jetz0r posted:Isn't low percent super mario world a credits warp? No, that's 0-exit. Low% I think just goes to Star Road as early as possible, does all those levels, and warps straight to Bowser's Castle V e: Oh, yes, this. Electric Lady fucked around with this message at 06:38 on Jul 8, 2016 |

Bruceski posted:Varies by the devs and what "speedrunning" stuff you're looking for. Metroid Zero Mission put in deliberate in-game shortcuts for low-item runs, but they're not leaving in glitches or anything. For Prime, well, it's actual coding errors and stuff like that and it's not surprising that Retro would fix bugs when re-releasing the game. It was a matter of programmer pride making a "clean" game rather than a deliberate "gently caress you" to speedrunners, it's just that the change was to the speedrunners' detriment. That's actually fair, tbh outside of moments where the glitches are so absurd they're funny like the wedding skyrim bug I much much much much prefer a game where someone just plays well quickly using game mechanics rather than bugs through walls. I know this would take out almost any of the first person games from the runs tho so I don't mind that being a thing I just enjoy people playing good to sequence break than a super mario world 'hey guys the credits rolled I beat the game' moment.

A lot of indie devs, thanks largely to GDQ, are aware of speedrunning communities now and seem to make an effort to not fix anything that would hurt speedrunning but do very little for casual playthroughs.

ArbitraryC posted:Is bug/glitch free a speedrun category? For a lot of games, yeah. A lot of games don't have a big enough speedrunning community to support many separate categories though.

ArbitraryC posted:Is bug/glitch free a speedrun category? Not entirely. Going out of bounds in this game is very powerful, so that's the only condition they have to avoid. There's an ability that lets you teleport short distances, and the rules surrounding that are apparently a little bit convoluted! He just used some Rube Goldberg set of actions that involved a bug, too. This run's very well commentated btw. edit: I misread that original post entirely sorry lol

I don't really think it counts as Pacifist if it's the game's mistake that you aren't credited for the kill...
