Erdogan had purged the military so that exactly this stuff would not happen. Guess whoever screened the current general staff really screwed up.

I don't know much myself, but traditionally military leaders are secular, pro-Europe, and anti-Kurd. Edrogan had done a good job co-opting and biting off the head of the snake regarding them for years, well, until now.

Erdogan had been amassing power lately to an alarming degree, exhibiting increasing instability, least of which re foreign policy (the running theory with his political enemies is that he is pro-ISIS). However, he had just won an election (that had the SE of the country practically not vote due to military crackdowns).

Turkey WAS Erdogan for the last decade. This can only lead to more instability.

How would they possibly be better? Real dictators who take power through violence aren't better than petty pseudo-dictators.

I'd take a real dictator who's strongly committing to maintaining a secular state over a pseudo-dictator who has been flirting with a bunch of Islamists.

It's gonna suck hardcore for the Kurds though, no question.

In the off-chance this turns into a protracted civil war, getting their nukes out of the country would presumably be a big deal to the US.

Ensure your Embassy is aware of your location and contact information, then stay put until things calm down one way or the other.

Teddybear posted:

I genuinely think you should try to get to an embassy.

Do not do this. You do not want to be in the streets during something like this. The embassy does not have the ability (or space, for that matter) to shelter many people and likely *will not* do so. If things get bad they can coordinate your exit from the country.

Neither Erdogan nor the military are out to get you so whoever wins you're fine. Just keep a low profile and out of the way.

At risk of leaping to the worst conclusion, this has the potential to get real ugly if it gets dragged out, correct? If it turns out the majority of the military is backing this but they aren't able to sew up control before Erdogan can organize his supporters, could it spiral into some sort of civil conflict?

Yeah, judging by the helicopter raining down fire on the city, I would assume Turkey is pretty much coup'd. Good riddance to Erodagan, but I'm not sure how much hope I have for the Kurds after this.
