So I never really played Chaos, but as Beastmen it seems like I'll never ever get a second stack properly up and running. Not that I'm not having a jolly old time rolling around the Not-Mediterranean, but eventually I'm going to need a doublestack (not counting brayherds, who either slow down my blitzkrieg or keep me from getting the cash from a sack ), and I just don't see how I'm going to fund it. Upgrade your encampment always when you can, and take all the population growth skills you can. Growth is everything for horde. Raid towns to get cash first, then maybe come back next turn and raze them if you really want to deny the enemy. You need the raiding resources. You wanna expand a lot in order to raid everybody and also because you're loving chaos, but you don't want to just tear rear end across the map and pick more fights than you can handle. Sometimes you gotta kinda fart around in the same area for awhile just kinda bashing on some minor factions in order to build up the supplies to raise a proper army or two. Chaos is actually kinda a slow buildup, slower than you'd think. But if you play it right it just keeps building momentum up and up, like a rolling snowball.

I find Growth to be a bit tricky with Beastmen, if only because you don't get Tribes of Chaos right off the bat, though there is a better version deeper in their campaign tree, and lot of the really useful events tank your growth temporarily. Definitely slower than Chaos overall. OTOH I'm having way less money problems, since your units are cheap and you get that -15% upkeep skill right off the bat. Mind you, Beastmen don't get a bunch of stacking +loot/sack money researches and followers like Chaos does either, so their income is also lower. You get raiding boosts, but raiding sucks, so.

There was a workshop mod to set that attrition resistance to 30% at all difficulties since the AI is pretty about needlessly marching through attrition zones and needs a little bit of a cheat in that regard. Holy poo poo, I didn't realize it was that extreme. I thought that after Empire, CA was over the "kneecap mechanics that only apply to the player but we'll pretend otherwise teehee" approach. Does something like that apply to the Assault Army ability too? I feel like even when I've maxed out the skill, a "success" kills like, 10/1400 guys from the stack.

Merge and recruit new units instead of healing once you reach empire territory.

To my earlier post, I failed to mention that Kharzak got hosed up by Pavarron on the way to Helmgart, and had three units when he tried to beast-path past Karl Franz. So at least the consolation prize is that the AI doesn't play them very conservatively.

Nanomashoes posted:Beastmen start with two hordes jesus christ is there anything they don't do better than Chaos? They have a number of inbattle issues that Chaos doesn't have to deal with. Namely the fact they generally moralebreak most t1/most t2 units very quickly, but later game stuff won't break as easily. If things don't moralebreak, the Beastmen lack the stats to win a 1v1 fight. I just had a herd of Axemen get beaten by a group of Crossbowmen in melee for example, because the Crossbowmen were getting leadership buffed. There are also lots of small issues built around this if you aren't careful. Lots of t1 units will moralebreak quickly to the herd rushing ( swordsmen, spearmen, etc ), but they'll also almost always be able to then escape with more then half their unit. If they then have a large enough force/enough t2 units, you can easily get into a situation where your army is getting stuck in a bad fight, and suddenly the enemy army gets more then half of it's army back through those almost full t1 units getting their morale back/recovering. Beastmen have a lot of cool pros. They aren't straight better or worse then Chaos though.

The mini campaign seems a bit shorter than advertised. I played it for about four hours now, and it seems like I'm close to halfway through by now, with only two and a half major factions to go. Though I dunno quite how powerful those will turn out to be, so taking those down might well take a while longer yet. That said, I do like it quite a bit. The smaller scale is a nice change of pace, making each battle relatively more important and giving enemy armies more of a presence. Setting up a new horde is suddenly a huge deal, rather than something you just do as a matter of course right away. There's a nice inbuilt escalation mechanic, too, regularly opening up new fronts and never allowing you to get complacent.

So what I've been picking up is that Beastmen in combat are going to play a lot like Ambushy vampire counts insofar as they have cheap kind of crap cannon fodder line infantry and your monsters are the workhorses that win your fights.Your basic ungor/gors are your anvil and the Centaus/minotaurs/chaos spawn are your horned ragehammer that breaks the enemy line. Sound about right? Goddamn work keeping me from playing

Oh man have I made a mess of the Bretonnian lands. I ripped my way through the place razing everything and allowing the Mousillon vampires (who happened to have the ruins settler trait thingy) to colonise everything behind me. The Vamps are now the strongest race in the game, with Bretonnian down to their last two cities in the north. Since I also kept raiding the dwarfs for money a couple of tribes of Orcs have been free to pop up and are also running around wild killing whoever the gently caress they see. The whole place is a seething cesspool of chaos corruption, greenskin arseholes and bloodthirsty monsters (not to mention my murder cows); I loving love it. I'm hoping I can get the Vamps/Orc to follow me out into Empire lands and meet the Chaos invasion in the middle for a giant clusterfuck. As someone that's unknowing of Warhammer lore and tabletop game, three new faction seems really interesting after giving it a cursory look (I love horde gameplay). Hoping to get some good mileage out of them once I can get some money for that dlc. Speaking of which, as someone that really does not care about games having billions of DLC (paradox I'm looking at you), anyone a bit annoyed at what they are categorizing as a "Freeloadable content"? I find myself feeling a bit patronized when a company adds content for free of their own prerogative and then labels it as a concept for which the consumer should feel grateful toward them. It just reeks of marketing buzz wording.

Much like game title numbers, we should do away with patch numbers, and call everything by a name so that customers feel emotionally invested in the patching process.
