Since I don't think you ever got much of an answer for your questions, patriotism/nationalism serve a function, convincing a disperate groups of people that they share something so they'll be more inclined to work towards common goals and collective enterprises like society and government. It usually does this by referencing shared culture and values while establishing some kind of other to be distinguished from.

Whether it's good or bad depends on what values you hold and what actions you want your see your country take as an extension of them. Under the Bush years, patriotism was conservative and nationalistic, prioritizing devotion to the state and constantly pointing out 'others' who were a threat to our way of life. Conversely, the DNC defined patriotism as a full-on bear hug of egalitarianism, tolerance, and diversity. And people get excited by that, not because it gets them out accepting the lovely things the US has done, but because they know it's best moments are the product of those values and having that reconfirmed in the national conscious means were striving for them again.

I always hope that people would work together based on teh fact that working together generally means that all people get more of what they want. Patriotism towards a country that is involved in things that are really none kosher, often for good reason, always strikes me as terrifying. I mean the obvious Trump/Bush level is obviously far worse but drone strikes and support for crappier nations and so on all make me a bit uneasy. I understand wanting to celebrate egalitarianism (and rightly so) but did it have to be "we live in the greatest nation on earth"? Because by some metrics only certain areas are like that.

I mean I don't think I would ever wear a shirt made out of a union jack, and would be mildly worried if I saw someone walking around with one in the street.

Lyndon B. Johnson was the only living current or former Democratic president from December 1972 to January 1973. After that, there were no Democratic (ex) presidents until Carter was elected in 1977. Carter was it for the Dems until Clinton was elected in 1993.

From October 1964 to March 1969 Dwight Eisenhower was the only living Republican (ex) president. From Eisenhower's death in March 1969 until Nixon's election in January 1973 there were no living Republican (ex) presidents. Herbert Hoover was the only living Republican (ex) president from January 1933 until January 1953.

Peak Republicans was the early 2000s when you had Ford, Reagan and both Bushes alive and kicking or during the Clinton years with Nixon replacing the younger Bush.

Peak Democrats was the 1860s with Pierce, Buchanan and one of Van Buren or Johnson (but not both) or right now with Carter, Clinton and Obama. If Carter can hold on and Hillary wins in November, peak Democrat will be January 2017+

In an emailed statement late Wednesday afternoon, Riverside County GOP Chairman Scott Mann said: “I was made aware of derogatory Tweet this afternoon toward Secretary Clinton when the Press-Enterprise called me for comment. I was horrified and had the Tweet taken down immediately. While some may think it was political satire, it clearly has no place in American political dialogue.

"As Chairman of the Republican Party of Riverside County, I apologize to everyone and anyone who was offended by it. I have taken steps to ensure that the individual who posted the Tweet no longer has access and I can assure you the person responsible will be held accountable.”

quote:

Earlier he had said in an email: “That meme is nothing more than political satire. It simply expresses how Ms. Clinton seemingly has gotten away with every scandal and political flip-flop in her public life – from classified e-mail and Benghazi to her changing positions on health care, TPP, NAFTA, gay marriage, etc.”

So he was both horrified and simultaneously told people that they need to get a sense of humor?

Also, I didn't realize changing your position on something like gay marriage is a lynch-worthy offense.

There are a lot of people who would normally vote Republican, but simply can't bring themselves to vote for Trump, to the point that they pick Hillary when only given the head-to-head option. They switch over to Johnson when given the chance.

I really don't think any significant portion of these are Democrats or liberals or even Bernie-or-busters, so it's not cutting into the base vote of Hillary. They are should-be-gimme Trump votes going somewhere else, and that's all that's really important. And I don't think most of them will stick to their guns about a third party when it comes down to the actual voting, so that's even better news for Hillary.

Polico reports that Trump's Wife was an illegal immigrate.

quote:

While Trump and her husband, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, have said she came to the United States legally, her own statements suggest she first came to the country on a short-term visa that would not have authorized her to work as a model. Trump has also said she came to New York in 1996, but the nude photo shoot places her in the United States in 1995, as does a biography published in February by Slovenian journalists.
...
Even Melania’s use of the H-1B program would stand in contrast to her husband’s position today. Trump, who has made his opposition to illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, has also vowed to crack down on the use of H1-B visas as president. In March, he said he would “end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program, and institute an absolute requirement to hire American workers first for every visa and immigration program. No exceptions.
