It's been a while, but I still feel about the same regarding the ending. Natural disasters are, well, natural. Actively choosing to go back in time and helplessly listen to your best friend/girlfriend bleed out alone on a bathroom floor isn't.

You witness and prevent several people dying in Episode 5. So the trucker from the diner, Evan, Alyssa, the fisherman, Warren, Joyce, Frank, and Pompidou are assumed dead if you weren't there to intervene. Although apparently the LiS wikia says the Two Whales Diner is still standing in the Sacrifice the Bay ending, so maybe it doesn't blow up in that timeline? If that's true, then I'm much more happy about the sacrifice the Bay ending, since it's assumed not everything played out like it did in the Everyone Dies timeline. Would David still have gone to the Dark Room if Max and Chloe weren't there? He and Jeffereson may also be alive in the sacrifice Bay ending.

I thought it was pretty explicit that "Sacrifice Arcadia Bay" meant sacrificing the town, as an institution, not letting everybody die (necessarily). That's why I chose it. You can live through tornadoes; heck I've done it a couple times.

You couldn't grok my race car, but you dug the roadside blur.
Beat the game. I really liked it! The story was believable enough and the characters had at least a little nuance about them instead of just one-dimensional archetypes like you might expect to find in a high school story. Warren in particular stands out, because he's probably the closest to what a stereotypical gamer is, but the way he was portrayed is like holding up a mirror to me when I was a teenager. He makes me uncomfortable, for all the right reasons, and it seems like Max and I are on the same page judging by her nightmare. Speaking of the nightmare , I felt it owed a debt to Arkham Asylum. It felt like the Scarecrow hallucinations, even down to playing as Victoria briefly feeling like being the Joker.

Some things got on my nerves though. The time travel is a bit inconsistent. Sometimes I can stay in the same place and rewind, sometimes I can't. Sometimes I keep the poo poo I stole or pictures I took, sometimes I can't.

Batmax and Robin don't really seem to give a poo poo about covering their tracks. They'll gladly outright steal paperwork when they have HD cameras with practically unlimited storage on them at all times. Why not just take pictures (you're a photographer...) and leave as much stuff behind as possible so people don't think you're on to them? They left the binders strewn all over the desk in the rape dungeon instead of putting them back where they found them. Even if they ultimately were made regardless, wouldn't you at least put a little effort into covering your tracks?

Played through the first episode. The focus on teenagers makes the game feel quite authentic seeing how they all appear insecure and annoying to deal with. The downside is that I pretty much hate every single character due to this. Does the characters become more likable or is it just gonna be magical angsty teenager simulator for 4 more episodes?

Episode 1 is the worst in the series, but they had to establish the world and characters somehow. 2-3-4 are probably 3 of my favorite gaming experiences ever.

Making all the characters suck in episode 1 is a really clever way to make you really, really, really feel for them when they actually start seeming like real people late on.

After picking this up in the steam summer sale, I just finished the game tonight. Best $10 spent this year. I really didn't think I'd get that wrapped up in it, but the ending genuinely made me sad which is maybe the first time that's happened in a game so it's quite an accomplishment.

That said, are there any other good 'story' games out there (outside of the obvious TellTale games)? It's not exactly the most popular genre out there, but I'd have to imagine there's at least a few quality titles out there?

Is there still plans for a sequel to this? Any updates on it?

e: also for anyone just starting it now, its interesting to go back to the first few pages of this thread to see what the story speculation was between each chapter. I played this over the course of 5 days, so its pretty impressive to see some people guess huge plot twists or major themes after watching one or two episodes.

Kentucky Route Zero is probably the best "story" game out there, but it's short and sitting at 3/5 episodes completed, with several years since episode 3 got released. Oxenfree is apparently similar in tone to this game (teeeeeenagers) but I haven't played it. I enjoyed Firewatch but some people really hate the ending, and it's also pretty short. Gone Home is one of the most famous story games, and it has a lot in common with LiS. Pick it up if you liked the whole looking around people's rooms to find out more about them aspect of this game. The Stanley Parable is hilarious, The Beginner's Guide is depressing and pretty poignant, both are good imo.

The dev's next game is some vampire thing, I think they've left the possibility of a sequel open but there's nothing concrete.

BobTheJanitor

I wouldn't call Dying Light a good story game, not by a long shot. That game is fun in spite of its story, definitely not because of it. The more you can ignore the clunky plot and stilted acting and get back to hitting zombies with electric fire axes, the better.

For actual good story games, you're probably going to want to look for anything in the vaguely defined 'adventure' genre. The TTG stuff, yeah, but probably also anything from Wadjet Eye games. They get a lot of praise for good stories. I've only played one or two (drowning in backlog, please send help) but what I've seen has been quality. Also, depending on your ability to stomach anime, there are probably some Japanese VN games with quality stories. Not sure how you'd sift the pile to separate the good from the terrible, though. Also probably some games from the much maligned 'walking sim' genre. But, again, it's tricky to figure out which games are using the lack of gameplay as a pathway to focusing on a rich story, and which are just a lazy money grab that didn't bother to put any content in and hoped no one would notice.

I liked Oxenfree while I was playing it, but it did not have a single good ending. They later released some free DLC which adds a new ending which I guess is meant to be the best ending, but I didn't like that ending either.

I told myself I'd get Kentucky Route Zero when it completed, and so far I'm not regretting my decision, as the wait between chapters seems to be awful.

Edit: I liked the Blackwell games from Wadget Eye, yeah, but they're not the "make a choice" kind of story games; they're traditional old school (graphics too) point and click adventures. Also the puzzles are pretty easy if that's important to you.

I'll jump on to this and say that while the end is indeed terrible, it's still totally worth playing. It's got a great soundtrack and there's a ton of LiS Ep. 5-style breaking down of reality/loving with the game mechanics.

Besides TWD Season One if you haven't played that yet, the only game that really hit the same notes for me as LiS was Gone Home. It only takes about two hours to complete and I think you can find it pretty cheap now.

Kentucky Route Zero's last episode ended with enough finality to be considered a conclusion to the whole series, albeit an incredibly bleak one. The wait between episodes 2 and 3 was torture, though.

I am... cautiously optimistic about this? If they nail down the right actors to play the characters then I'm all in. I wonder if they would follow the original story beat-for-beat or extend the timeline beyond the five day loop that LiS takes place in to flesh out other ideas.

VagueRant

I think this is a bad idea. For as much additional depth as Life is Strange gave to it's initially cliché characters, it's interactivity, the fact it is a game is what made it so interesting. As a TV show it will just come off a like high school soap opera with a supernatural twist. In TV there's a billion high school dramas, but in video games they're INCREDIBLY rare. Hell, most game developers can't be bothered doing the work to just have a modern day, relatively unfantastical, real world setting (other than vaguely war and sports) and so they massively stick out in video games - but in TV that's just standard.
