You guys need to meet more Trump supporters. I have a FB friend who's been posting all the conspiracy articles about how Mr. Khan was selling visas to people or was in bed with the Saudis and is tied in with Clinton Cash somehow. There is definitely a group of people who are not turned off at all by Trump attacking the Khan family.

GOP ain't gonna do poo poo if they haven't already.

Expect that rumor to get floated to lots of sources, then for Trump to ignore it entirely, then it will go away.

He'll not tweet for 20 minutes or something and say, "oh well it's clear he's coming to his senses, whew, no need to make a stand against this vile person whom I support to lead the free world"

So what if they do? He'll still be the nominee, right? Would they do this to pressure him to clean up his rhetoric, or to step down entirely?

What are mainstream Republicans trying to accomplish or salvage from this? Washing your hands of him seems the most sensible answer.

So the GOP spends almost a quarter of a century in a nonstop smear campaign to keep Hillary out of the White House, and then the entire plot gets derailed when an orange gremlin swipes the GOP nomination from under their noses and manages to turn the party on itself less than a week after the primaries end.

Beautiful.

If this is the route they take, they'll be completely writing off this presidential election and focusing on staying in control of Congress.

It's so nice of the Republicans to self-destruct two weeks after they could have prevented all this.

I'm kind of impressed with how sudden and immediate Trump's collapse has been. It's like one of those GOP primary campaigns where the candidate has a honeymoon period only to abruptly flame out and get replaced, only the flame-out happened two weeks after the RNC and no one is coming to replace him.

Republicans are in a tough spot. If things got bad enough they could come out and say they're not going to defend Trump anymore and instead they'll focus on congressional and states races. The thing is they kind of have to cling to the possibility of winning the presidency, because losing that almost certainly means losing the Supreme Court.

My feelings of schadenfreude are immense.

Nope, there is zero chance enough of the party rejects Trump to make any difference at all.

For one, he would go loving nuclear against them and take his people along with him. Mostly though they're just cowards. What has Trump done so far, directly and to their faces? What have they happily had their noses rubbed in? You think making GBS threads all over veterans means a single thing to the GOPe if doing the right thing may mean having to worry about being primaried?

They're cowards, the lot of them. They'll be behind Trump until the bitter end. They may not give him a hand with anything or stump for him, but they'll be with him.

They're stuck with him now. They had the chance earlier in the spring to stop him at the convention, but they never found a strategy and now they're screwed, to the hilarity of everyone watching them flail around as a party.

When was the last time you had Republican politicians openly saying they will vote for/campaign for their party's opponent in a presidential race? Certainly not in my lifetime.

Trump and the GOP have spent months if not years swinging wild haymakers at Hillary and then she casually pokes Trump in a single spot just below his collarbone and saunters away as blood erupts from his nose and mouth.

The "lockstep Republican party" image has all but disappeared over the last several years. The Tea Party is too irrational and uncompromising for the GOP to rally over most issues anymore.

Meanwhile the Dems got considerably more cohesive due to the loss of the Blue Dog coalition and Nancy Pelosi meaningfully crushing walnuts between her two front knuckles whenever a vote comes up.

Only problem is, they've always been lazy 3rd party voters at heart and unfortunately for them, we've already been through two terms of Bush 2 and are up against a loving cheeto that destroys himself on twitter over a dead soldier's family being mean to him.
