Honestly stopping the timer after the credits is mostly a Japanese thing. They used to do the exact same thing for Paper Mario until some American got the top time and officially decided he wasn't timing the credits anymore and basically everyone immediately followed suit

I hear Miyamoto or SOMEONE at Nintendo was upset at all the story and new characters in the RPGs, so they dialed that back and it's why a lot of the newer rpgs (Paper Mario and M&L) are kinda bland "Rescue Peach" stories that don't do anything fun with the characters nor introduce any cool new ones.

Bowser's Inside Story and TTYD door are good as gently caress though.
