I've come back to this after a while away. To roughly gauge my absence, I have no loving clue how powerplay works.

I was flying a cobra with beams and cannons, but this seems substandard for bounty hunting now. I'm probably going to replace the cannons with something; do engineer mods apply to the actual weapon, or are they something that you can transfer?

Nothing wrong with the Cobra or with the weapons — it's just that the AI has been sharpened up to actually give you a bit of a challenge at higher ranks. You just need to choose your targets with a bit more care.

As for the engineers stuff, yes and yes kind of. In that order. :D
You apply upgrades to the weapons and through some very silly fiddling with selling and buying back, you can transfer the modded weapons to a new ship. The upgrades themselves are not transferrable though.

Multi-role? Definitely. There are certainly other multi-role ships, and certainly ships that does some particular thing better, but if you want to do everything in one ship, it's hard to beat. Exploration is probably its weak spot — with “only” 25:ish Ly range with a decent, unmodded, setup but a bit of engineer grinding will now happily put it in the 30+ range, which is where I personally feel a proper exploration ship needs to be.

For pure exploration, though, it's still the Asp Explorer (or Anaconda if you can stand the sluggishness and feel a need to bring extra everything).

I think that elite has a lot of issues with some ship "balance" considering if you look at traffic reports for certain areas and find that depending on the areas chosen activity there is basically 1 ship that is mostly flown and the second or third is just because people couldn't afford it and got the next best thing.

I guess there's nothing inherently wrong with a ship being absolutely-best-in-class but considering the only real "thing" in the game is flying different ships, you'd think they'd vary it a lot. Imagine if for exploring, the asp has exceptional range, fuel cap, but at the expense of something else like can't mount a bigger vehicle bay for Science Scarab Mk2 that is super useful for Detailed-er surface scans or whatever. So maybe you use a clipper which can mount that, but sacrifices some range and has an awful fuel tank. Give a diamondback something else that makes you meaningfully choose which ship is best for you instead of "this is the optimal exploration build forever."

It gives more use to engineers, too, because you'd be mitigating downsides or improving the highlights of your ship instead of just "well this ship is worse, but if I get a level 5 upgrade to this module its almost like a stock version of this better one" or just straight maximizing the already-best ship even more.

I know it'll never happen, but it's sort of lame that I look at something like the DBX and realize that now that I'm in the price range of better ships, there is literally no reason for me to use it besides "man it looks cool." This may not apply as much for combat ships, though, as I haven't done nearly as much of that since cheapo viper/cobra times.

I'm sorry my posts are giant goonsay walls. :(

It's a common subject, yeah. They seem to particularly screwy at times when it comes to "Multi role Vs Dedicated" too. One of my own pet peeves was that they Viper MK 4 is still saddled with the "Two small/Two Medium", when it's the largest dedicated combat ship around before the Vulture. Meanwhile "Multi Role leaning towards explorer" Diamondback gets a LARGE weapon mount, but has worse internal space than the Vulture MK 4

I'm also still super wish listing for a just x4 Medium mount "Not Quite Heavy Fighter". Like a Federal Courier, or an Imperial Vulture.

Can't justify charging 50 million+ credits for just 4 mediums though, even if it was a shiny Imperial ship. So if we ever see one I expect it to have some super hamstrung thing like "Worse than an armored FDL jump range", strained power plant despite only 4 mediums, and assorted "worse than a Viper MK 3/4 despite being more expensive" issues.

I like the Asp Explorer as a multirole a lot. It's too chumpy to bring into a real fight, for me at least, but it's fine for ratting in a regular RES. It can hold a mess of cargo for not being a dedicated trader, and it's way less expensive than anything that would be considered a "next step up" multirole from there, like a Clipper or Python. It also has insane jump range, even while fully laden, which makes it good for trading or effing around with Engineers.

Meh. The Anaconda is definitely the Python++ in terms of what roles you can fit it for — it's more of everything — but from a practical multi-role perspective, its needing a large landing pad really restricts where you can take the thing and what you can do with it. Lots of trading, misison-running, and many good bounty-hunting spots are tied to outposts. You can live without them, but it's just more work.

This is also definitely true. For something like a quarter the cost of the Python, the AspE is definitely “good enough” for most things — you just don't want to push it in any of the rules outside exploring, where that jump range makes it second to none.

I've been rocking the python for a while now as my current main/multirole ship. Outfitted for exploration, combat and trading. currently at ~30ly range, 190 cargo cap, 3 large MCs and 2 medium seeker missiles, a rated thrusters etc.

I could make it a bit more durable by dropping a 6E rack for a 6A shield gen and mod it, would give me a lot more survivability. I was originally going to be doing sothis/ceos runs in it but idk, guess I can always just swap it out for more cargo if I need it.

They are vastly simplified. Most of the high-end element requirements are gone; regular material costs are down; and the compositions are just generally far more sensible in terms of getting access to the bits you need.

There are still some silly bottlenecks (mainly mission-only materials like nanobreakers and modular terminals), but requiring fewer helps a little bit.

On NMS multiplayer, from an article dated May this year:

quote:

The game is a progressively expanding universe and the chances of meeting another player, another actual human player, in something like less than 1%. That is pretty intense! But DM21 Gaming came out with a video explaining just how multiplayer might happen.

In their words, say you are escorting your faction's starships and an enemy fleet warps in, then you go ahead and defend your ships, much like how you have done many many times before. But then, there is this tiny fraction of a chance that you will encounter another ship that simply does not move like an npc.

The enemy could be doing evasive maneuvers like you have never seen before—or do yourself. You try to fend off the unexpected attack but out of nowhere, the enemy spins to your rear side and blasts you to your latest death on No Man's Sky.

This is the only way a multiplayer type of game can happen, and it is, again, a very slim chance. What is the reason for this? Sean Murray founder and creator of No Man's Sky, had this to say, “If you want a first-person shooter-sci-fi-around-on-a-planet game play Destiny. It's a really good game. Go play that. We're not trying to do that.”

Murray added, “What we want is for the player to play with a sense of that other people have been there before. So what will reasonably happen is going to a planet and discovering that someone else has been there before you. You will see traces of them, like creatures they've named and things they left behind.”

NMS seems like sort of different strokes for different folks: explore the universe by yourself and do the same thing over and over, while Elite at least has a bit of a multiplayer element to push your faction's agend.... by doing the same thing over and over.

I'm going to buy NMS though that's more interest in experiencing it along with everyone else, but I think (hope) that in the long run Elite will become better.

I think the idea was that the players' various starting planets, which are random, will be so far-flung from each other that it's practically not feasible. Supposedly the procedural galaxy seed can generate like 18 quintillion planets. To put that in perspective, if you visit 1 new planet per second, it would take you 36 times the current estimated age of the physical universe to see them all.

When I roll a level 5, I want to feel like I've loving earned it.

Anyway, besides the FSD upgrades, are there any system upgrades that are useful for an exploration vessel? At a glance, it seems like some of the marginally useful upgrades for exploration would also chip away at my jump range. Anything I'm missing that I should check out before heading out to Jaques?
