You're probably remembering wrong, the game is pretty hard. Mario handles unlike anything you've seen in a platformer before, or like they said in the run "the physics are wonky".

I played it like a year ago, it's definitely a bizarre game in many ways. It feels like it was never meant to be a Mario game but they stuck the name on it to make it sell better pretty late in development.

Still though, even Arino beat it in 6 hours on GameCenter CX which is one of the fastest clears in that show's 13-year history. Maybe it being so short is what made it feel so easy, dunno.

I literally beat Super Mario Land on my first try when I played it back when it was a new game. It was absurdly easy.

Of course, easy to play doesn't mean easy to go fast.

Yeah I could see it being a race and having an actually interactive couch could have given it a much better look but you're never really going to change how slow paced the dude painfully crawling around on one wheel and positioning himself just so he can flip down onto a platform below or w/e it's just not interesting to someone who doesn't play the game. Anyone can understand a platformer and people making hard jumps fast, no one without experience playing the game is going to understand how he controls the bike physics to balance correctly or care and visually it just looks slow.

The levels demoed were just bad for a speedrunning exhibition

The highlight for me (and a lot of others) was the Scrooge McDuck level modeled after Ducktales Remastered. They needed more levels like that and far fewer generic post-apocalyptic/warzone levels.

They should have started with some generic-looking yet highly technical levels and then followed it up with goofy poo poo.

Oh, and there was that one level where the setpieces assembled themselves as the rider advanced. That was fantastic.

Also the correct method of protesting bits is... don't buy bits.

The game is super short, yeah (I heard you can even beat it in under 15 minutes) :v:

It's also really bizarre, with Superballs, Moai, the can-can and Jiangshi. They continued the "Mario, but somehow even more bizarre" trend in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins at least.

Notch is throwing a fit because twitch, in standard tech startup fashion, has no business plan and has no way of making money, so they are experimenting with letting people buy "twitch money" to donate to streamers and they take something like 40% of the profit.

All your friends and foes,
they thought they knew ya,
but look who's in your heart now.
So, speedrunning related but not GDQ related, only insomuch as now this is probably gonna show up at AGDQ 2017 now, but recently a palace skip was discovered in Paper Mario TTYD that would let you save like, an hour on the previous best time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lamd-d-Ayqk

This was pretty much written off instantly as "only useful for TAS, since it would be too unreliable or too hard to do in a regular run.

So, of course, someone does it in a real run 3 months later and becomes new world record holder for TTYD. :v:

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

Main thing I remember about SML was that the resolution and contrast were horrible on a basic Gameboy (yes I'm old, ya dang whippersnappers). Things were pretty much invisible when they were moving, you're just one smudge dodging and jumping on other smudges.

Specifically Twitch refuse to say what proportion they take, and they've banned streamers from talking about it. Some streamers have dropped heavy hints that it's 30% (compared to Paypal's 3%), but for all we know they might even be taking different percentages from different streamers. It's all hugely scummy right now.

And sgdq is using this and losing upwards of 30% of donation money to twitch cause that sounds pretty lovely and makes sense to boycott?

As a percentage of income, I and I'm sure most people who have donated, have donated more than that.

Also, without Twitch, Minecraft would've been an obscure indie game. And who is he supposedly in support of by snubbing an event for streamers? Twitch, for who marathons like this cost money? The streamers who gain exposure by participating?

no

Cheering is only currently enabled in beta on a handful of individual streamer's channels, GDQ donations are going entirely separately through a non-Twitch system

Twtich, as a platform, makes all this stuff possible, and the developers deserve to be rewarded handsomely for their work. They should be more transparent about the percentage they take but I would be surprised if they nailed down a number before the system is throughly tested and mature.

No, not at all; Notch's chain of logic is, shockingly, faulty. Bits being scummy has basically nothing to do with GDQ right now - though it might by the time AGDQ next rolls around.

Nah! A little chocolate will do

you know I'm just going to say right now that after the Bethesda stuff last night this is kind of boring.

This is just my opinion but to me the fun speedruns ARE the ones where you can break a game over your knee. It's why Metroid isn't boring (also because there are so many different categories that require many different strategies) even though they do 2 or 3 of them every year, and it's why runs of games like Half-Life or Deus Ex are great to watch.

Mario speedruns are just...boring, unless it's SM64
