I think the Green Party can pull of a full 1% this term, and Johnson at best 3%. It may swing Utah but other than that they won't be spoilers.

Seems like Trump has finally stopped talking about the Gold Star family. He could have done this 2 days ago and the media would have totally let it go. Now that he's no longer stoking those flames, they're immediately turning to other topics (Hillary's bounce, Russia). All Trump has to do to avoid controversy is to ignore it and no one will hold him accountable.

Seriously, I stopped even trying to explain to old people how this is possible. At first I tried to do all the "everyone is fed up with the establishment" and "dog whistle racism" spiel, but after the last couple of weeks, I don't even know what the gently caress is going on anymore myself. All he is saying is that he is great and will be the best at everything, over and over again, that's literally his entire program. He is not even conning people, he just outright behaves like a small child, openly.

Some percentage of the American populace will always vote for who or whatever has an R next to its name. The Republicans could run a cat and it would pull 30-40% of the vote. Also white Americans are, on average, just actually that racist, and the Republican Party is built on a bedrock of that racism. We don't know what the GOP floor is exactly, but it's probably somewhere between 30-40%.

Yeah with Romney and crew there was the benefit of the doubt that the people they were appealing too weren't racist just very concerned with economic policy and national security. However Trump has totally pulled back the curtain on that and you would have to be a hermit that only comes out of his cave once every four years to vote straight ticket R while covering his eyes and ears on the way to be able to claim you aren't voting Trump because of racism.

Like keep in mind there's a natural filtering process in the Primary that makes candidates more extreme than the average party member (on both sides). Trump is definitely an outlier, but for a lot of people it is quite literally "Yeah they're not great but they're better than the other party".
