My girlfriend and I live together and have been for one year. We dated for seven months before that.
I have a three year old shih tzu that I adopted as a puppy from a friend who owns the mother.
I am an insurance broker and work regular hours: 9am to 5:00pm. My girlfriend makes and sells "goth" clothes online from home.
While I'm at work, she'll put little outfits on the dog. She will always pose with the dog to upload selfies with him on Instagram. At first, it was just commercially-bought dog clothes, but lately she's been making "gothic" themed clothes for the dog.
I should mention that we are moderately into the goth scene in Los Angeles. When I say goth I mean dress all in black to go clubbing and listen to Depeche Mode and things like that, not goth like the group that sacked Rome or the German architectural style. I dress in a gothic fashion outside of my job.
The clothes are admittedly cute. The dog himself is cute to begin with. The commercial clothes are also attractive. The clothes my girlfriend makes for him are also attractive and interesting, and achieve many, many "likes" on social media.
I wouldn't have a problem with it except my girlfriend insists on making the dog wear clothes even when it looks to me that he is very uncomfortable. He'll roll around on the floor, clearly itchy and in a mood of discomfort. I'll take the clothes off him but as soon as I go to work, the outfits (and the selfies) resume.
I've talked to my girlfriend about the dog's discomfort and she says that the clothes are good for him. That they keep him warm (actually he's a really furry dog and aside from walks, he stays inside all day). My girlfriend also says that the dog will eventually get used to the clothes. She says that people feel better naked anyway and wear clothes because they are used to them. So she says there's no difference for the dog's situation.
I think it's ridiculous and that she is exploiting the dog's comfort and happiness and comfort in exchange for Instagram "likes."
She says that although the dog is technically my dog she has a say in how he is "raised" because she stays home with him and basically takes care of him when I'm not around.
I want to tell her that I pay basically all the rent aside from her token contribution because her income is spotty, but I think that's a low blow.
Am I angry over nothing with this dog situation? Will the dog actually be okay wearing outfits all day long?
Or am I right to think if he's scratching himself and rolling around that he's in a state of discomfort?
tl;dr:
Girlfriend insists on putting clothes on my dog and taking social media selfies with him. The dog always acts very uncomfortable when wearing the clothes. My girlfriend thinks I'm overreacting and that the clothes are actually helpful to the animal. Am I really overreacting? Or are dog-clothes actually helpful to the animal?

Though i can't judge her too badly, i've been guilty of putting the occasional pair of boxes on a dog, but i always took them off if they seemed stressed out.
