Seems like Trump has finally stopped talking about the Gold Star family. He could have done this 2 days ago and the media would have totally let it go.

Now that he's no longer stoking those flames, they're immediately turning to other topics (Hillary's bounce, Russia). All Trump has to do to avoid controversy is to ignore it and no one will hold him accountable.

Eurogoon here, how the gently caress is Trump polling at ~40%? How is ~40% of your voting population ready to elect that clown?

Seriously, I stopped even trying to explain to old people how this is possible. At first I tried to do all the "everyone is fed up with the establishment" and "dog whistle racism" spiel, but after the last couple of weeks, I don't even know what the gently caress is going on anymore myself. All he is saying is that he is great and will be the best at everything, over and over again, that's literally his entire program. He is not even conning people, he just outright behaves like a small child, openly.

Does Jill Stein herself even have a goal at this point? It's hard to imagine anyone from the Green Party even giving a poo poo at all beyond going through the motions of trotting her out every 4 years to get 1% of the vote.

I think her one sided feud with Bernie and Warren after they came out for Hillary was a big mistake since it make it look (correctly?) that she cares more about her personal brand than actually accomplishing leftist goals. Saying Bernie should run third party with her was bananas after he's made it clear that wasn't his goal from the start of his primary campaign.

Some percentage of the American populace will always vote for who or whatever has an R next to its name. The Republicans could run a cat and it would pull 30-40% of the vote.

Also white Americans are, on average, just actually that racist, and the Republican Party is built on a bedrock of that racism. Trump is just dragging all the worst parts of America out into the open, and what we're basically seeing is the death throws of a demographic kicking and screaming that it isn't going to be the numerical majority in 20 years.

There's a certain % that always votes a certain way in the US, regardless of who is running (this is not unique to the Republicans). We don't know what the GOP floor is exactly, but it's probably somewhere between 30-40%.

Same reason white supremacist far right parties are on the rise in Europe, too. Even in the most liberal and advanced country you can think of, at least half of the population is eager to have a strongman stomp on their balls and tell them that it's okay to hate the foreigners down the street. Odds are the same thing is happening in your own backyard. Hopefully by now The Guardian has figured out that Brexit shouldn't be putting the US on watch, but rather pretty much every other country in Europe

We don't have a parliamentary system here, so the tents for the parties are bigger and the loyalties run deeper. It takes a lot to shake people from being a lifelong X or Y voter. A Trump won't do it for a lot of people no matter how bad he is, but 2 Trumps in a row might

Yeah with Romney and crew there was the benefit of the doubt that the people they were appealing too weren't racist just very concerned with economic policy and national security. However Trump has totally pulled back the curtain on that and you would have to be a hermit that only comes out of his cave once every four years to vote straight ticket R while covering his eyes and ears on the way to be able to claim you aren't voting Trump because of racism.

How is this so hard to understand for a Eurogoon? You JUST watched Brexit happen. The same demographic that torpedoed the UK's financial stability with 52% of the vote is the one that's drooling over Trump: old, racist white people who are angry and terrified of the nice young brown/black person with an unusual accent that was ahead of them in a grocery store line one time. They're the same people who are increasingly voting for the fascists across the Euro-zone right now. The only thing that differs is the language they all speak and what accent they use but in the same the vast majority of the voting block doing this stupid poo poo is the old, terrified white people.

Thankfully the US is a lot more diverse than the UK so Racist Grandpa and Grandma don't have nearly the voting power to ruin the nation as a hole. They can make their rural county/city or even their state horrible but the national elections are pretty safe from them, no matter how loudly they scream.

2 dominant parties encourage tactical voting. 40% includes a lot of people who just want a republican majority in government and control of the supreme court and are ok if donald trump is the way to get there. Or in other words, Paul Ryan.

Trump polls at ~40% because ~40% of the voting population hold his views, or the views he is pretending to have. Those views have been the real Republican platform for a long time; they were just kept in the shadows of talk radio.
