts and other dumb bullshit its just encouraging stupid kids to waste their money on their favorite streamer so they can be acknowledged just in general, being able to donate directly to a streamer is the dumbest poo poo anyway and just encourages the shittiest most useless people to try to make it big as a streamer

Not that this doesn't make him a blowhard for the way he said it and his reasons for not donating. I don't think they're banning tipping through alternate sources, at least, they say in their cheering faq that "third-party services and tools" are still allowed.

I don't think being able to give directly to a person is a bad thing, but i also don't need little gifs and noises going off every time someone gives the guy a buck. yea, thats fair I think people that do that are scummy and preying on people that just want some acceptance, especially younger kids. What I really hate are the people who have that donation popup when your combined max donation for the night becomes the highest donation calebhart just sits there and plays the first level of megaman over and over talking about how much he loves his community as a bunch of 12 year olds keep out donating each other

Twitch Bits are apparently $1.40 for 100, and 1 bit = 1 cent for a streamer. PayPal margin is supposedly 2.2% + 30 cents so it's probably...close? assuming Twitch isn't also taking a cut on the back-end, so it's really just Amazon trying to get in directly on action that's already happening. Y'know, like allowing operators to charge people to access private servers in the game you develop, or something.
