Ran was really good. It's basically a feudal Japanese version of a Shakespeare play and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

To be specific, it's Kurosawa's adaptation of King Lear.

And the praise in this thread is no exaggeration, it's a fantastic film. I'll also double up on the recommendations for High and Low and The Bad Sleep Well, both of which are awesome crime dramas.

Don't Look Now(1973) is streaming on Amazon.
I really enjoyed the film and its' editing, the music and the dreamy Venice locale
The ending shocked me, I'm going to watch it again.

Stray Dog is awesome. So is High and Low, which has a really weird structure but is still very watchable and interesting. I think my favorite is Hidden Fortress, which is one of his most lightweight, but also most entertaining. Just a great breezy adventure movie with Toshiro Mifune in full movie star mode. You can really see how much George Lucas and Steven Spielberg followed Kurosawa and Hidden Fortress in particular when they made their own action adventure movies.

These are all up on Hulu, I think.

Hidden Fortress may be lightweight as far as the story goes, but visually its up there with anything Kurosawa ever did. Seeing what he was able to do with widescreen in stuff like Hidden Fortress and Sanjuro, I find it difficult to go back to some of his earlier masterpieces even though they are undeniably great(Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood).

I liked season 1 and kind of wished they'd just left it at that. I bailed on season 2 after a couple episodes because it revolves around Ben Burke and he's probably my least favorite character (it might be his incredibly punchable face).

I'm really looking forward to Stranger Things. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.

Season 1 was not that great, and neither was the book despite a strong start. Still I didn't regret watching it. That said season 2 is a steaming pile of poo poo.

I just finished watching Ashby on Netflix, and the blurb really doesn't do it justice at all. Sadly it's hard to make it any more fitting without spoiling it.

First 20 minutes spoilers:
Mickey Rourke's character is an assassin dying from a brain tumor

I thought it was a nice sweet movie without being terribly saccerine.

Marco Polo season 2 is up. The first one was really fun with a fantastic cast of characters. They kinda pull the Netflix thing where they market a typical white protagonist and then have them take a backseat to an actually diverse and interesting cast of characters. If you're looking for exciting political intrigue in the Mongol Empire then look no further.

The production design is absolutely gorgeous. I saw it on a 4k TV once and was gobsmacked. Also Joan Chen :fap:. I love how the theme song incorporates Chinese, Mongolian, and Venetian elements.

Also if, like me, you assumed that Shameless was just another Always Sunny, think again. It's a really great, raunchy comedy and drama in equal parts. William H Macy crushes it.

Vaginas, my subject.
Plane hulls, my medium.
ten episodes in and Limitless is basically "What if Chris Pratt's character from Parks and Rec actually was recruited by the FBI"

i mean there's a bit more nuance but the main character basically is Andy Dwyer.

So it looks like they just added all (or most?) of the JASH content onto Prime. I remember hearing this plugged on the Earwolf podcasts a few years ago, but never really sought it out. It seems to have a ton of really odd, short films/episodes. So far I've really liked Catherine, a 12 part 2 min per episode show starring Jenny Slate. I love Slate so I love this one. I also watched a ten minute film starring Gillian Jacobs called It's Not You, It's Me.

Everything's really weird and some of it doesn't hit for me, but there are a lot of Earwolf adjacent people who are really funny involved.

You shared it with a dick.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend just got added to US Netflix a week or two ago and so far I'm finding it hilarious. It's got characters so likeable you overlook how pathetic they are and how bad their decision making is, wrapped up in over the top ridiculous yet still incredibly high quality musical numbers.

I'm half way through the 2nd part (of 3) of NSU German History X on Netflix and I gotta say this is probably the best drama I've watched this year. Really well done & acted.

Based on a true story, it tells the tale of some folks who got involved in the national socialist underground, from their indoctrination in the early 90s up to them plotting terrorism and committing hate crimes. Then it shifts to showing you the before & after lives of the victims. And finally the official investigation that is plagued by racist officials & government scandal.

I guess this was a big story in Germany and there's still an ongoing trial there, but here in the US I had never heard any of this.

Highly recommend
