Max out the ship mobility skills, throw any sort of +turn console on (and there's a lot of actually useful variants these days), get 18+ turn on even the fattest of whaleboats. And that's before boff abilities and such that improve mobility. :effort:

Inertia matters a lot more in practice, that's why stuff like the Scimitars and Vengeance feel so awkward even despite their decentish turn rate.

I get the feeling a lot of people ranting about turn rates are trying to fly Jupiters and poo poo without replacing Pedal to the Metal.

Or it's a bunch of people like me that haven't played much in two years, has a head full of out of date info and politely scoffs at how much poo poo keeps getting piled into this game. Not to mention the constant assurances that "anyone with half a brain can fit a ship and get through some advance queues" now being matched with responses like "I can't believe you even had to ask that"

Like hey sorry dude, the game moved on while some of us were away and frankly discussion around here always centered more on "do this build" and less on "this is why this build works so well"
On top of all that the skill system is literally all new from my last login and my past experiences with this game tell me "the tool tips on these skills are useless at best, misleading and obtrusive at worst"

Edit: And to my knowledge the only other major resource of game mechanics is the STO subreddits where to this day they insist that some need play a healer role, and a tank role and all that mmo holy trinity bullshit that don't apply to this game.

In other words, expect more stupid questions in the thread, including mine because there's a lot of new poo poo going on and my human nature makes me try to ignore it and carry on like it's still the days when ENG was king and SCI was a trap.

That's a completely fair point to make. And if it wasn't constantly the same group of people saying the same things over, and over, and over, I would even agree and apologize.

When it's actually new or returning players, you'll find the thread is much less vitriolic than it has been for the past couple weeks.

They're back on this poo poo? Last I checked they were flogging builds that were a year or two out of date, but sprucing them up by giving them hot fantasy names.

Just wanted to quote this post from about a year ago. 220 dil to 500 in a year.

I noticed it in a discussion of the new Doom queue, talk of how the varied objectives meant an even greater than usual focus on dedicated healers and tanks to draw attention away from warp cores and alla that mess. It may not be prevalent, I wasn't digging to deep, just skimming threads to get a broad idea of what's going on with all the new stuff.

Haven't played properly in years, ain't had many or any of the shiny ships or their consoles. And yes, I like cruisers and carriers. I don't think I even have Pedal to the Metal; I don't have many specialisation points. Highest character is 57.

So I've been completely lost with regards to Turn Rate for years. The general advice on Turn Rate was 'live with it'. Like, everyone recommends the Tachyokinetic Converter for Turn Rate. I've only ever had 5 Lobi, and have never wanted to open boxes in the first place.

If you don't want to spend lobi on your turn rate, I honestly suggest getting a Conductive RCS Accelerator. You can craft them or buy them for ridiculously cheap on the exchange and they have a neat proc and a number of useful variants. Plus they come as ultrarare right out of the box, which is always nice.

It's a solid generalist build, and it shits on torpedoes, as all real builds should. 8/10 would probably use and fail to understand as a newbie because this game is opaque.

It's good. If you want a more generalist/less glass-cannon skill set, drop the 6 ranks in admiral tactical and fill out some of the science/eng commander level skills - won't affect your DPS much, and will increase survival.

Doing the TOS stuff was fun and I liked the little touches they put in (like the Gorn special attack being throwing a huge rock) but it also reminded me why I stopped playing because wow this game is still janky as gently caress, ground combat is still kind of a mess and so is the UI. The last time I played was before the Romulan expansion. I assume the endgame is still a combo of queues, currencies and dilithium dailies? I will never care about ground stuff but if the space content is good I could see the game staying installed for a little bit. I do love my Galaxy-class.

Also what was the special unlock we're getting for doing the TOS stuff at release? Gorn race unlock?

Either upgrade, or grind 23c missions. 23c mobs drop TOS loot.

If you have a TOS character, send a bunch of money to him before you leave the 23rd century, TOS ESD sells TOS gear, Boffs and all that up to MKIX

If you're going to add it to the article, I guess I should explain my reasoning. You drop the tac readiness skills because they're a trap - even fully filled out they don't drop recharge time low enough to be useful. You still need the same doffs/traits/A2B/whatever to get to the global cooldown with or without them. You drop the coordination protocols because pets got heavily nerfed awhile back, and so adding a bit more damage/survivability to them doesn't help that much. The only reason to spend those 6 points is to unlock the tac ultimate, but the tac ultimate is a clicky power with a long cooldown. Useful against gates in ISA and the crystalline entity, but not generally useful for normal play.

And for all the new people coming back - cryptic actually worked really hard to make the skill explanations accurate. If the tooltip says it adds 15% accuracy, it really does.

Finally, for anyone who wants to come up with their own skill distribution, remember that the first skill in a line has the largest effect. Behind the scenes skills are on a 0-100 scale and the first point usually gives you 50 in the skill, with the second giving you 80 and the final one 100. If you can't figure out where to stick a skill point, starting a new chain is more effective than finishing one you've already started.

If anyone finds this useful, I accept payment in catfish sammiches and in lockbox ships donated to new players.

Reputations: Persevere in gaining Reputations and you’ll gain bonus Energy Credits, Dilithium vouchers for use in Reputation Stores, and bonus Marks so that you can purchase the special gear offered by Reputations. When you reach rank 5 in all nine current reputations – Task Force Omega, Temporal Defense Initiative, Nukara Strikeforce, New Romulus, Dyson Joint Command, 8472 Counter-Command, Delta Alliance, Iconian Resistance, and Terran Task Force – your Reputation projects will be updated so that any project that awards special gear will now replace Mk XII very rare gear with Mk XIII ultra-rare gear instead!
